do you defend your inland cities

I do not build any military units at all. I build culture and win a domination victory by culture flipping:))

I usually only defend border cities directly. Pre-RR, I'll keep little stacks of offensive units in strategic locations to deal with any landing forces before they can do anything.

I naturally tend to stay away from ROP with civs on the same landmass as me.

I usually try to have 2 defense, 1 foot soldier(Swordsman, Longbow, etc) and one distance unit(Cavalry,Knight) I dunno why, I'm more of a peaceful builder...I guess I should try only having units on my border cities.

I always have atleast 1 defender (mainly since I'm usually in monarchy, and it's kept as a happiness garrison).

Question on this. I noticed that in Monarchy, three military units in a city are each marked with a happy face. What exactly does this mean? Is that how many soldiers it takes to make the city happy?

That's the military police effect - each of those units is making one unhappy citizen content.

It all depends on where I am in the game. In depot I keep units on inland cities for happiness effect.
In times of war I move most towards frontlines.
After railroads, I often group them by unit type in collection areas inland away from bomber attacks and then deploy them in select groups as required. This saves much time in searching out and moving dozens of single units and also seems to make things more difficult for the AI to anticipate.

And what do you do if the AI sends to you a great army and they broke the frontline or destroys one of your border cities?
...your empire will be fallen...
So I mae my cities strong: 1 defender 1 slow attacker (i.e swordsman) 1 fast attacker (i.e Mounted Warrior -iroquis- ) and a bombarding unit (i.e catapult)
The AI will never enter my cities... :D

Pfft defense. I put one maybe two defenders in every city. My offensive force takes care of the rest with pre-emptive strikes.

I usually leave 1 defensive unit in all my interior cities, unless I switch to Communism. If I'm Commy I'll sometimes have like 3-4 units in all cities for the police effect.

As i go to Democracy only when i have the upper hand (as other countries will mostly attack you only if you are behind them) .

So , until that time , every of my cities are defended .
I really do not like civil disorders in mt cities, making a stop to my production. And those defending units are very usefull to prevent such events especially when you are at war.

If the enemy can defeat my entire army at the front, they could certainly defeat the same number of units spread out in little garrisons all over my country.

What I do is not let this happen in the first place by killing the enemies before they reach my cities. If the force is too big, I'm dead anyway, unless I slow down the advance Russian-style, and build up forces. Usually if I can't defeat it, I don't have an *empire*. I would have umm... a not-so big country. :D (I can't think of a word that would describe it)

Not if the RNG is in a very wierd mood. :D

Anyone who leaves their inland cities undefended past the Ancient Age is a complete imbecile (yeah, that's right). At higher difficultly levels troops are essential to help keeping stability in cities by acting as police. This is crucial when you have a city far from the Capital, and without a cathedral, temple, etc - or even the technology to make them yet.

Now keeping minimal troops in 'safe' cities, of course it's wise. Especially when you're paying upkeep on the units. Keep your force on the front line where they are needed and use the extra cash for more offensive units, upgrades, or science!

yeah... i always find that when i play monarch (or below) i always forget to keep troops in cities just because the citizens will be happy without them and a lot of times i would be sneaked attacked by AI. but in higher difficulties since troops are essential to keep citizens happy such sneaky attack happens much less frequently.
