Did I install a bad patch?

My first time playing FFH and found learning Curve too high. I am confused by some features. I think I might have installed a bad patch.

1. Very few barbarian. No barbarian ever entered my border, though I did found some in exploration. I comforatblely expand to 5 cities. Isn't suppose to be a very hostile enviroment

2. No new maps? I still play big & small

3. Civipedia not helping much. I didn't know I can't build Brewery without a river. I thought I could build the black sail, or I won't reasearch Optics.

1. There should be lots of dangerous barbarians. it is possible you just installed the last patch, rather than the entire mod AND the last patch. Is there lots of new art, or does everything look pretty much like regular civ?

2. No new maps. But the old maps work, so don't worry. There is a mapscript, Creation, that was intended for Fall from Heaven but you'll have to install it seperate.

3. The civpedia frequently lacks detail, for instance Twincast requires the Hero promotion, but this isn't indicated in the 'pedia. Most of the information is in there, but not all.

The Black Wind is a Launun world unit, so only they can build it.
