Different versions?

I wanted to play online with a friend of mine but every time we try to connect it kicks one of us off. I know that he has civ complete and I have conquests, could this be our problem? I am new to playing online so any help would be great.

You will need to make sure you have patched to 1.22 as Complete comes ready patched (I think) and earlier versions are not compatible. If you are both at 1.22 I can't help further as I play PBEM not online.
