I've been playing Civ3 for more than a year, but I've barely looked at the editor. I know there's lots of help on this form to learn how to use it, but it's still on my list of 'someday I'll get around to it'. For me, my prioritiy is learning to play the 'vanilla' game better.

Do you use the editor to modify your games? If so, what sort of mods do you do, and why?

Or do you play games modified by others? If so, which mods do you play, and why?

Oh yes.:)

I have been fiddling with the naval warfare side for a long time now - it's the most grossly neglected aspect of the game "out of the box". One or two other minor tweaks in the editor.

I have used the dyp mod, which is reasonably enjoyable - it's a new set of development challenges to master, which adds some spice to the game, and smoothes out some of the more glaring "jumps" in military technology. By no means perfect, but since the alternative would be me doing lots of hard work, it's comfortably good enough!

And of course there's the visual side - I use modded terrain and resource icons, and I'm frantically replacing most of my unit animations with Kryten's new multi-figure units (see Creation & Customisation forum).

It's not to everyone's taste I know, but for me part of the joy of Civ is being able to adjust the game to suit my perception of "how things ought to be". When you get round to it, do have a go - you might enjoy it!

I try to mod things myself to make it more realistic. Generally I don't want to change the gameplay, I think firaxis tried very hard to make things balance, I probably won't be better than them.
I changed the name 'temple' to 'shrine', 'catheral' to 'temple'. You can see shrines and temples everywhere in the world, but not catherals. We may be religous, but not catherals.
'colossuem' also bothers me. How can that be everywhere? I tried to change it to 'stadium', after you research medicine, and increased the cost.
I also increased the cultrual value for Great wall. Have to say it's the worst great wonder of all. And in reality, wouldn't Great Wall have the biggest cultrual value? (along with pyramids, but pyramids is already too good) Everyone knows great wall today, who saw the Great library or Oracle?

I change stuff all the time, both graphics (which I've released) and rules (which I haven't (although if someone actually wants it, I'd release it)). For rules I mod for realism and balance. Firaxis is decent at balance, but I know what I like. I've increased the naval and air capabilities, made cruise missiles work right, and tweaked all sorts of unit values and even corrected some bugs in the default rules (Koreans can't capture cannons, etc.).

I use graphics mods, and also do some of my own modding. Recently, some of the stuff I've changed around has been making my game crash... ;) Mebbe I should just stick to "professional" mods...

That's your opinion, I beg to differ ;)

I must agree ;) although I only have downloaded and used Warpstorm's because the watercolor makes it look better.

I use graphic mods and I also like to use mods on these forums.

I play normal rules and modded ones.

(wow i said a lot)

So do I.
I've been using a slightly modded version of warpstorm's watercolor graphics for a long time and love 'em.
As far as other mods, I play one of two ways - about 70% of my games are unmodded, the rest with the "AU Killer AI". I find it to be a really good combination of mods that keep the flavor of the game Firaxis designed while curing some of the more common little annoyances and making the AI's a little more competitive. Not to mention I never had to open the editor - just downloaded one .BIC file. Truly the lazy man's mod.

I mod my games to make them more realistic. My common mods inculde cruise missle's range and Paratrooper's range. Also I mod nuclear subs so they can carry cruise missles.

I mod games for several reasons. Among them are:

to fix the difficulty level bigs in PBEM by setting the difficulty level in the editor.

to turn on the "Debug" option (PTW only) and tweak other things to study how the game works.

When it comes to civ modding I can probably be labeled as a "tinker".

By this I mean, that I don't make any big or far-reaching mods, historical scenarios, or anything like that. But I like to twist and tweak the game here and there. Constantly.

The game is basically fine. Afterall I bought it and like to play it. :) But naturally my opinion of "how to do it right" differs from those of who created the game. Or from those of other players, for that matter. So I keep changing this and that, back and forth, and sideways, too. Sometimes I just get ideas I want to test and see how they affect the game. Sometimes they even work. :)

At least it doesn't get you dirty as much as fooling around with your car engine. :)

I only use combination of various graphic mods (Snoopy's cities, Skanky's Civ2-style railroads and GenghisFarb's ruins). I don't modify standard gameplay rules nor plan to do that although I have done that once in the past.

I have modded my own game pretty heavily but also play the Double Your Pleasure mod and The Realism Epic.

Also use snoopy's terrains...........
