Do we need a save game warning?

Do we need the warning to save our game before exiting?

So, I've been playing Civ in pretty much every iteration since it first came out, and I'm fairly certain that in every version, it's told me upon exiting, that I'll be doing so without saving. Even now, in 2014, Civ Beyond Earth warns me upon exiting that by doing this, I will exit without saving.

While this is really only a minor annoyance (if that), I'm kinda curious what others think. Do we need to be warned at this point in the evolution of video games that we should save our progress before exiting? Or are we savvy enough that we can avoid it? Personally, I can't think of a single computer/console game out there that doesn't require you save the game first (yes, phone apps and MMOs save automatically, but I don't think single-players do? If I'm wrong, please correct me), so by now, one would think the warning wouldn't be necessary. Thoughts?

Set your auto save to save every turn and up to 100 turns saved like me. Problem solved.

I agree big time. I've been using this feature in Civ for as long as it has existed. I wish other games did the same thing (where possible).

The current setup is confusing. Where's the option for, "I just saved my game just now. Why are you warning me about exiting the game without saving when I clearly just saved it?"

I voted for 'pure and holy' but it's a bit over the top for my taste. I certainly don't need a reminder but just because I don't doesn't mean that others wouldn't. We're not all old-timers with computer games ;) . Just imagine the outrage we'd see on these boards if they didn't have this bog-standard exit warning in the game and somebody lost their progress.

While I personally could have as well voted that I don't need a warning, I believe that software developers should always start from the assumption that whoever is going to use their programs is a complete id... isn't the smartest guy on earth.

Beside you never know, even if you normally wouldn't make such a blatant error, "one more turn" after "one more turn" you might find yourself still playing at 6 AM, when your mind drowsy from the sleep deprivation might not function at its full potential.

So yeah better be safe than sorry, and in the end it's just a minor annoyance.

This bugs me too -- if I *just saved*, I don't need the computer warning me I'm exiting without saving. I know it's a little thing, but still...

Me too. Lots of other games compare the current state the last save and let you know if you're about to do something stupid. Civ just blares at you.

I rather enjoy the auto-save-by-default method anyway. Clicking Save is so 1999.

This. And it's ridiculous that in 2014 there isn't a save option as part of the exit procedure.

I voted for the "I'm a big boy" option because I feel annoyed when i have literally just saved.

I do think the warning should be in the game, it should just automatically disable if you saved this turn or something.

Not correct. In Civ3, if you try to quit, by pressing the Escape key or via the menu, it will ask you if you really wish to (with the options of "No, not really" and "Yes, immediately"), but it will not inform you that your game will not be saved when you exit. You're responsible for saving your old file!

Civ3 does auto-save every turn by default, however, although it only keeps 5 autosaves. But still, if you do forget to save, you aren't necessarily hosed. I find this preferable to Civ4's default of only auto-saving every 5 turns - I've occasionally been burned by that a bit (though usually as a result of crashes, not forgetting to save).

At least in Civ3, I think the confirmation is generally good, as the Escape key is not too difficult to hit accidentally and accidentally quitting Civ would be unfun (I voted for the "Why would you ever want to quit?" option). As I don't know if it's that easy to quit when you are Beyond Earth, I can't make as informed of an opinion of whether the confirmation should be there.

meh, with autosave if I accidentally do exit without saving (has happened) at worst I have to replay 5 turns.

Also, quicksave is a great feature, just two clicks. Maybe it would be cooler if there was a button "Quicksave + Exit programme" it would save a click. :)

It's good to have. It's only one click, so not a huge inconvenience but it could theoretically save someone's game they were about to destroy.

It would be nice, if you just save, to not have that pop up. But that's minor either way.

Who cares if it asks you if you want to exit without saving? If it didn't it would just ask if you really want to quit. " Please don't go. The drones need you. They look up to you." Of all the things in need of adjustment in this game, is changing "are you sure you want to quit without saving" to "are you sure you want to quit" really one of them? And in need of a 15 reply discussion?

Sometimes it's the little choices that turn an OK user experience into a great one.
