Disappointed with the Patch

Since you can change what drive it looks to in the registry at

HKLM/SOFTWARE/Infogrames Interactive/Civilization III/CD_Path

as mentioned earlier in this thread (thanks!) and it never mentions safedisc, i dont think that safedisc is the problem.

thanks for your semi-constructive criticism, however.

let me put it in perspective

You buy a brand New 60,000 Lexus SC-430 with a black paint job, two days later, you get into a fender-bender and take it in to get fixed, when you get the car back, its painted neon pink, the car still works fine, its just hidiously ugly

thats exactly like the text numbers thing

well, its not that bad. More like just the driver side door is pink. its ugly, not AS ugly, but FAR more annoying.

I'd suggest you send your complaints about cd copy protection to the culprits, which isn't Firaxis. The people at fault are the wankers who make safedisc, Macrovision.
I have to disagree here. The people at fault are the wankers who decided to use Safedisc for Civ3. Nobody at Macrovision forced Firaxis to use Safedisc. It's one thing to make the CD difficult, if not impossible, to copy; it's something completely different to annoy your paying customers by forcing them to insert the CD in the same drive it was installed from, and then be picky about whether you're going to read the thing right or not.

I doubt Firaxis made the choice to use Safedisc either - I'd be surprised if that choice was made by anyone other than the publishers, Infrogrames.

Just about every game these days uses safedisc, because the publishers seem to like it, despite the fact that each safedisc version is cracked within days (or weeks at the most) of its release and hence does little to reduce piracy, it only serves to annoy people. :(

But when every game uses it, what choice do you have when buying games? Put up with safedisc or don't play games ...

Jeff Morris said if you have problems with the copy protection feature of the Civ3 CD, you can contact Infogrames tech support and ask for a non-safedisk version of the civ3 exe. :)

I just got off the phone with Sid and the boys at Firaxis and they said that they are developing a new patch to address the fact you alone cannot run your cd rom off your bottom drive. Sid apologized profusely about the fact that you now have to exert the major muscles in your arm to press open on your bottom tray, put the cd in the top, then press close. He was really a mess about this. I mean, the Firaxis team tried so hard to prevent you from putting down you big gulp soda to actually do something physical. Sid said he'd send you a chair with toilet built into it as an apology, but we know that won't cut it. If I were you, I'd put the game down until they resolve this issue. But that's just me. ;)
Keep your trolling elsewhere Jezner or I will declare open flame week on you.

And Tf, does that mean you wouldn't need the CD to play the game? If so I have a problem with SafeDisk (the 1.06f crack no longer works and I can't find my CD, does that count as a problem with SafeDisk at Infogrames?)! ;)
