Disband old units or not?

same

i usually discover/get bronze working and i get about 1-3 warriors (goody huts or i built one for captial early on.. if any.)depending on what else im building.
i start building massive amounts of swordsman and on so i ususally end up with a LOT of guerilla after all the upgrades.
from the way the computer has faught me so far i was pretty much able to go interecpt troops of theirs when they are in range of my city and not worry about the 1-2 spearman or chariot that is there.

I would rather have two warriors than one spearman. If you don't build warriors, what do you scout with, what do you use for cheap MPs, and what do you upgrade swordsmen from?

i send a archer to explore...

but the city radius and things walking on them reveals the next location i want to build in.

i guess i dont build warriors also because i get archers availble right away...

Generally I play as an expansionist civ so i get the free explorer. I also generally play ona world map so i know where things are, call me crazy, and i just might be lol, but i dont normally like the random maps; never have.
AS for cheap mps, i stifle growth a bit (and i play on regent usually) to keep unhapiness from getting rampant, then i just build up a lot of spearmen, and upgrade them as techs and $$ allow.
Sometimes, I'll get warriors from goodie huts, and send them out scouting. I avoid early warfare and concentrate on trading. Also i send out my settlers/workers undefended. If i loose it i loose it. I don tmind the gamble.

I personally have modifieded the rules, making all units upgradable. In Civ3C this is the default. In consequence, I nearly never disband any unit. I always upgrade them, even the conscript warrior from the village.

If upgrading is possible, I never disband, but when you cannot upgrade I pile them up together and massive disband to build stuff.

With Monarchy each unit (up to 3 units) will make one citizen happy. They presence of unit act as police and keep the some peace, build temples and other buildings to increase number of happy citizen.

actually, they make people content which is a slight but important difference. Luxaries make people happy...

To disband or not disband? I try and phase out units like warriors or those with a weak upgrade path and keep the spearmen because of their better upgrade path. I avoid a mass disbanding because of the weakened military power and a chance of being bullied by other civs. I will disband a few older units every turn to rush production of newer militarty units or needed improvements.

About disbanding units to "hurry" production: I found out it doesn't work with Wonders.

(along the same note, if you cut down a forest in the radius of a city building a wonder do you get the +10 shields?)

No you don't. And watch out, if you're prebuilding using a non-wonder city enhancement, be careful not to let any workers cut down forests in the vicinity of the city. If that happens, you'll be unable to switch to a wonder later.
