Different advantages for civs?

From browsing around today (yes boss, I will do that work soon) I have picked up a few hints that which civ you pick to play makes a difference to your start. I thought they were all the same, and that the two settler start, or which tech you get, was just luck. Can someone explain the different advantages of the civs? Or is it by colour?

Apologies if this is obvious to everyone else. I am a bear of very little brain...

Well the civs dont't have different advantages exactly...It's just that some bahave in particular way.
But when you take control of a civ, this doesn't affect you.

For instance if a civ is Agressive, Militaristic, Expansionist then it will tend to brak treaties more often (Agressive), focus more on building military units (Militaristic), and it's leader will always search for an opportunity to take your cities (Expansionist)

See, this is the intelligence report (press check intelligence)

This leader is Agreessive

The adjectives are:

Rational, Neutral, Agressive
Perfectionist, Normal, Expansionist
Civillised, Militaristic, Normal

If you see Agressive Expansionist Militaristic
It means:

Well even for humans your advances are either speeded up or slowed down depending on whether you are either militaritic and Pacifist. If you are militaristic, all those military advances come a little faster(not too obviously faster) and the peaceful techs come slower. Vice Versa for Pacifist leaders.

The difference is the starting techs.

If you choose a civilized civ you will have a slightly better chance of getting "civilized" techs. And a militaristic civ will have a better chance of getting militaristic techs.

Are you sure about that allhailIndia? Because the cost of techs have just been explained and this is not mentioned anywhere.

So I don't automatically start with certain techs? I thought not.

Just to confirm - is the two settler start random as well?

I think the two settler thing is random...

At deity you allways start with two settlers, on the other levels I think its random

Diety always starts with 2 settlers but the techs range from 0 to 8 (maybe 9). When I get that many techs at once, it ususlly means the terrain isn't going to be easy to expand quickly (in my experience).

Good observation. If you have a lot of techs, it means something else is going to suck. Usually land.

If I join an in progress game, I would try to take Romans. They seem to be more on the path I like to take.

I never noticed the effect, I always figured advanced come at a certain rate, based on how many advances you already have.
