Discreet Oceans and Ocean Naming

Gulf has the equivalent Peninsula. Knowing that a peninsula is blocked/isolated by mountains at the end would be useful in the initial starting place calculations. A nation which only has access to an isolated peninsula of 5 or fewer plots is at a big disadvantage.

Good point. So subdividing continents into smaller areas may be useful. So maybe the entire CvArea class needs an overhaul. Or perhaps we can simply use other data generated by the geology simulator (when that is finally built). We will see.

It does need an overhaul as if the areas change mid-game it can cause crashes so land mass changes tend to be bugged. We've long wanted a solution to that issue anyhow. So if we do an overhaul it would be helpful on numerous levels.

Are you saying that how the game manages areas needs to be more or less flexible (fluid)?

I should have the ocean separation algorithm done soon. I found a nice approach yesterday and am already about a third done. (No more than a week and probably a lot sooner). I will post the results when it is finished.

The above algorithm did not work well. HOWEVER... one I came up with while I was analyzing why the above didn't work IS working. I have been able to successfully identify separate oceans, large seas, large gulfs, straits, and of course lakes.

I am still ironing out the algorithm to recognize small gulfs/seas and bays. These are difficult to isolate but I have a good start on it.

Hello everyone. I took a break over the holidays but I am back in business. I am going to continue this discussion in a new thread since it has expanded way beyond oceans... so the title is misleading.

Here is the new thread.
