Difficult to say this but...

I decided to personally ban myself from these discussions in the Off Topic forum.
That's actually pretty much all there is to say about this topic.

If you don't like a topic then just don't read it. If you're not able to avoid threads in a forum you have a serious problem that can't be cured by banning some topic in some forum.

I also don't like a couple of topics and especially how they are discussed (or rather not...) but the simple solution to that is not to get involved with it.

i don't see the huge difficulty in reporting a post to mods and then forgetting about it. I haven't been in the threads in question, but surely the rules are the same there.

and realgoober: you know it's annoying, yet you still bring it up again, despite vowing several times that you won't. and i will tell you to shut up each and every time i see you start up again :p

Exactly!

And remember, if you (not you, h4py) go ballistic, it's not me who's going to get banned ;)

Yes, there is.

Some people should really re-familiarise themselves with the rules now and then!

Coming from you I find that hilarious.

In order to avoid flaming and nerve broking in OT, I suggest a measure which I personally dislike:

No threads about US/EU relations.
I keep always a relative calm, I think, but this is a real nerve recking! Posters (not saying names for now... but it is all published in the thread) are simply to flamers towards Euros and then we start answering and the confusion goes up.
Also, I understand you are US and thus you probably don't like this so, before I and other Euros get problems I would advise this. Or it would be very unfair to see some saying the nonesense they normally use and have to leave them get away with that.

I left OT and History in November exactly because of this US-EU tensions and endless, fruitless discussions. I thought it was pretty bad back then - I had no idea.

When I read Portuguese's post (i.e. this thread) I looked for the first time since November what was going on in OT
-->posters calling each other stupid and the hate - unbelievable. In retrospect I don't regret having stopped posting there.

If something is happening, report it and ignore it. Simple.
Like DoM said, if you have a problem with a post, report it. As simple as that.

Seems to me that most reported posts are on US-bashing, that might be why the mods seem to lean towards dealing with these.

You might be surprised but I, at least, don't read the 'political' stuff here. :p If you want my attention, at least, to these Euro-bashing posts, report them.

I do not deal in wrong and right here. I deal eforce local rules and polciy. I am a spammer, a flamer, and troll at sites wher it is permitted, and a damned sight better at it than most of you young fellows.
As for the thread subject of banning some or all politics. It has been proposed before, a few times, and decided against by the All Beneficent Thunderfall.

Shouldn't that be "flame" last? ;)

Nope - I am the epitome of good manners.

Hasn't this thread served it's purpose yet?

Calling for a ban on EU/USA debates has no purpose, I think you'll agree, Lefty? :)

I publicly opine not on the subject. Thunderfall has read the thread and left it open. Unless some clear prolbem developes, I shall not close it.

How about a ban on EU / USA debaters??

If the debate offends thee - then look away!

(or tell a moderator)

Or track him down to a site with less stringent rules, and savage him. (But is usually impolitic to let it be known you are carrying your emnity from another site).:saiyan:
