When creating the map, do you choose your opponents(or allies for all you liberal weenies :p ) or do you just put random enemies.

Me personoly ussualy give me another civ of my culture group and then set the rest to random.

i do the same thing as you fast pace if im japenese ill pick chinese or korean if im doing play the world and then i will do every thing else random but then i also choose every thing random if im using a random civ its much more interesting that way

All random

exception: if a certain AI civ caused me grief in a previous game I will select it in an attempt to get payback

yes....very juvenile

All Random... except i noticed something odd... i played something like three or four games in a row and I had the exact same civs give or take one. Americans, iroquous, mayans, incans. It got really annoying so I just manually randomize them now.

Do you have "culturally linked" on?

If you are playing different games with the same civ this sometimes the AI to pick the same opponents over and over

All random. Lately, I've been playing random civs, too. I find there are too many to make a good decision as to who I want to play. I figure if I ever get a win with a civilization that's completely unsuited to how the world turned out, I'll be able to say I know what I'm doing in this game.

All random, I run three starts. I discard any huge maps and tier 1 civs and choose from the remaining starts. (1-3 choices).

Ahhh. That makes sense. Still, rather annoying.

I set everything as random including my own Civ. I like surprises - not knowing which civ I'll be assigned as - or not knowing how much % of the world is land, age of the world, etc. from the start. You'll really have to be flexible in your strategy and adapt as you push back the darkness.

Plus, I find this to be more challenging than playing at one level higher but stacking the settings in your favor.

All random, EXCEPT when I'm 'jumping levels'.

When I take on a new level, I will try to give myself some Civ or map type. Once in the thick, its all random.

Breunor

I never play random maps, or quite rarely, just because I play the kind that I feel like. I used to play all random, but got bored off of playing archipelago - at 80% water, you can almost compete with the AI in techs, if it is spread thin enough. So I pick whatever landscape I feel like.

Oh and sometimes I surround myself with what chicks I can, namely Isabella and Theodora, to feel less lonely in this harsh world :ar15:

I agree. I find that being given a civ at random to play is a better challenge due to well... the randomness of it  ... In other words, I still consider myself a n00b even though I am playing games on Monarch difficulty now. Being given a random civ does make you think what strategies you are going to have to use to win the game - i.e. How to best-use the civ you have been given and stops you from stagnating from just using the same civ over and over.

When I first started playing, I used to pick either the Americans (now I hate that ultra-late F15 UU) or the Chinese. By picking a random civ to start with, it forces me to learn how to play that civ which I think is a much better way to learn.

So yes, I choose Random-Everything when creating a new game of Civ.

Just my 2 cents...
