Hi guys. I am new to this forum, as well as this game, but that is perhaps where my problem lies. I can't seem to talk to opposing races. Nothing I do can make me request an audience with them. Any ideas?

Hi and welcome to CFC!

First you need to establish an embassy with the other civs - send a diplomat (or later a spy) to their capital city to establish an embassy (or get the wonders Marco Polo's Embassy and United Nations which will automatically give you embassies with all other civs). The go to the advisors menu and select foreign advisor and from the list select the civ you wish to talk to!

I think thats it (at work now so don't have game to hand) unless I've missed something - I don't think so....

You don't have to have an embassy to be able to talk to another civ. At first contact between land units of your civ and the opposing civ they will request an audience automatically. From that moment you will be able to request an audience by entering yhe foreign advisor screen (F3), and choose which civ you want to talk to. If you have established an embassy with a civ or if you have a working Marco Polo or UN you will also be able to check the intelligence of a civ. This will give you knowledge of how many cities they have, government, capital, what they're researching and all their techs. What you are told depends on what level you're playing.
So, unless you have UN or Marco Polo, you will be able to request the audience of any civ you've met with landunits in the foreign advisor screen.

OOps - tech me to reply from memory (I play both civ2 and civ3 so get confused easilly) !!!!

:suicide:

You may see their units and cities if you explore their coast with a ship, but you cannot talk to them until you make contact with a land unit. You also cannot talk to civs you have not met unless you have MarcoPolo or UN.
