I've never played a succession game before, but I have read through a fair number of them. I am just wanting to gauge interest in this type of SG to see if we could get one rolling. Beyond the difficulty level, all other settings are up for discussion (although I would like to play this on at least standard map size). To give you an idea of what skill level I am at, I play at the demigod level, and I just finished off an OCC conquest win on Emperor (it was surprisingly easy).

I'd be interested in playing in another Deity SG at some point, but I don't have enough time for another SG at the moment. :(

I was about to start one of my one, but now see I can just join yours. Am usually ok at deity.
Do you plan a variant or special VC? Haven't done space/diplo in a while, so would support that.
Just play first random map, with not popular civ?

I was thinking of rolling three starts and posting them (because we really have no chance if we start surrounded by tundra), but I like the idea of an unpopular civ choice. Spain would be my vote, given that it has a completely useless unique unit (an explorer with a small amount of attack and defense which costs almost as much as a cavalry and comes into the game at about the same time).

How is everybody with these settings (which are still up for debate if there is something people would like to change):

Civilization: Spanish
Difficulty Level: Deity
AI Aggression Level: Normal
Map Size: Large
Barbarians: Sedentary
World type: 70% continents, wet, temperate

Don't get me wrong, I also think we should have at least four players as the bare minimum, but I figured we might as well discuss it while we waited for more to join. That's a good idea though, I'd be up for taking the first start on a completely random world.

I don't mind playing a deity game

Alright then, I'll get this started. The roster currently is at:

Nightfire
nerovats
Optional
ThERat

Here's our world settings:

This is one of the best starts I have ever seen.

Make sure you pop that hut with the settler that we should shift there to settle...great start for a tough game :goodjob:

4000 BC: Considered moving settler NW, but moved northeast to have access to three bonus wheat, river and the ocean. Great minds think alike, eh Rat? :D Receive 25 gold from goody hut. Worker irrigates starting square.

3950 BC: Founded capital of Amsterdam. No matter what percentage of income is diverted to science, writing still takes 50 turns to research. Writing is started at minimum science. Amsterdam tasked to build warrior.

3900 BC: Nothing.

3850 BC: Nothing.

3800 BC: Irrigation complete, villager tasked to build road. We can very easily get five food and eight shields per turn, so with a granary we could turn this into an early four turn settler factory.

3750 BC: Nothing.

3700 BC: Warrior completes, Amsterdam tasked to build additional warrior. Warrior heads north to scout.

3650 BC: Road completes, worker tasked to irrigate wheat one tile southwest (once it gets there next turn). Luxury slider set to 10% as Amsterdam grows.

3600 BC: Warrior moves north, spots goody hut. Worker starts to irrigate wheat.

3550 BC: Warrior builds in Amsterdam, luxury slider reset to 0%. Warrior to the north pops goody hut but disturbs barbarians.

The situation in 3500 BC:

A third warrior is set to build in Amsterdam, but a granary even at this point might not be a bad idea, since our starting location is perfect for a settler factory. Good luck nerovats!

I would try and get a second settler out before going for the granary. We need a city to provide warriors for exploration and protection, this is deity. And I would get that warrior out of Amsterdam to head west.

Pre turn
Change to settler, move warrior west
3400BC
Spot GH and ivory
3350BC
barb is heading for Amsterdam, send warrior back
3150BC
Amsterdam settler->granary
worker is roading Ivory
IBT
barb attacks our warrior we survive
3100BC
Settle Rotterdam->warrior
3000BC
Ivory connected
Meet stack of Inca warriors, up to no good I persume
Can trade alpha for just 1 tech. Do we want to aim for GLib, the we shouldn't trade.
So stop here, next player can move units.

Got it. Sorry for being a bit slow; this SG kicked of a bit sooner than I expected.

I'm not a Diety player, so I find this a difficult call. What I'm seeing is that we've got Ivory. I assume we want to shoot for the Statue of Zeus? And building the Statue and the GLib both would be too much, I think.
Apart from that, would it be too optimistic to hope to get another contact before trading Alphabet?

The Netherlands being seafaring, I prefer looking for contacts with curraghs. Two fast curraghs that can't be beaten by barb galleys because of the sedentary barbs can go a long way. I might send the warrior in the west back home in a loop, that way he has done at least some exploration of the immediate surroundings, and having him back makes it a bit easier building a curragh in Rotterdam next.

Sending out curraghs sounds reasonable.

Trading alpha is a little more tricky, I would hold off for now until we get another contact. I doubt we can shoot for SoZ, we rather head for the Glib, though trading should make it able for us to get back from behind as well.
