Hi, I'm on a pangea, immortal, standard size, turn 121 with France. Just conquered China, who was next to me, and I'm friends with everyone else except Greece. I started conquering India, who was a friend, and everyone declared war on me. I might still be able to win it, but it's more difficult everyone DoWing you. Is there any strategy to start a war without uppsetting all the civs friends (in this case, also my friends).

I don't think so. Pretty much, if you have more than one city and any units you will be denounced and DOWed. However, I recommend never making declarations of friendship with anyone.

You get a real bad rap for eliminating a Civ. Take them down to one or two cities and leave the honors to someone else. If you want to avoid a dog pile be sure to check out which civ's have a DoF with the civ you are about to victimize.

DoF can work out okay but be careful who you accept as a friend. More than one DoF gets messy. The best civ's for DoF are Darius, Hiawatha, Washington, Ghandi, and Gengis Khan. Gengis is probably the very best.

3 things caused them to hate you:
you eliminated china (it sounds like at least)
you declared on your friend
you declared on their friend

if you can bribe them to start a war, you could get everyone else to hate them, and people don't mind so much when you declare on a civ they already hate.

No one hated me for eliminating China. My friends bribed me into war and as I was close to China I accepted.

Now I wanted to take down India, but as you say, everyone hates me and DoWed me.

How can I get India or another nation to start a war with me?

Funnily, in this same game, Alexander started a war on me unvoluntarily: he became ally of a city state and pledged to protected. This CS was ally of China and I was at war with them. So when alex became and ally, he declared war to me ?! Next turn he came with a peace offer giving me a lot of resources and gold per turn!

There's not much of a diplo hit for going to war early game but there is a big one for killing off another civ. Just leave a rump city or two as others have already said. That's why you were dogpiled--you became a large warmongering, untrustworthy menace.

Also you made way too many DoFs; they just tie your hands and will sour anyway in time (which can be convenient later). DoFs are best done rarely and with civs far away from you.

Best way to start a war is to settle near a civ and tell them to get lost when they protest (and be weaker at the time).

If you've been following my french pangea game, one of the things you would notice is that I only attacked the AI that no one liked (Alex in my case). Stay friendly with your friends til you don't need them anymore.

So the best bet in your game was to choose the Greeks as your next target, rather than a friend.

Once they are gone, then see which of your allies are also allied to the other AIs. divide and conquer from there. Usually once all non-clique members are gone, the clique will break down; or they'll all go for non-dom wins. Don't forget to denounce first, do some diplomatic demands to upset them, etc etc. before fighting. If you can get a defensive pact with 1-2 of them, definitely try to convince one of the others to attack you. That will split the group and you can mop up the last few in your own time.

Thanks MadDjinn.

To upset your friends, you make demands and settle nearby? Problem is that everything is quite full of cities and I can't really settle close to them. But I'll do it anyway if it's the only way.

I didn't go to war with Alex cause he is very far away.

Also, has anyone experience what it happened to me with alex before? A civ dowing you and instantly coming with a huge peace treaty?

Was Alex already at war with someone else? That might have been it. The code could have decided to 'hate' you and declare, but then calculated total forces against it and changed it's plan. dunno, but they still need some work there.

how to make them guarded/unhappy:

Place all your troops 1 tile from their borders then say you aren't there to kill them. (they don't believe you anyways - if they do, then you picked the wrong AI friend to kill)

Culture bomb them (not a great plan, but if you've got an extra one to waste, then why not)

Demand things. Ask them to go to war vs. other friends. Denounce them. etc.

If there's a crap island that you can settle near them, that'll help. Basically, stop choosing the 'sorry dude' option when they come to you.

edit: you could also sell your military and look 'weak'.. but ensure you've got the cash to rebuild it fast!

they did.
with made up numbers, picture it as a scale where you start out at 50, and below 25 people will dislike you enough to declare war.
by being declared friends you're maybe at 70, by declaring war on anyone you were dropped down to 65, by eliminating a civ you were dropped back to 50, by declaring war on a friend you were dropped down to 25 at which point a "friend" denounces you (your friends have found reason to denounce you) which drops you below 25 with everyone.

trying to annoy other civs enough to declare war on you is difficult... it's looking about it the wrong way as well, the penalty for declaring war alone isn't so great, you just shouldn't have declared friendship with everyone. that was the root mistake.

Well, to be honest I try to get my friends to be at war with one another before I join in.

In addition, you did a 4th thing to AIs with cities near your conquered lands:
You now have territory near them and so they now envy your lands.

don't forget that the diplo bit is still kinda bugged, so it's possible that you'll get the 'settling too many cities' catch all. Ie, you've got more than them. Even if only for a 'liberation' time frame. (stupid diplo system can't handle liberations)
