I cannot understantd why but I've switched back to Civ1. I fear that I'll never have enough courage to swipe it from my hard drive... Is it normal or have I eaten too many mad cow?

Are you still using dinosour WIn95 with DOS? All old dos games can't play under new win2k system. Therefore, either you have to give up civ1 one day, or you have to keep a copy of DOS or win9x to keep your mental happy. :0 j/k

Forget to say, indeed I was in psychology major. You may call me a half psychologiest. At least I know how to spell it out

It's even better than Civ for Dos...

Oh, sorry, forgot that there are Mac versions, altho I'm in computer major now
biggrin.gif

But I heard that the Mac version only have prince level. Is it true?

Anyway, glad to see civ1 players arround. When I looked at the thread about "just how do u get know civ" a lot of youngster just played 1 or 2 years. It was after CIV2.

Did u play a lot of civ2? I did not like it at the first view. The settlers are indeed ugly comparing to the cute one in civ1. But civ2 gave much more diferent units and the tech tree seems more balanced. In civ1, I rarely research horse or Chivalry. Don't went for Monarchy, neither. Head for wheel, then you get the most powerful unit in early game...

But all these are fixed in civ2. Almost every Tech is important. There is always a better unit arround the corner. Game playing is much more fun in term of strategy concern.

I think civ2 is truely an improvement. But maybe there are some special reasons that you don't want to give up civ1? The half psychologist is listenning.

Yeah, win9x sux
smile.gif

I didn't play Civ2 as much as Civ1 because I didn't have time anymore (studies)
frown.gif
. But now things are improving. I don't really enjoy Civ2 as much as Civ1, not because it wasn't as revolutionnary as its *GLORIOUS* predecessor but, because its gameplay and its tech tree had really changed... It's true I'm quite reluctant to any changes
smile.gif

Anyway, to answer your question, contrary to Genghis K, I prefer defence and that's why I never try to develop chivalry or horses. I go straight forward to Musketeer and riflemen. And for that, my 1st priority is Democraty, and so Republic first (because discoveries come very quickly with democraty as there's no corruption and all ressources are available!). I always win by sending appolo in space... Never by force. I'm not a pacifist and I can nuke if necessary
mad.gif
but generally I live in peace. I am really a stupid person, right doc?
smile.gif

So as I said, I always develop Republic and then anything for defense, including battleship (!) for defending my cities. They're much stronger than mech inf...
But anyway, this is a Civ2 discussion forum , not Civ1. I've also posted several topics on Civ1, you can have a glance at.

Forgot to tell you that the main reason for being unwilling to get rid of Civ1 is... Nostalgy! When I was younger, I hated stragy (turn based) game. I preferred action and platform. But when I lost my 1st PC, and my father bought a Mac, Civ was one of the rare games for Apple machines. Mac games aren't found in quantity but, for quality... YES!
So I tried. One day. Finally, it was one year. Now it's 10 years. It's horrible, Sid Meier has destroyed my life and my studies
smile.gif

Wish I'd never played that game (perhaps I'd have missed the 8th wonder of video games world?). But now it's too late, doc, isn't it?

Bottomline, i don't suggest you civ2, Coz it's a deadly addictive DRUG . But if you have to play something, I suggest civ 2 instead of civ1. At least it's a cure or civ1 addication.

Don't be afraid of changing. As I mentioned, it just make things better , at this case. The tech map go with the game helps a lot. The new wonders and new units are really nice. You will like it.

There is just too much to say if we want to go into the strategy difference between civ 1 and civ2. But I can tell you one thing: the horse that we don't like in civ1, you better get it earlier in civ2. Monarchy is also good in early game, espacially if u play deity level.

Use battleship for defense? Really a cute idea: we were using to attack coastal cities. But be careful to do so in civ2: they may have coastal fortress. Also bomber will get trouble in front of SAM missile battery, which made Howitzer the best attacking unit. The artillery we used in civ1 can't ignore city wall now

Oh, I even forget if we had spy in civ1? Anyway, spy is another powerful unit in civ2 too.

Anyway, i better stop here. The conclusion, I don't see you having any problem. At least much better than some politicians. And I hope it's not insulting to you

Sure there are spies in Civ1. I usually use them to "buy" ennemies cities. It spares me from having to risk lifes of MY soldiers and my conscience is kept clean
wink.gif
since I don't have to fight and though ennemy units belong to me.

Did I say I'd never played Civ2?
smile.gif
Of course I've finished it so many times. Sending spaceships again and again. I should change my name into Hamurabi

Sure, but diplomats are a terrible weapon, too! And you can also go on pillaging a city irrigation, and once its population is starving and its forces weakened...

So u played a lot civ2, but still like civ1? Hmm... Ok I don't see any problem. Just see how many antique stores out there. Just keep yr copy of game, and the system, you may get a good price for it one day. Who knows?
wink.gif

What a shame, i did not lauch many SS in civ2 yet. If I did launch at all?

BTW, are u interested for playing with human? There are some diplomatic games organized in apolyton.net. Those are really nice and fun. No much bloody war, and people will advanced to launch SS. Most ladder games here and there just ended with crusader and knights.
frown.gif
And it's really time consuming.

Lunch time. Later

Sure I won't mind a networking game, but... as you said it's time consuming and I'd better not try on my office PC
wink.gif

Perhaps in several months, once I have a good permanent adsl connection, I'll try the challenge, with gentlemen who don't finish up a game within 5 minutes (with knights and horses
wink.gif
). Yes, I'll hope to see you then, if you are patient
smile.gif

Oh, forgot something. I didn't know that Civ ladder could be as expeditive as Starcraft ladder?

a 56K modem with a good ISP works fine. If you have ADSL or Cable, then you can be host then
smile.gif

One thing is that you need an ICQ. It's handy to communicate with others. Or you have one already? Here is mine: 106971385

A little confused here. At least I guess u also play SC? That's a more popular on-line game. But not dare to touch it

Yes, but I'm just in UK for 5 months (internship) and contrary to the US, british ISP charge a lot
frown.gif
It'll the same when I'll get back in France so, better wait a bit and have adsl...
Anyway, I've noted your icq number, just in case
smile.gif
I don't have one since I only have internet access via my office. It would not be reasonable to chat while working, right?

Yes, but just local network, not on Battlenet (only heard of my friends experience). But that doesn't have its place here in THIS forum
smile.gif

Of course, doc Psy
smile.gif
thanks for this good advice. And mad cow isn't really good

...
Well, it's getting late here, 7pm, I'll have to get home. Nice week end.
