DMAW03: The Golden General

yeesh, that's some good defending there, patty :goodjob: I agree that joining him would be a good move, but to what? I don't think i can get behind joining him to an HA. Any chance we'll have an axe soon to stick him to soon?

Also, it looks like the ivory coast needs a spearman, or is there one there?

I think we should figure out what to do w/the general before we move on.

Why not join him to an HA? Mounted units make pretty good Medic III Warlords. The question is - can we spare a unit to use as a medic (and thus take little combat role), or do we need everyone available for active duty?

Thanks pholk. I kind of had the feeling in my round that we're treading water here. Between the barbs and the neighbours, we can't seem to get a break to expand or build-up much and we're hitting the point where enemy stacks are going to get bigger and more frequent now. The gap in power, tech and production is starting to widen more and more.

We've also missed our WC window. :(
They're still the best unit out there for killing axes and every barb apart from swords, but now that the neighbours have horse archers they're not as much use offensively.

If we attach our GG to a unit, we need to make sure he'll have the base strength to beat anything the AI is currently throwing at us, which means being able to take out a combat 2 HA or a combat 1 sword. If an axe will be capable of that, that's all well and good, but I figured the higher base strength and greater mobility of the HA might come in useful.

Either way, I think we need some sort of "General Beast" type character if we're to stand a chance of stemming the tide.

Well, re: the HA, it seems our thoughts march together, Zophos. How much use do we think we'll have, right now, of using Medic III, ie, how much will we be in enemy territory. I just think using it for Com III and Medic HA, RIGHT NOW, may be a sub-par move. However, i can't remember the last time i built an HA so, take my advice for what you've paid for it.

I reckon that we settle GG in Masihero. If we let it grow instead of whipping then in the long run we have a slightly better chance though riskier in the short term. If we keep whipping units in small cities we are bound to lose.

I'll take this since Cosmic may be AWOL ~ hope all is well ~

The clang and shouts of battle were heard all around the small home Toshi sat in. Here she was, the so-called Golden General . . . hiding in this hut? And for what? To take the cowards way out.

Takaka had insisted that she take care of things herself; she reminded Toshi, in graphic detail, of the horrors should would endure at the hands of her enemies were she taken alive. No, she said, this was the best way for you. She sat across from Toshi now, as she finished mixing the drink.

Toshi felt herself entranced by the swirling of the waters, and the odor of the incense. She remembered the enemies had started to come from all sides . . .

She sent her armies forth and they dealt with a small attack from the American near the Ivory Coast. . .

But little did she know, that this was a mere diversion, and her enemies were moving towards Ishiro's Hope in force!

They gathered their forces their, and wasted little time.

The soldiers then called it "the End of Hope."

Her lieutenants had warned her to stop their talk as it was bad for morale, but how could she, when she felt the same?

She had little time to weep, though, for her enemies gave her no rest:

She had wanted to stay there . . . to die in the spot where her grandfather did so many moons ago, but Takaka and her staff would have none of it. The warriors needed her to lead them, they told her, to inspire them. She knew she would only lead them to death. But she relented and let herself be lead away.

But she had no more tears left to cry when the town was taken.

When she arrived at the Coast, it seemed the American was now ready with his own attack force as well

and her enemies would race to see who could kill her first . . .

With their backs against the sea, the last remaining members of her adopted people awaited the onslaught from the enemies of Tokugawa:

And oh did it come. Even now it raged closer and closer till Toshi thought she would leap out of her skin from the sounds. Takaka, still, stayed maddeningly quiet. At one point, a sword clanged off the outside of the hut, sending dust down onto their heads and into the drink.

"Takaka, I am leaving! I will not die a coward!" Toshi leapt to her feet and grabbed her sword. Takaka made no move.

As Toshi reached the door, Takaka spoke: "Toshi," she said so quietly Toshi had to strain to hear her, "Your Grandfather would be proud." With that, Takaka drank the hemlock mixture. Toshi's eyes misted briefly, but cleared.

She burst through the door into the raging battle. Her troops were badly outnumbered with enemies on horse- and elephantback. She quickly dispatched several of the enemy, but was cut by an unseen blow from her left.

It caught her on the top of the thigh, and brought her to one knee. The next instant, she felt the cold steel plunge into her unprotected side, and glance off her ribcage.

Toshi fell to the ground, her strength pouring out of her. She didn't even see the face of the man that killed her; he had already moved on to kill or be killed.

The pain was intense, so intense, that when Death came for her, he welcomed him as a friend.

Damn is all i can say!

What a great ride all! I played more than 10, obviously, but when i lost Ishiro's Hope (again) and I saw the army arrayed against us, i knew it was just a matter of time. And so i played it out.

I hope you all had as much fun as I had and hopefully some of you will sign up for my next AW game starting in the New Year: "PH07: Resolutions!"

*sigh* It's a shame, but I can't say that I'm surprised. I felt as if I was treading water most of the time during my turnsets.

Good show, all...and excellent writing! :goodjob: I look forward to seeing you all again.

guys, good fight you put up :goodjob: But I can only tell you that AW is awfully tough and pretty frustrating at times in CIV. Monarch is almost unbeatable unless you rig the game in your favor with some settings...

yeah, i'm getting back to basics come the new year ~ a return to noble AW w/blake's new AI should be fun :yup:

Kind of sums it up for me too.

Tokugawa's bloodline's obviously cursed. Nothing to do with us I'm sure. :mischief:

Back to Noble definitely sounds like the way forward. :D

Apologies for my absence but during the last week there was a cable disruption in my building. Although it appeared that there should be a connection, there wasn’t and it took a considerable amount of time to correct it. Back online hopefully with no problems. There was recently some construction done in the building and caused the cable disruption.

Wow we lost again. I too am not surprised. I think Greyfox made a good point about the tech trading. I think if tech trading was turned off the AI would have a harder time taking us on. The problem with civ4 is there is no way to have a perimeter defense such as turrets. But then again that would make it too easy I guess. Fun playing and sorry I missed out on the latter part.

I think it's raging barbs, not AW, that kill you. The key mistake I see in this game was not going for archery before alphabet, and not spamming archers. Upgraded archers would've been needed anyway should you have conquered cities with WC's.

thanks all for your words of encouragement (and monday-morning quaterbacking ;) )

the key to the "Pholkhero Always War" Series IS the raging barbs and tech trading on ~ w/o those, you might as well play on a wheel map, too!

I'm going to be opening a warlords variation of the original RotQM after Xmas ~ Noble, Raging Barbs, Tech trading, Pangea, 8 angry men, one queen and BlakesAI ~

Sounds good. Then again, I'm 0-2 in SGs so far so maybe I should stay clear :D

Maybe continue with raging barbs and tech trading but go for a different map; maybe islands/archipelago where you have a chance of fogbusting and the AI have to work harder to invade. Could try that variant on prince.
