Do you still think of the AI as a friend?

I used to think of the AIs as friends that I would try and make Gracious and try for a Diplomatic victory sweep. Cultural was good too, as long as everyone was happy. Now, I still retain some of my builder's instinct, but I prefer some of the more violent victory types, and I could care less about the AI attitude.

I wonder how you (pl) percive this...

I see. The way the AI expresses itself are too limited. If they are ahead, they demand that you give them stuff & declare war TOO OFTEN. If they are behind, they declare war for no reason at all.

It would be nice to have an AI that you could actually *almost* CARE about.

Nope. Kill 'em all, says I. *cough*

All peace treatys are is waiting time before you stab them in the back. If you don't stab them in the back, they'll do so to you.

Your development sounds like mine. I used to feel a little guilty about manipulating the AIs so mercilessly. It's not nice to beat up people with feeble minds. By now, though, I no longer have any qualms. What Renata said...

i start off being all happy with everyone. but once i take over in military and or techs, i kill them all. most of my games i win through conquest or domination!

I always kill them, one by one, planning their demise. If not one by one, a World War Always happens.

I start every game in hopes of forming a productive relationships with other civs... They always prove me wrong... Last game I got a Great Library on the archipelago map. While discovering other civs, I noticed they were not very advanced (compared to France, Germany and me - Russia on the same island). Some of them were 5-10 techs behind!!! So, I started selling and giving techs away to keep some sort of balance in the world. Later on, Sumer, who was 10 techs behind and received 8 free techs from me, lands two enkidu warriors next to my city on a small island and walks in!!! Naturally, I dropped off 20 cossacs on their home island and wiped that enkidu infested land clean. Didn't take cities, razed them all... I really hope they introduce a concept of learning from other's mistakes to AIs in civ 4...

So, yeah, I find that thinkig of AIs in a way that almost makes them human brings something extra to the game. If I treated them as a simple computer obstacle, it probably would not be that much fun...

I found my attitude depends hardly how they look like when annoyed. Maya never can be friend from this POV, while Chancellor and Osman, developing those serious faces, are respected opponents. Another exception is Teodora, charming always.

Bah! I tend to treat my AI nicely. I only wipe one or two out if I need the land. Otherwise I trust them. However, with my real life personality type, once you betray me, it's nearly impossible to get it back. If the AI backstabs me, I will stop at nothing to salt its earth and eliminate it from the game.

It sure seems that way with certain AI. Brennus is generally a good neighbor, as is Joanie. I can ALWAYS count on Shaka to try to sneak-attack me. I don't like having Otto around either.

It depends on what victory type I'm going for. If it's domination/conquest, there's no point in trying to make permanent friends. But if it's a space race, culture or diplomatic victory, then I try to keep on people's good sides. But that won't stop me from crushing them like an ant if I want some more land or a specific resource, and if they declare war on me or demand that I give them something for nothing, they can expect nothing but complete and utter decimation.

In a recent game I played, I was Russia playing on an Earth map and decided I would go for a space race victory. I started in Australia and had claimed all of Indonesia and parts of Southeast Asia, and was just starting to colonize Japan when the Vikings, who were in China, tried to set up a colony of their own in Japan. Since I really wanted all of Japan to myself, I took over their two cities there and then made peace. That was my only war in the whole game, right up until I accidentally got a cultural victory before finishing my spaceship. I had signed MPPs and ROPs with everyone (except the Vikings who would never agree to an ROP with me) and kept active trade with most of them, and after that (early industrial era) they didn't even fight amongst themselves.

I was never able to trust them after this:

Its making really mad ... but I can't make ANY deals with gpt unless it is on a scenario or settling peace. Does anyone know what is wrong? :(

BTW, its the updated version of C3C

so how can I get the AI on my right side ??? they always start angry and tend to fight !!!
The stronger they are compared to you, the more likely they are to be annoyed. At higher difficulty levels the AI starts with many advantages, so that's why they start out annoyed. You have to give them stuff for free in order to make them happy.

Read this article on AI attitude to find out more.

The AI is my friend so long as it is useful to me. I once played a game where I was the French and the Germans started right next to me, and in any other game, we would have been constant rivals until one got destroyed. However, they never did declare war on me, but they proved a terrific shield against the superpowers on the other side. When we both declared war on Russia, we were in it to win it.

It was extraordinarily strange. I normally play on Maximum aggression, and a generally warlike neighboring civ never declared war on me. I rode them to victory.
