Diplomacy observations

I enjoy the diplomacy but am having a hard time going from one leader to another while in the diplomacy screen. When I am done with one leader checking options I always have to click farewell which dumps me out of the diplomacy completely and then click a leader name displayed to the right.
Perhaps it is just a matter of getting used to but I would like to stay in the diplomacy screen and choose another leader to talk to. Has anyone found a way to do this?

When I play continents and actually get multiple continents with everyone spread out the games are usually pretty peaceful.

Play on a pangea map or some other map that puts you all on one main landmass - each time I've done it including my current noble/standard/pangea map there's been a lot more war.

In my current game alexander attacked isabella so early that my best unit was the swordsman - which is by far the earliest I've seen any conflict in Civ IV. I actually used my swordsman to take her capital after alex weakened it since it was on my border and I thought it'd be better for me to have it.

Overall my current game has had a lot of wars. My previous pangea game was violent too.

I just had an interesting diplomatic encounter...playing Prince on Standard Continents with 14 civs. Rome is my western neighbor and recently attacked me, taking over a city. I was working on taking it back when both India and Persia (thankfully not a neighbor) attacked me also. So I'm bogged down and asking Casesar for peace, but he wants a city as tribute so I refuse. A couple of turns later I discover Guilds and switch a bunch of cities to produce Knights since I was lucky enough to get hold of some horses. That turn I speak with Caesar again since the Indians are kicking my butt in the south. I ask what he wants for peace and end up negotiating a sweet deal. Caesar gives me 3 techs (music, theater, something else), all of his gold (~200), 4 gold per turn, the city he took from me, he makes peace with my two allies who I brought into war against him, and he converts to my religion. Talk about a pretty nice deal....I didn't even have a unit in his territory; as far as I can figure, he was afraid I was going to build a stack of knights and the city he took was about to revolt back to me anyway. Anyway, I have to deal with India now...

Also has anyone noticed that when you are allied with someone in a war, in the diplomacy screen you can say "I want to discuss something else" and then say "I want you to attack..." and then select one of your enemy's cities? I haven't been able to tell if this has any effect on the way the AI plays, but I thought it was interesting.
