hi there

i recently bought civ 4 but am waiting for my dvd drive to arrive before i play it. As i was very impatient to play it i decided to download the demo from fileplanet.com.

I installed it and direct x, however when i got to play the tutorial or the demo the majority of the screen is black with just the units and a few bits of resources showing.

I checked in the graphics/sound sticky and saw that a lot of people had the same problem but the problem didnt seem to get answered or solved, does anyone know of a solution.

My comp specs, if it helps are

amd athlon 64bit 3.4ghz
2gb ram
up to 256mb graphics unichrome pro 3d plus 8 x agp on mobo.

thanks in advance for any replies.

Carl

I solved this problem by reinstalling the drivers for my mainboard.
For others the patch helped.

Good luck !

Basicly the problem is still there. However many have resolved it by various means, driver changes, memory upgrades etc etc all the various methods are on the board. Problem is many are goiung for this as the first true 3D game - including yours truely - and 2D values /assumptions are not valid. There is no doubt at all that it was released far too early - grrrrrr - but in fairness not all woes & troubles can be laid at Civ IV's door. I suspect this is one of those issues as it can be caused by User setup problems (as in my currently unresolved case), by the unresolved bugs that are very definitely there in Civ IV, or a mix of both.

So until one or other of Civ setup, or User setup stabalises, and verified in an absolute, unemotional, way, its nearly impossible to say what is causing it. Many have played, and still do, many other true 3D games, so clearly in their case its a Civ IV issue, but many are in 3D for the first time, therefore they can have the nightmare scenario of issues in both camps - which I strongly suspect is where I am right now, and until Civ IV stabalises I dont know which of the many moving targets to hit.

Such is the march of progress :)

Zy
