DocT01a - Middle Ages Modified: Reconquista!

I'd have set Leon on a pre-build, if there was anything to prebuild: Lisbon is still building the Palace, and will do so until we finish Mercantilism in 5 turns. The Hospital it's working on now is fine; either switch it to a Palace once Lisbon switches to the Hanseatic League, or let it finish the Hospital so it can grow to 7 and have even more spt.

As for Jerusalem- yeah, it's probably extremely heavily defended. On the other hand, we'll have 5 armies attacking it every turn for 12 Knight+ and 3 swords+ attacks a turn. I can't imagine it lasting 2 turns under that onslaught. And even if the early attacks go south against Abs' pikemen, we can still heal in enemy territory. And AIs won't attack armies in the open.

Right now, Jerusalem is the Abs' biggest city at 8. That means 800 vp, +25 each turn we can hold it, plus whatever we get for killing the multitude of defenders within. The only way I can see that working poorly for us is if the Abs stage a massive counterattack and get the points for killing off our armies. But even then, a counterattack in Jerusalem means that they aren't attacking our units fighting in Egypt...

Preturn: The Black Plague has arrived, and vultures are circling Madrid! I'm not exactly sure how the plague spreads, having heard all kinds of different and occasionaly conflicting information, but I'm fairly sure that it can spread through units moving between cities and can kill units in a city. I move the garrison swords outside of the city, and cross my fingers. Valencia swapped to from pike to Galley. Trade Divine Right to Germany for Religious Persecution 10 gold and WM. Santiago starts the Inquisition, due in 10. Build an embassy in Aix-la-Chapelle, which is size six and starving  Investigate Rome; the Relic is not there. Oh well, overkill anyways. Hit enter.

IBT: Germany declares on the Bulgars. Burgundian Knight takes one of the Danish cities in Sicily. Hun (barb) warrior pops out of the fog and kills 5 slaves. The Black Death (somehow) spreads to Vasteras.(size 1 city in North Africa)

Turn 1: Preliminary plan is to launch a two-pronged offensive against the Abassids, hitting them from Africa while we land our armies at Jerusalem Seige weapons keep rolling towards New Bagdad. Since the armies are still awhile away, I land the four Knights next to the Swedish city of Elbing. Another galley full of knights sets sail from the homeland. Join a worker into Cordoba. Shave a turn off Robin Hood by switching to +0 food.

IBT: Germany declares war on the 'Abassids (this a turn after signing an MA with them). Black Death strikes Valladolid...

Turn 2: Valladolid's garrision heads for the hills. Attack Elbing: Knight 1 loses 3 hp straight and retreats. Knight 2 loses 2 hp and kills vet spear. Knight 3 redlines and kills regular spear and promotes, sinks a longship still in port. Raze the city, knights return to galley.

IBT: Navarre gets the plague, and loses a pop point. Dane Zerk razes a burgundians city.

Turn 3: Set research to 100% to get merchantalism next turn. Troops keep on marching.

IBT: The Celts sneak attack us for no apparent reason, sending a lone horsemen who redlines and retreats against a spear in Pamplona

Turn 4: A fortified sword is awkaned and kills the Celt horse. Mechantalism comes in. Science set to 50% on Professional Armies. Leon switched to Hanseatic League, due in 23.

IBT: Swedish Beserk kills the spear outside of Navarre, and Sweden lands 3 Beserks and a spear outside the now-empty Navarre..might want to start peace talks. Black Death kills off another pop point in Navarre. The 'Abassids kick out our, um, sight-seeing fleet.

Turn 5: Make Peace with Sweden. MM Lisbon, Hanseatic in 18. Time to take a peak at Jerusalem. Looks like there is about 13 Pikes, a sword, a king, a cat, and an Assassin.

The time has come. The battle lines are drawn. The heathens must pay. To War! To War! For King and Country! :P

Troops move up to assualt New Bagdad. Armies land on the outskirts of Jerusalem. New Bagdad falls to our knights, we take one loss. Prepare for enemy counterattack!

IBT: Well, that was dissipointing. I guess their army is either gassed out or busy flinging itself against the other AI's. One assassin is it. Black Death spreads to Seville, Jaen, and Barcelona.

Turn 6: Our Assassin detects an Abassid one lurking near Mosul, have a knight dispatch it. Capture Mosul, losing 1 elite knight and killing 2 pikes and a Longbow. Send 5 Knights south to take an 'Abbassid city that has its name cut off by the edge of the map next turn. Armies assualt Jerusalem, killing 10 pikes but recieving moderate to heavy damage. Full strength sword army is fortified on defense. 4 Knight unloaded next to the 'Abbassid city on Cyprus.

IBT: Abassid catapults fire on one of our galleys keeping watch on Alexandria. Longbow attacks knight from mystery city#1, knight wins.

Turn 7: Knights raze 'Abbassid island city. Kill three pikes in Jerusalem, other armies heal. They've been reinforcing the city, of course. Raze the mystery city, which turns out to be New Medina.

IBT: Black Death kills a spear in Jaen.

Turn 8: Toledo blades lose 13 hp, but manage to kill the vet spear in Alexandria. Take Alexandria. The Abbassids seem to have a 2 pike+a rushed Longbow defense pattern. Not sure why they're rushing Longbows, but they are unfortified. Raze Acre (another mystery city cut off by the map edge. All armies heal this turn, preparing for what will hopefully be the final assault on Jerusalem.

IBT: Plague spreads to Cordoba and Asturias.

Turn 9: The final assault begins. Kill 4 pikes in Jerusalem, redlining one army but leaving only a sword defending. Send in El Cid, who kills the sword and then defeats the Caliph in single combat. Jerusalem falls. VP reaches 29190. Abassid capital jumps to Bagdad (better location for them anyway)

IBT: Robin Hood's completes in Madrid. Inquistion completes in Santiago.

Turn 10: Raze Mystery city #3, which turns out to be Allepo. Must have been size or so, because our VP jumped from 29600 or so to 30310......:king:

Victory!

Nicely done.

:thanx: to,
Doc Tsiolkovski for sponsoring this one and providing patient guidance to our crusade
Corrado for getting the realm settled and for military prowess in general.
DeceasedHorse for such a rousing finish.

Great job, everyone. It was great to be part of this team, and I'm thrilled that we did so well.

Muchas grachias, Caballeros!
T'was really a pleasure to play in this team. Especially nice was completely focusing on the Muslim Civs, thematically great.

*Disclaimer: In RL, I have absolutely nothing against any specific religion!*

What really surprised me was how short the lifespan of MDIs was...I didn't see any!
We did well, but of course the early demise of Byzantium may have helped us, so I'm not entirely convinced we've made that on Demigod as well.

I'm planning to start a Magyar variant in a couple of days, if someone of you is interested, your spot is reserved.

Oooh. Run the (eventual) Hungarians? Interesting situation- more space to directly expand, nastier enemies (Bulgars and Germans)- yeah, I'd definitely be up for that one. I assume our focus would be to bring Catholicism to those laboring in unfortunate Orthodoxy?

:) Completely different...we are the Magyars initially, a steppe tribe, not the civilized, christian Hungarians.
Those folks who were a bigger threat to Germany than the Vikings...and Otto earned his sidename 'The Great' by at least somewhat handling them. But around 1000AD, the Magyars were a 'civilized' european nation.

I'll have a test run before finalizing, but the setup is:

Our UU is a 3(2).1.2 "Mounted Warrior", collateral damage, available right from the start (that is, once Horses are connected).
Traits: MIL/COM

Sounds terrific?
Yeah...but now the ugly part: Our UU obsoletes with Horseman...and we start in Despotism, with no Market anywhere (but I consider a Town Hall in the 2nd Royal city).
No free tech, and I think no Knights also.

Comments?

Mounted Warriors on the steppes.

Looking forward to it.
