djb-4: "Mac v. PC Tech Rate Evaluation"

DnG, this could have been the deciding turn of the game. America's army is broken, and without iron, they'll never be more than a second-rate power. We now control three iron, and can take Germany's whenever we want this only leaves Persia and Babylon as credible threats, and we're bigger than both. Even more importantly, you built the SC. My only concern so far had been that we had neglected wonders, but I often feel that this is the best one in the first half of the game. When the war ends, we can focus on infrastructure and pop growth, with no worries about happiness even with the luxury slider set at zero.

The rhythm of your war with America sounds like the typical one versus a healthy civ: you strike first, then try to kill their offensive units, preferably on open ground, and then methodically mop them up once they're down to their city garrisons.

Should we decide on the best place to build the FP?

djb4FP.jpg

Berlin still looks like the best place to put a FP since it is on fresh water and currently outputs 3 spt. With a (rushed) courthouse and at size 8 it should be able to crank at least 6-7 spt.

We are currently at around 40% war weariness, and the luxury rate has to be raised again this turn to avoid massive rioting. Hooking up the marked dye resource with a colony should help in the short term. The worker can immediately be replaced by building one out of the corrupt former german possetions.

djb4tact2.jpg

Here is another tactical map of the American front. The marked cities are close enough to Paris to be productive after the war (and St Louis has silk). To hasten the end of the war, group the swordmen into large stacks to avoid failed city capture attempts. Since we are not a religious civ, try to stay in Republic until the end of the war as switching to and from Monarchy would not be worthwhile.

Zwingli, I think building a colony on the dyes just might be a prudent investment of one of our captured workers.

Berlin makes sense as a site for a FP, and building it there also indicates a future strategy. The American cities you have targeted for capture all look very worthwhile - but after they fall, should we make peace? Anything else we take will be largely corrupt, the Americans will have been marginalized, and we can reduce our ww without a disastrous regime change. Given the high likelihood that we'll have all the strategic resources within our borders, I would say that we are in a position to then focus on infrastructure, pop growth, and the space race.

Finally, what graphics program do you use?

Txurce,
I was thinking that the three targeted cities would be sufficient spoils to end the war. We may be able to extort Houston in the peace deal which is close enough to Paris, but with little growth potential (and on a hill, so not an attractive military target). As for my "graphics program", I use good old AppleWorks 6 which came bundled with my computer. I open screenshots as a Draw document, ungroup the image to do any editing, then save as a jpeg.

I'm still in my turns, but Miami has fallen to the French hegemony. Our swordsmen are heading south. There ia also a city just off the left of the map which will soon fall to four swordsmen. I'm trying to earn another GL to rush the FP in Berlin. I guess I'll go ahead and start FP construciton in case we don't get a GL. Also, I traded two luxury to Persia for one luxury which allowed us to drop our slider from 4-4-2 to 5-4-2. We were losing gpt and can now rush build a swordsmen or two.

Good luck in your pursuit of a third GL, Dojoboy, but I think we've had our share of good luck in that department. I'm in favor of peace with honor for the Americans as well, as soon as we secure our strategic goals.

Zwingli, Appleworks came bundled with mine as well. You first take a command-shift-3 screenshot, then edit with Draw. Afterward, what are the maximum size parameters in terms of posting an image here, versus uploading a file? (And thanks for your help.)

You probably know this already, but to open a screenshot (PICT) file in AppleWorks, you can select "Open" from the file menu, then change "File Format" to "All Available", and browse for the screenshot file. The image will automatically open in the Draw environment.

The maximum size for an attachment is 100 kb, and the maximum for uploading is 3 or 10 MB (don't recall which). To give you an idea how large an image that permits, the above jpeg with the marked FP location is 88 kb. If you use AppleWorks 6 to save as (filetype) JPEG, there will be an option to select a target size and quality, but I use the default settings (unchecked target size, medium quality). To reduce the file size of the JPEG it is best to crop or downsize the image.

To crop the image you can ungroup the picture (under the "Arrange" menu), double click on the image, select the desired portion using the rectangle selection tool (dotted rectangle in the painting tools), then copy and paste the selected portion, and delete the unwanted portions of the image.

One more thing. When uploading any file it is best to use a lower case extension (.jpg/.sav instead of .JPG/.SAV) because the system is not supposed to work with upper case extensions.

Sorry fellas, I'll complete my turns soon. I've been addressing some digestive issues which has this hypochondriac distressed. I'll try to play my last ten turns this evening. Hope this isn't too much information. ;)

1- 450 AD - England destroyed

4- 470 AD - Swordsmen capture Miami; traded incense & wines to Persia for furs, allowing our slider to adjust from 4-4-2 to 5-4-1. Persia & Babylon sign peace treaty.

19- 630 AD - Peace w/ America for Education, workers 2x, Buffalo, New Orleans, wm, and communication w/ CHina.
20- 640 AD - Rouen flipped to Russia

I switched some cities over to building granaries and marketplaces. The FP has 70+ turns to go in Berlin. I monstly built swordsmen and knights for the war v. America. I believe Russia will be looking for a fight soon.

Save file.

I see it. It will be a day or two before I can complete the turn because I have to keep the GOTM constantly active in the background to make any progress.

I finished my first ever deity game (domination victory; yeah!) and did not yet start the GOTM. Therefore I took the opportunity to look at the save file. And will take the liberty to give comments. ;)

This is IMHO an excellent example of a situation which can profit a lot from
  • some thinking on how to proceed, and
  • micromanaging your cities.
America is out of the game, Russia is weak, Persia is strong. My global goal would be to start trading and improving relations with Russia asap in order to pull them into the inevitable war with Persia as cannon fodder.

France's infrastructure is bad. 40% research, but nearly no libraries. Granaries/aqueducts were built or are under construction in cities without growth potential. You need markets! You also need to complete asap your strategic road network. I would temporarely build more improvements, less units.

    On a more detailed level:
    1. you can speed the FP from 36 to 29 turns by working the bonus grasland
    2. you employ a lot of useless clowns; put them to work/let them collect taxes!
    3. move your army out of New York (flip risk)
    4. use a slave worker to colonize the dyes (or hurry the temple in Leipzig)
    5. Marseille needs harbour, not market
    6. Chartres has 0 growth, but builds granary ??
    7. etc.
Dojoboy: maybe you take the time while Zwingli is GOTMing to look at the current status and make some adjustments.

PS: Why don't you give the GOTM a try? At least for the QSC, if you don't want to play it completely? We should have as much Mac players as possible to show that the GOTM staff effort on includung us is appreciated.

A successful war effort, Dojoboy. We should loosely discuss whether there's any need for more fighting. I tend to the school that we have an optimally-sized civ for the space race, and any more territory will only add to corruption. What does everyone else think?

Congratulations, Tao, on your first deity win - I found domination harder than the space race at that level, because the AI can launch around 1500 (once much earloier), and it's hard to gain military control before that.

And obviously I agree with Tao that as many of us as possible should be playing the GOTM, if we hope to continue benefiting from this gradual changeover to a virtual 1.29 game.

Well, its about time to take a break from the GOTM, so I decided to finish the turn. Here an abbreviated report:

640 AD (0)- Switch Tours, Chartes, Houston, and Maseilles to harbor to enable further growth. Switch most military builds to libraries or markets. Move enough units into San Francisco and New York to prevent a flip (we have about 2x the culture of America). I rush a courthouse in Berlin to speed the Forbidden Palace.

670 AD (3)- Rush Marketplace in Berlin to enable WLTK day for further waste reduction.

710 AD (7)- Berlin goes into WLTK day after raising lux to 20% cutting about 5 turns off of the FP.

780 AD (14)- Someone researches Gunpowder before we are done with it. Purchase GP from Babylon for 130g + WM. Trade GP to America for 21g + 1gpt + WM. Start research on Chemistry

840 AD (20)- Chemistry is due in 8 turns at a -42gpt deficit. The deficit should vanish when the FP completes in 3 turns and you can reduce lux to 10% (it is wastefully high to induce WLTK in Berlin). Sun Szu's art of War is due in 6 turns in Paris, or it can be switched to Leonardo's Workshop. Most of our offensive units are in San Francisco and New York to prevent a flip, and both cities only have 1 American Pop point left after a stavation program.

Note also that America and Babylon are at war, so they will be sending units through our territory.

Sounds good. Not sure which wonder we want- Sun Tzu will allow us to sell off our barracks in all our cities, saving us some GPT, and giving us barracks in cities that don't. OTOH, leo's will save us cash on upgrades, allowing us to spend it on techs. Hmm.

I'm going down to Florida for spring break starting tomorrow (Friday) so I won't be able to participate in the sg for the next week or so. Just feel free to skip me until I get back.

Something else to keep in mind is that we have not yet had a Golden Age, and we have a source of Saltpeter. Germany would be an especially soft target for a phony "trigger the GA" war with musketeers.

Extremely efficient turn, Zwingli. I will continue along this path, leaning toward LW. GA war could also be declared against the trespassing Americans - I guess, the question is, when do we want the GA? There's an argument for waiting until we're closer to the upcoming wonders, but there's plenty of infrastructure that will benefit from it right away.

I thought it would be fun to use up most of that GA Zwingli reminded us about.

860: The FP is built in Berlin.
900: Start researching astronomy.
910: Trade silks to Persia for 16gpt.
930: Babylon trespasses and declares war - GA! Ally with Russia for incense, which seals our borders. We never see another 'lonian.
940: Start researching physics. Berlin's prebuild switches to CO.
980: Trade Persia physics for banking, 85g, 3gpt. Start researching music theory. The goal is as many GWs as possible during the GA.
1020: Start researching economics. Orleans' prebuild switches to JSB'sC.
1040: China builds CO - don't ask me what they were prebuilding. We were four or five turns away.
1050: Berlin switches to a prebuild for ToG. Paris can be switched to Smith's next turn. Orleans has JSB's C.
