Diety Game #2: Crowded House

Quick addenum: my workers finally cleared the last jungle tile south of Doomville--and uncovered a bonus grassland. Actually, that's visible in the lower right corner of my last screenshot--I hadn't noticed until after I posted.

I just declared war on Germany and moved two swords into his territory to attack Hamburg. I'm stretching my military pretty hard, but I need to make sure nobody else gets solidly established on my piece of the planet. Germany and Russia are getting kicked out immediately.

Also, my Hoplite up north has pillaged France's other iron tile. He's going to head east next and examine the rest of France. Last turn, he spotted more German territory north of Rheims.

The Zulus threatened war if I didn't hand over Mathematics and contact with somebody or other. I told them to stuff it. They stuffed it. Come back when ya got the stones to actually back up your words, Shaka.

Gloves are off, folks. I'm gonna play mean this game.

Uhh....I got a few things out of order. Let me back up a little.

Two turns before my Golden Age ended, I had two swordsmen positioned to attack Hamburg. The first one takes the city; it's auto-razed. My second swordsman attacks a German warrior to the north--and DIES!

That German warrior is down to 2 health. I attack him from the north with that fortified elite warrior--and HE dies! Worse yet, the German warrior spawns a leader.

When it's the German player's turn, he runs his leader for safety--and makes a very bad choice of path. Before:

Okay, now we're back to 650 BC.

Meanwhile, the front between me and France is at a stalemate. I've got a swordsman in the mountains next to Sparta, positioned to immediately kill any French troops who step onto the unprotected plains they must cross to reach me. The French archers get cold feet and decide not to advance at first. A couple of French swordsmen attack my two Hoplites that are camping on France's iron; my Hoplites win both fights. One French archer decides to attack Sparta, dies the minute he steps onto the plains--and three more archers follow him. One of them dies next turn.

The battle front:

Those two units just east of Corinth are my rampaging swordsman, and a Hoplite flying along for cover.

570 BC.

I figured a granary would be worthwhile in Doomville. I've finished that, and built my next settler. He and a swordsman are heading south to settle in that southwest jungle; once I clear the jungle out, a city there will have some growing room. I've finally got all three of my cities connected up, and my three workers are building a road past the dye and south to the jungle, where they will then start clearing.

France hasn't sent any more swordsmen at me, so it seems Joan only had the two sources of iron--both of which are toast for now. She's also stopped sending archers at me, and appears to be out of steam. I've mapped out most of her territory:

Side note: there appears to be no fresh water anywhere on this continent. Only thing I can think of at the moment is if there's a lake or river in Zulu territory. The tundra at the very north end of the known world doesn't look promising for water.

490 BC. France makes a more spirited offense. Including an archer dropped via boat right next to Doomville. Also including French swordsmen. Looks like France hooked his iron back up. I knew I shoulda fortified on that other source in the north after I pillaged it. The two most dangerous attacking archers (including the one near Doomville) are killed by Greek swordsmen. The third makes it to the forest near Sparta, but dies next turn in spite of its efforts.

450 BC: The fourth city gives me enough for my leader to form my first Army. Meanwhile, another roaming Hoplite heads to the French iron source up north. This time I'm gonna camp that tile permanently.

410 BC: My Hoplite up north got attacked and red-lined while trying to get to the iron. He retreats out of French territory to recover.

I get Code of Laws from Spain for Masonry, Mysticism, and contact with five other civs.
I get Polytheism from the Arabs for Writing, Horseback Riding, two contacts, and 70 gold.
I manage to get some other civs to trade their territory maps. When I receive Carthage's world map, I see IRRIGATION!! Hot damn! Water! Except it's on the other side of Zulu territory:

Russia overtakes France and claims first place on the scoreboard.

My Hoplite up north is attacked again, and killed. Just gonna have to send another one.

I come up with an idea for getting at that fresh water down south. It's a fairly complicated one. First step is to establish an embassy with the Zulus. Free peek at Zimbabwe. Nothing special. Next step, ROP with the Zulus. Keeping my border fortified so the Zulus can't actually use it, of course. :D Step three, get some workers into Zulu territory.

I get my next settler finished, and he heads southwest to fully consolidate my control of the area.

The settler will be heading for the jungle tile just north of that soon-to-die barbarian camp.

Hey it shows Leptis Magna is the Carthagians capital, so they must be in war with someone. :mischief:

I also cant belive the Germans actually got a leader.

Keep it up!!! :)

Basketcase-

what is going to be the plan for the army? have him march on Paris? or head down to Zulu territory maybe? :hammer:

Question: Couldn't you just settle the incense hill near Doomsville and sign RoP to cut down 1 jungle and irrigate the desert back through that city, then through Doomsville to the rest of your empire? Or is it war you're planning (cause that won't get the irrigation through)?

Edit: You would also have to settle the horses on the hill near doomsville.

@Toshi: Hopefully both. :) All will be revealed in time.

@Rhino: I use the Print Screen key straight from the keyboard. Then I open up Microsoft Paint, and do a paste. Civ3 doesn't cooperate with other games very well, though--switching to another app while Civ3 is still running can cause Windows to hiccup temporarily.

@Own: No worries about the German leader--I killed him already. :)

@Tribute: Yep, you have my plan pretty much nailed. I'll need to clear some jungle to get the irrigation over to The Hill, then I need to plant a city on The Hill in order to get the water over it to Doomville. One or two more cities will need to be planted on hills to get the water to the rest of my empire.

For several turns, it's just your basic grind. Build stuff, kill the occasional French unit, replace lost units.

Around 250 BC--and all at the same time--Rome, Spain, and Egypt all threaten war unless various concessions are made. I give the same answer to all three. Rome and Spain declare war; Egypt doesn't. Gee, suddenly, Cleopatra isn't playing nice any more. :)

150 BC: Rome destroys the Carthaginians. Turns out Carthage had only that one city, Leptis Magna.

Earlier, I was unconcerned that Rome had declared war. After all, they were on the other side of the map. Well, suddenly I've got Roman Legionaries visible across the isthmus in Zulu territory. Okay, this is a problem. That key hill needs to be reinforced.

I load my army with three elite swordsmen. It then smashes its way through a few French units, reaches the gates of Paris in 50 BC, and kills one spearman in the city before being reduced to 2 health and forced to retreat. It makes a run for Corinth and is immediately pursued by three French archers, one tile behind and bent on killing it. Gee, that army seems to be serving as excellent bait....

I play a hunch and sent my army west towards Corinth. Sure enough, the French archers pursue--allowing me to sneak four swordsmen in from the south to hit Paris again.

Game2_Image27_Tactical.JPG

At this point I could get my army into the city to patch it up, but I still need some more baiting. Army moves southwest instead.

10 AD: The French archers fail to take the bait. They head south instead, apparently for Sparta--which is undefended. However, it will be two turns before the French force can get there; my Hoplite from Delphi moves up to defend Sparta. My invading swordsmen continue north, knocking on the gates of Paris.

30 AD: Down south. The city of Leptis Magna used to be Carthaginian. Rome conquered it, eliminating Carthage from the game. Suddenly the Zulus control Leptis Magna. The diplomacy screen shows Rome and Zulu at peace--there seems to have been a culture flip.... :)

I attack Paris. I kill two defending spearmen, then lose a swordsman. That swordsman took 1 hit point off his opponent--and a full-health regular spearman steps up to defend. With only one attacker left this turn, and two defenders, I'm not taking the city this turn. Next turn it will be two full-health defenders against my three swords. Doesn't look very good.

The French archers retreat from my territory.

90 AD: I finish clearing the jungle around Delphi. Two bonus grass tiles were hidden under there.

130 AD: My army is back up to 14 out of 15 health. Good enough. The army departs Corinth and heads back towards Paris. Down south, a force of SEVEN Legionaries appears! And guess where they're heading.

150 AD: The Russians destroy the Vikings. 2 down, 14 left.

170 AD: Two more Roman Legions come in one tile behind the first seven.

190 AD: My army reaches Paris.

Game2_Image28_Paris.JPG

Same turn, the Zulus destroy Babylon. And right now it's looking like I could be the next one eliminated:

Game2_Image29b_South.JPG

At long last, I stand ready to conquer the French city of Paris. But it could all be for naught--for on the other side of my empire, an overwhelming force of Roman troops stands ready to destroy everything I have built.

The Greek Empire hangs in the balance! Will the war against France be won? Can the stalwart defenders of Doomville hold out against the Roman tide?? Can the Greeks survive the ordeals of history???
Find out next time! Same CFC forum, same CFC thread!!!

At least you have a hill for your chokepoint. Now your hoplites got 4 defence (rounded down) and they got 3 attack. You should send your army there.

If you had the fully healed army sitting on the chokepoint then Rome wouldn't even attempt a land assault and you'd be sitting around picking off galleys.
