In [civ3] you can name units only if they produced a GL.
I just name them L to remind me that they have already produced a leader (I read that if a unit has already produced a leader it won't produce more).
I would not name more even if I could, and I would avoid to name even those, if the game had an authomatic way to recognize them

MidnightRambler must have a very peaceful playstyle, I would probably destroy my Notebook with all the tears shed for my killed units... :)

Only Galley, caravel, galleon and Transport very helpfull when you want to trans-ship units from a transport to another one.

THAT is a GREAT idea - I've always had problems figuring out which one just moved and which one still can move.

I rename units that spawn leaders, of course. They have earned it.

The only other time was early in the game when trying to keep track of who did what - like QSC.

As for naming every one, that must have been a joke - they're already named, right?

You could always do the borg convention - 7 of 9. But then you'd have to rename them as soon as you loose one....

WHen I'm playing Germany I will name my elites that create a GL, if they are tanks it will be "1st SS Panzer, 2nd SS Panzer.. etc" if it's MA I will name them "1st SS Tiger Tank,, etc" if a MI elite creates a leader they will be "1st SS Panzer Grenadier" and so on... other wise with other civs I just name them after the nearest city. "Berlin Heavy Cavalry, London Elite Bowman, Washington Elite Pikemen, etc" but they have to be an elite that creates a GL

Names for ships (transports especially) helps me alot with loading units and
naming units helps me keep up with who has moved and who has not. Plus
I really enjoy knowing which unit has done what. I like to name cities for
nearby resourses, luxs or location that resembles something special or a
place I have been or know of. ;) :D

I usually name many ships in the industrial era to know what fleet they belong too. Then I send these fleets to some areas where they either patrol, defend or attack.

Of course this depends on the map I get.

Otherwise I think I only name Legions when I play the Romans, giving names of the 20-odd legions that existed.

This is not true, I've had one elite unit producing 3 GL's

I name most of my ships, especially the transport types.
Also modern troops and airforce.

Things like
- 101st Abel company for paratroopers
- 202nd 1st marines
- 501st 2nd battalion for infantry
- 2nd armor division for an army loaded with Modern Armor
- HMS Majestic BB for battleships
- HMSS Wolf for subs, HMNS Ragnarok for nuclear subs
- HMC Nantucket (LOL) for carriers with specified naval airforce (RNAF N-02)
Well, you get my drift...

PS it really messes up your army if any unit get's killed!

Just to clarify, you of course mean after upgrades, right?

A hypothetical history would look something like this then:
ex: elite horse -> MGL -> elite* horse
elite* horse -> vet knight -> elite knight -> MGL -> elite* knight
elite* knight -> vet cav -> elite cav -> MGL -> elite* cav

A unit can produce a second MGL only AFTER it has been upgraded. Some could argue this makes it a new unit, but that's neither here nor there.

No, I mean the same and exact unit (absolutely, positively no changes)

BTW when you upgrade an elite unit, it keeps it's * designation and name (if changed)

The name stays, but an upgraded elite* becomes a normal veteran, and elite* units cannot produce leaders. Either you're mistaken, or you're playing a different game.

If no one can provide convincing documentation or a link to one, I will not desist from my point.

Well I firstly though that WS 78 is definitly not playing the same game as all of us, but then I read from where WS 78 came from :smoke:, and I understood. ;)

I usually name elite with something like "King's own light infantry" or such. I will often name units such the Brits do, Blackwatch, Seaforth Highlander, etc.

In theory I'd like naming my units. In practice however I play mouse-only most of the time (lying on my bed in the dark, don't ask), so I don't do it. And yes, I hate it when I have to dig out my keyboard to enter an amount of gold in the diplo screen or to select multiple leaders in the foreign advisor screen. ;)

Only ones that create leaders, slay tons of barbarians, or occasionally Elites that sack capitols. I would probably be more likely to name Knights or Cavalry. They are cool-looking. Who could resist naming a few of 'em?
