do you defend your inland cities

it is my observation that AI normally distribute their defense all over their cities (of course main cities get more defense units.).
but for me i never do that. usually i only have units in the cities at the frontline cities (of course it depends on the map. sometime there can be a well-defined frontline and then this strategy works well; otherwise it doesn't work) or only place some ancient units in some cities to entertain the citizens there.
i'm wondering is everyone doing the same thing? is this the advantage of the human players?

No! I have never defended my inland cities.

I usually have token inland defense because too many times I have not noticed the Impi wandering across my land who just can't pass up the opportunity for a easy capture.

Once you have rail there should be no need to distribute the bulk of your forces.

I usually keep one defender in all my inland cities, shouldn't though. Also, depending on the government form, it may be wise to leave some to prevent disorder.

I usually keep one unit in each city, but in times of war, most of my units are on the front. If an AI civ can get their troops to the core of my empire before I notice, then they deserve to capture my undefended cities. Never happens though.

I never defend them, although I hate it when that BMI/GAT/LFB (Battlefield Medicine Indicator/Golden Age Triggerer/Leader Fishing Bait) Unit that was in my territory since 3000BC captures my capital because I left it undefended. That is why I send all my elite* units to my capital for ceremonial purposes. :)

Yes! The computer oponents know how well each city is defended.

I made the awful mistake of leaving a massive city in the middle of my empire undefended -- miles from any border!

PC oponent invaded (with rights of passage) and sacked the friggin city. Bah! :(

I never made that mistake again.

I always have atleast 1 defender (mainly since I'm usually in monarchy, and it's kept as a happiness garrison).

That why I almost never sign an ROP unless nesscary.

If you have a rail network, a human player could also find out how well each city is defended by moving a unit into you territory and out without any friction stopping it. Too boring to do every turn though. :)

I always defend my inland cities. You never know what the AI is plotting.

I usually leave one guard in each city, unless it a more important city, like the capital, the forbidden palace, secret police, or any important wonder or city in enemy terrority.

or city in enemy terrority.

That's kinda impossible... ;) I assume that your small chunk of territory is surrounded by enemy territory... Well, still doesn't make it an inland city. I think everybody guards that kind of cities well, I know I do.

As for my inland cities: no, only the border. Especially when I've built railroads

I always guard every city. Even with spearmen when i am in modern age. They can be upgraded to mech in emergency. Sometimes those enemy wondering fools aim for the unguarded city.

I also don't do the ungarded city as the AI tends to run inland to attack it. I find that an exploit and i generally don't use exploits.

I defend all of my cities, inland cities less so.

it seems a lot of people are having the same problem as i do --- computer (no matter how weak their military is) can always find the undefended city and take it. usually when this happens i reload the game. and this happens a lot to me because i don't animate anything once i enter the middle age to save time and so a lot of times i don't know what the computers are doing...

I never defend inner cities. Nor coastline cities. I even don't defend cities on my borders with AIs sometimes, when I think I can get away with it.

Surprizingly, I will defend all my cities during Peace Time and ROP, but will leave inner cities without defense during war time (No more ROP, of course).
