But Warpstorm, what does this have to do with PTW? Maybe nothing, but this snippet from Microsoft's website leads me to believe it has a bit.

Q. Are there any immediate benefits to installing DirectX 9.0?

A. Improvements to DirectPlay let computers within a Windows Me or Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing network connect with each other, as well as with players elsewhere on the Internet. Users with modern UPnP network routers no longer need to configure them for DirectPlay, because DirectPlay will open and close the multiplayer gaming ports as needed.

Q. Are there any known issues with regard to DirectX 9.0?

A. Due to enhancements in the way DirectPlay functions, it is strongly recommended that all users who want to join or host multiplayer games upgrade to DirectX 9.0. A user with earlier versions of DirectX may have trouble joining or hosting games, or my see a significant performance reduction when playing with users who have 9.0 installed.

Hmmm, sounds familiar.

from the makers of diectX9.0
in brief.
'ths game will work if you are playing on a LAN line with 6 supercomputers connected to each other, all with v.9 installed. anything less than this will result in our program causing your PC to crash and melt the hardrive. no responsility on our half can be accepted.'

I think so, but I know it uses DirectPlay for it's network code.

I haven't been able to join PTW games either, i hope this'll work.

Sim_One, that sig is a bit, worrying. :hmm:

It's not a pre-release version. It is the first release version. Like all versions of DirectX though it can't be removed. I here that MS games coming out in January (Impossible Creatures) will install it automatically.

Hi warpstorm,

Did you install DirectX 9 and notice any general improvements? Any improvement in lag issues just by installing DirectX 9? I have to admit that I'm abit afraid to install a first release of DirectX due to the very nature of it's unwindowiness. :)

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Thanks for the info, Warpstorm! I guess I'll wait until they put it into Windows Update, though, so I don't have to get the hotfixes next week.

the web site says it is a beta testing download and you will have to redownload it in about a weeks time , so i am not downloading becouse i can not be botherd to download somthing twice and if i forget they say they will prosicuit.

Which website did you go to handyandy? The one I went to sure looked like a release version not a beta version. In fact, the word beta didn't appear anywhere.

sorry my information is about 2 weeks old they have now changed the web site and put up the new download.

I have version 1.14,no firewalls or virus scanners, DirectX 9, and all the right ports are opened. All the World can Play the World, except me:wallbash:

You know warpstorm, every since I installed DirectX 9, that screensaver you made crashes my computer ever time I use it. (Actually, it REBOOTS my computer). I installed DirectX 9 and a 3rd party beta version driver for my 3Dfx Voodoo 4500 at the same time. So it is probably more likely that the problem had to do with the beta driver. (Also I think your screensaver uses OpenGL drivers instead of DirectX?) But I just thought it would be more funny if I said that you recommended two things that were incompatible with each other. ;)

My screensaver uses OpenGL and was written in the days of DX5. Oh, well. :(

How do you look at the directX version? The only way I know of is searching thru the text files in system32\directx\ directory.

In Win98, in \windows\system there is an program called Dxdiag.exe that will give you all sorts of useless information about DirectX, I don't know where XP keeps it.
