Hi again people. I have been engrossed in a battle today, (my fourth so far) and for the first time I am actually winning! I did choose Chieftain, however, and only the French as my enemies (opposition). I need some advice, though.
I was doing extremely well on culture, and had over half of the world, also a bigger army than the French. My idea was to keep growing and win by culture or military tactics. Then suddenly the French city of Marseilles decided that my side was the better one and offered to swap allegiance. I accepted. Was this the right move? They changed sides, and the French declared war on me (understandably)! They attacked me and I beat them back fairly easily. Now I need to know what to do. Do I keep building soldiers to strengthen my defence, which will put me behind with culture, and also cost me money (as I am on the limit of armies allowed). Or will the French leave me alone now? Or do I offer peace? Or does anyone advise me to attack them?
One more thing. I have an alarming rate of corruption which is hitting my finances very hard. I have built Courthouses and other buildings mentioned in the manual, but to no great avail. Is there a better way to chop it down a little? Sorry about so many questions.
Kev.

Read forum threads, they will answer all your questions.

Download 1.21 if you haven't already.

It's fine to allow a city to flip to you and, as far as I know, it doesn't tick off the other civ. Not that it matters, the tend to be ticked off most of the time anyway (with me, at least.)

Which Government are you in ?

Im just a warmonger, but i say since they declared war on you.. it's time to teach them a lesson. Trust me you wont fall behind on culture if they are loosing cities :)

Thanks for the replies. The culture flip definitely did upset the French, though, as they declared war immmdeiately after the flip. I am using despotism at the moment. I did have the option to change in another game, and did so. The result was anarchy everywhere. I believe it was Republic. So this put me off changing a little.
Thanks again,
Kev.

You MUST MUST MUST switch out of despotism. Corruption is insane in that government mode. The anarchy following a REVOLUTION (key word) is always going to happen when you change governments, but it is temporary and soon you will reassert authority. Switch to a more modern form of government and these corruption worries will be assauged.

Thanks for the advice, Robot. I should have realised. And I am greatly relieved to find out the change in government will aid the corruption problem.
Thanks again,
Kev
