DocT01c - Middle Ages Modified - Arpad's Arrival

Got it.

Reviewing situation.

Will play today.

The Dog at the bottom of the pile

Do a little city management without much effect.

Upgrade troops in frontline cities. Target: Byzantines. Attica looks like a good place to start as it holds iron and trade goods, though the Byzantine victories against the Abassids have porvided access to lots of trade goods and iron. Short of taking Constantinople there is no way to cut those off. Best plan looks like roll through mountain passes to Madara, then Larissa, razing and replacing (too much flip risk otherwise.

Troops go into garrisons to heal up.

Danes execute volte face and start heading out west.

Cordovans assemble in Burgundy.

Byzantines, Franks, start Notre Dame

T1 1188
Hurry barracks in frontier towns to speed troop healing.
Assemble troops for Byzantine strike.

Byzantines start moving cataphracts into the territory at New Pliska and Belgorod. That is too close for comfort.

Strausburg flips to Burgundy. We lose a couple of Riders and a newly built pike.

Germans start Notre Dame

T2 1191
Conscript a couple of pikes into garrison at Belgorod.

Give the Byzantines a chance to move out before declaring and Arpad scurries to the relative safety of Debrecen.

Germany and Abassids sign a Peace Treaty

Theodora the Terrorist demands cash and maps. Refuse and she declares.

First cataphract attacks at New Pliska are failures.

T3 1194
The Danes have left but the Swedes remain so ask the Swedes to join the party against Theo but first have to build an embassy in Sigtuna. They decline the invitation. Poles won't either.

Rider takes on cataphract in open at Viliki Preslav and dies.

Elite Rider takes on cataphract wounded by cat bombardment, cripples phract but dies.
Monkey takes on crippled 'phract and dies. Elite rider loses 1hp killing longbow. ELite rider kill 'phract. Vet rider kills 'phract. Vet rider klls 'phract outside Veliki.

Money the 2nd takes on garrison pike at Veliki and wins, no damage. Money's army takes on next pike, lose three hp but succeeds. Vet rider attacks remaining longbow and the city is ours.

Denmark and England ally against Castille. Matilda calls demanding gold. In your tiara baby! She backs down.

T4 1197
Catapault bombs longbow above Heraclea and elite sword finishes him off, no casualties

Cut road leading to Adrianople hoping to slow any advancing Byzantines.

Move MI into position above Madara.

Spend the treasury on catapaults and pikes in border towns.

Swedes declare on the Turks.

Money the 2nd wrecks Bzantine advance of pike and 'phract at New Pliska

England allies with Byzantines against us.

England also declares on Abassids

Three Riders are lost to three Byzantine 'phracts at New Pliska

T5 1200
Armies break back of Byzantine counterattack at New Pliska.
Byzantine longbows and spys play havoc with invading force at Madara. Invasion force fails to take the city and is now spread all over the landscape.

Swedes finish Notre Dame.

Byzantine spys, 'phracts and longbows finish off our scattered invasion force at Madara.

T6 1203
Break up another Byzantine counter at New Pliska. Fortify troops in Srdets against spys and 'phracts coming from Madara. Rush walls in border cities.

Draft a couple pikes out of Belgorod to reinforce New Pliska and Veliki.

T7 1206
Maneuvering and reinforcing the frontier.

Vp check: Byzantines are running away from us by nearly 5000 points.

England declares on Swedes.

Turks come calling want maps, nope,

Wounded Byzantine 'phract takes Kutmichevitsa. Remaninder of Byzantine forces go concentrate around New Pliska.

Rus riots

Leader fishing with Elite rider fails at New Pliska but 'phract dies. Rider at New Pliska defeats 'phract, promotes -1hp. Money's army finishes off 'phract and goes back to garrison New Pliska

Byzantines have one healthy 'phract, a wounded spy, and a couple of healthy bowman approaching New Pliska.

T8 1209
Franks and Danes ally against Castille.

Byzantines sign Norway against us. Haven't seen a Norwegian ever.

Fatimids declare on Abassids. Go Caliphate!

Lose Elite rider leader fishing against wounded spy at New Pliska.

Franks declare war and spews fire at Frankfurt.
Frank sword kills pike at Hamburg, then Frank sword dies attacking spear at Blatorbagy
Elite rider kills French spear and capture two more slaves.

Money's army kills two Byzantine longbows at New Pliska. Elite rider finishes of long bow attacking force but does not promote.

MDI at Miskolc kills spear and captures catapault

Fatimid Ansar shows up and captures New Pliska.

Rus declare on Abbasids.

Poland and Rus declare on Castile

T10 1215
Retake New Pliska. Garrison Pest and Pecs with pikes. Thee two cities are threatened by five Frankish knights, mostly elite, and one of whom is relict carrier.

Byzantines won't talk.

The dogpile is started and it looks like Magyars and Abassids are the dogs. Can't get alliances with anybody as they claim we betrayed the Franks.

The Byzantine 'phracts are tough!!

There is way not enough force in the NE to hold off the FRench. Pecs or Pest or both will go soon. Defense in the west is strong enough to keep Franks at bay

I'm afraid I got cocky and the war with Byzantines started before we were really ready. THey are going to town on Us and Abasidds so their VP keep piling up and we can't get untracked in the east to take some Byazantine scalps.

Sorry to hand off such a mess. No meaningful miltary victories and no technological progress.

We need some good ol' DocT magic medicine mojo!

Update:
I've played 10, but without making any real progress.
I'll take the liberty and play a couple more turns, everything is so incredibly slow, I just need some more turns to get anything like a mid-term strategy working. I just reverted to 'Everlasting Rome' concepts...

And DH, it's not like you miss interesting or fun turns...no trades, outresearched and poor.

Btw, the only good thing is Byzantium is as slowed down as we are - 15800 : 20500 now.

Edit: Oh, and regarding the forum upgrade: Deceased Horse, you're up after me in 2 SGs, would you mind to send me an email-adress (either pm me before tomorrow evening, or to Doc_DyPATweb.de; replace the AT with @, no spaces)?

Is it too late to sign peace with most enemies and launch an invasion of Poland?? This might give us a boost of total VP that we need. We can reopen the Byzantine problem after we catch up in VP. The Poles were really backward, and are close to our core with large cities. Its a thought anyway.
On a related note Doc, I just played your other modified games. The Castillains are a cake walk to play, and the Celts aren't bad if you get to Europe before Polearms show up. I think both are doable at a Demi-God level with some knowledgable players. Good work on the Mods.

Magyars 1215AD

Ack, this is not like it should be….
Goal #1: Peace with Byzantines. No denying the fact we underestimated them by far; they can easily take on the Abbassids and us the same time. No question, we will fight them again, but we need Inquisitors and Longbows for that.
Goal #2: Fight back France, get the Relic if possible.
Goal #3: We’re paying 27gpt unit support, and don’t have anything worth to be called ‘Income’.
Our peace treaty with Germany will last for 8 turns.
IBT:
As expected, we loose Pest to the Franks. Like 10 Longbows and Cataphracts move next to New Pliska and capture our 2 Cats. Byzantines sign Danes against Turks.

Turn 1: 1218 AD
Recapture one of the Cats, and sign peace with Theo – for 42gp and 17gpt. No way around that, we would have lost New Pliska and Veliki Preslav including both Armies on the interturn.
Kill a small Frankish Swords/Spears SoD.
Hawk around WM for small change. Iron to the Turks for 52gpt, and they need Iron to defend against Theo.

Turn 2: 1221 AD
Kill an intruding Frankish Knight. Position to retake Pest.

Turn 3: 1224 AD
Kill another Knight. Without fast units, marching into position takes ages…
IBT:
Frankish Knight kills Pike at Balatonboglar, redlines. Another Knight kills a MDI in the West.
Some Danes move exactly to where I wanted to start attacking Salzburg

Turn 4: 1227 AD
Retake Pest. And our possibly only chance to win this:

CoT.jpg

And I see the 1st Norwegian unit – luckily only an Archer.
IBT:
Poles throw us out, nice, would have lost a ¼ MDI to a Crusader otherwise.
Cordova destroys Castile.

Turn 5: 1230 AD
One of our last Riders seizes the Relic, and runs to our core. Kill Norwegian Archer. SoD positions to attack Salzburg.
Germans have 2 cities in Mesopotamia  .
At least, Byzantium didn’t gain much during the last turns; I prey the raze Jerusalem, and take Bagdad last!
IBT:
Smaller Norwegian SoD (2 Zerks, Archer, Spear) show up near New Pliska….but what’s much worse: England signs the Danes against us  !

Turn 6: 1233 AD
Phew, at least I can make straight peace with Norway (throw in 5gp to get their WM).
Kill all Danish troops in our territory, only 1 Berserk and a couple of Spears/Archers.
Capture Salzburg for the loss of one Sword.   One the other side of it are 4 Danish Berserks, plus some trash!
MM some core cities for Markets (due in 2 turns). Rush Temple in New Pliska.
IBT:
3/5 Elite MDI in Salzburg (only defender, was a lost case) manages to defeat a Berserk, and takes off another HP from the next one. Loose Salzburg. Berserk kills Pike next to it, Berserk looses to Pike. Frankish Knight shows up as well.

Turn 7: 1236 AD
Kill all Danes at Salzburg except a ¼ Spear.
Sign peace with England for 67gp and 3gpt. Now only the Danes, Fatimids and Franks are left.
IBT:
Middle Class -> Invention

Turn 8: 1239 AD
Recapture Salzburg, kill intruding Spears. 5 Elite victories, and no leader.
Still nothing but minimal research, we need to steel Arab Learning I guess…
Renegotiate peace with Germany: Peace and Iron for peace and Theology. Ok, I originally planned to take out Germany, but now they’ll live some more time…sign a RoP with Poland (for free), we need to hurt the French.
IBT:
Franks want straight peace, decline.

Turn 9: 1242 AD
Kill some stuff.
IBT:
Ack, Frankish Inquisitors arrive.

Turn 10: 1245 AD
Kill more assorted trash, without making any real progress.

Notes:
Nothing special. We have an ongoing peace treaty with Germany, but our Rep is completely trashed anyway. We can make deals with Turks, but that’s it.
The French Knights were no problem, but the Inquisitors hurt. I just started a road to reach Naumburg and Würzburg, maybe we can get that, and make peace for Techs.
No idea how we can win this, we’re so backwards, we may be forced to attack the Poles…but they have gazillions of Swords.
And forget to eliminate the Germans, they have Mercs. Franks most likely as well; if they have, I won’t waste units against them.

Don’t want to sound to pessimistic, but this looks like a lost case…
IMHO we made 3 big mistakes:
1) We shouldn’t have attacked cities with Riders after we couldn’t build more; we’d desperately need them now against Longbows and Inquisitors.
2) Our Rep. Did happen, we have to live with it, but looks like the scenario cannot be won with a trashed reputation. Nobody except Turks takes any hard goods from us, and we don’t have cash. We can not even trade our Horses.
3) Neglecting culture for too long. Those flips really did hurt us (don’t mean Salzburg and Strassburg, of course). And Libraries are what we really miss now. We should have tried to steal Arab Learning about 40 turns ago.
Our unit support kills us, but everything we can build is so ineffective now, we simply need that many.
However, we have a slight chance to get our Relic to Jerusalem. I’m inclined to drop the ‘landlocked’ rule, what does the team think about that?

VP:
Byz 20550, Magyars 15895.

Ouch!

And such a promising start, too.

I say do whatever we need to at this point.

Lets do what we need. Lets build a navy and go to Jerusalem. Let us loot the Holy City, I mean return the relic, or just Win. Lets get Seamanship by hook or by crook and start a Navy.

Slept over it.
At this point, I feel it’s not a good idea to hand it over now. I decide to shift our goals towards a better economy, mostly by founding several wealth producers – we are AGR, that means, a single irrigated Grassland tile can feed 3 citizens; a size 3 town can produce 4gpt by Specialists, 1 gpt by Wealth, and supports 2 units - a total of 7gpt. And I’ll make peace with France as soon as I see they have Mercs, and prepare for a crusade.

IBT:
The Norwegian raze Antalya (that size 12 city directly east) – and I have a Settler available!
Franks and Abbassids sign peace. Denmark and Byz against England. Lots of Danes, including 2 Berserks, arrive at Salzburg.

Turn 11: 1248 AD
Kill Danes. Peace and our whole economy is close for Rel Prosecution to Franks. Vidin would be a great place for the Inquisition; it’ll finish its Blacksmith this turn.
IBT:
Danes come with Horses. See the 1st Frankish Merc.

Turn 12: 1251 AD
Franks: Peace and Religious Prosecution for peace, WM, 250gp and 67gpt.
Kill lots of Danish trash without casualties; all Vets promote to Elite, but no Elites produce a Leader  .Reveal a stack of Berserks approaching.
Danes: Peace, 108gp and Invention for peace and Rel Prosecution.
Rus: IO, WM and 4gp for RP
Norway: Improved Siegecraft, WM and 1 gp for Theology and Middle Classes.
We could get straight peace with the Fatimids, but I think they cause us War Happiness, and they don’t have anything to offer.
Economical situation is as follows:
We’re making 5gpt. We pay 82gpt, and get 52gpt from the Turks for 9 more turns. However, we also pay 50gpt unit support, and our peace treaty with Theo expires in 9 turns as well (we pay 17gpt). Since we have 140 in the bank, it should work out well – if only we can sell Iron to the Turks again! But honestly, without Longbows, Inquisitors and the Inquisition, I saw no chance at all.
Start research on Education, unknown so far.
Move surplus troops towards the Byzantine border. Found the 1st of the Wealth producers.
IBT:
Nothing related to us.

Turn 13: 1254 AD
Found 2 more Wealth producers, join a few native Workers, and our income jumps from -1 to +18.

Turn 14: 1257 AD
Income to +24.
IBT:
Poland joins Sweden against Germany. Aix-la-Chapelle completes the Krak.

Turn 15: 1260AD
I’ll stop here. I’d suggest to found another useless town 2 SE of Frankfurt, and one more to poach the Wheat from Bursa. Merge native Workers where appropriate, we have plenty of Slaves. And IMHO we should fight the Byzantines again.

Score is 17285 for us, and 21775 for Byz

We can only make trades with Civs at war with France (Turks!), and during peace renegotiations. We should be able to get Professional Armies from Germany for Iron and Horses in a couple of turns.
However, peace with Byzantines will expire soon. The last time we fought them, they seemed to have planned to attack us – no other explanation why they had so many offensive troops nearby. But now it looks like they’re pretty occupied with the Turks.
IMHO we must cripple/ eliminate them now. The Poles won’t yield enough VPs to win, and by the time we finish them, Byzantium would have won this.
Be prepared, this war will be bloody; expect no less than 10 Vet mercenaries in Constantinople, plus minor units. Use our Armies to fight intruders, and use large SoDs of Longbows, Cats and Pikes for siege wars; use Spies or Inquisitors to pillage everything. Byz Med and the Inquisition will finish in some turns. The only Civ Theo could buy that really would hurt us is Burgundy, France and the Vikings aren’t that strong. And we have a lot cities that can pump out Longbows or Inquisitors every turn, or at least a Longbow/ Pike every other turn.

Ok, I tried to upload the save for half an hour; I'll mail it directly to you, DH.

Problem is, we need Professional Armies even more than Seafaring. We now have 3 coastal towns, and it could be wise to prepare the Crusade while fighting the Byzantines. However, if we don't cripple them NOW, we won't reach Jerusalem in time...
Btw, during all my turns Byzantium captured one single (Turkish) city, the seam to run out of steam - not that they're gassed in terms of defense or economy, but I think they don't have much offensive units left.

@romeothemonk:
Regarding Castile and Celts:
I agree, Castile looks pretty easy; but consider a Byzantium as strong as in this game, near impossible to prevent them from winning so far away.

btw, they're 3 Civs left to be played. I won't make a Polish version, won't be anything else than Germany in light blue.
Anyone a good idea for Bulgars?
And I'm already testing the last Civ (though that requires much more modding ;) ).

Edit: gogf - Swiss Mercennaries

Answering a quesion or two.
Mercs are Swiss Mercenaries, 3-5-1 for 50 shields I think. Very nasty units. As soon as they appear the computer doesn't take many more cities.
Do the Abbassids still hold Jerusalem?? I have found that as soon as Jerusalem falls once it is really easy to capture as it usually has 2-3 defenders and 1 offensive unit in it. If the Byzantines wouldn't go crazy on the Abbassids, we could get the fatimids involved.

For any reason, they do hold it. IIRC, not a single Abbassid city fell in the last 45 turns! We could drag in the Fatimids (we have Techs above them) - if only anyone would sign MAs with us... :(

In general, I think we can take Jerusalem, at least once we have Swissies and the BM; couple of Lonbows and Inqisitors should suffice. However, unless we have a save peace with Byzantium, we cannot dare to board ships, they already used Dromons to bombard Frankfurt.

Good recovery, Doc.

You are so right about the Byzantines. As soon as they declared they were all over the east with those cataphracts (catastrophes). I called ttheir bluff because I thought they were way too busy in the east to do more than mount a token offfensive. I had ecpected a stong defense but nowhere near the number of 'phracts that kept coming at us.

Preturn: Doc is right. Bringing down the Byzantine Empire is our best, and probably only, shot at victory. But it shall be no easy task. The Byzantines are quite possibly the mightiest empire on earth, and enemies surround us on all sides. My screw-up has left us in a difficult position, as making military alliances will be very difficult. We have some advantages left, however. The Byzantine army is far, far away, and if our initial attack can seize Madera and Adrianople we will be able to cut off Greece from Constantinople itself. The city is now size 13, which means they have mercantilism. Taking the mightiest city in all of Christendom will not be easy, but we do have Trebuchets, and judicious use of artillery should help even the odds. Our army will be slow moving anyway, since we lack the advanced cavalry or amphibious units of the other civs. If at all possible, the Turks and the Danes (Or any of the Viking civs, but the Danes have a city on Crete and another in the Sinai, so they will be able to get into the fray faster) will be brought in to the war. We will focus on building and upgrading Trebuchets as we marshal our hordes for the assault. Wake our armies and MDI, and start them on the road south. Biatorbagy is swapped from a granary to a trebuchet. It is size 8 already, and the scenario will likely end, one way or the other, before a granary would make much of a difference either way. Rush a courthouse.

invasionplan1.JPG

IBT: The Fatmids will take peace, straight up. I decided not to bother, hoping they are providing war happiness. The Turks and the Norse fight outside Nuremberg (Black Sea). The Poles declare on the Danes. The Cordovans declare on the Abbassids. Jerusalem and Damascus are now isolated and cut off.

Turn 1: Blow our entire treasury upgrading four catapults to trebuchets. A couple of Marketplaces finish, improving our GPT by +3 despite the fact that unit support is now up to 43 gpt a turn.

IBT: Swedish berserks whale on Nuremberg. We have a settler in the area ready to poach.

Turn 2: Merge a couple more native workers into Vidin. Shave a turn off the inquisition, but forces me to hire a specialist. Right clicking a Swedish stack reveals something odd: a Swede leader trapped out in the middle of nowhere.

IBT: The Swedes raze Turkish Nuremberg. Polish troops begin massing on our border; hopefully they are just chasing down wandering Danish berserks, because we are in serious trouble if they attack us. The Germans start the Hanseatic League, presumably in Bremen.

Turn 3: Poach, founding a city with a name I couldn’t possibly pronounce, a tile NW of the ruins of Nuremberg. GPT back up to 25. Byz VP are remaining pretty much the same, but if Damascus, Jerusalem, or Baghdad falls they’ll get a big boost. We are up to 11 trebs, 33 MDI and 8 Longbows. We are still weak to Byz and Burgundy, average to the Turks.

IBT: The Germans and the Poles keep fighting an archer war. The Kievans want to swap Territory maps, sure, np.

Turn 4: Still preparing. Education is now widely known.

IBT: Norse declare on the Byzantines, for no real reason. D

Damascus falls.

Turn 5: Time to saddle up. I’m guessing that the Byzantine army in the Middle East will take at least 5 turns or so to reach us if it is comprised of Cataphracts. Infantry will take longer, of course, but Theodora will almost certainly start rush buying Swiss Mercs the moment her borders are threatened. The two prongs of our army pour into northern Greece, ready to begin the siege of Madera and Adrianople next turn. Both have vet Swiss Mercs on top. Money #1 takes a side trip, waking a regular merc and capturing byzantine settler before they can retreat into Adrianople. I cannot afford to open an embassy with the Turks this turn, but note that they will buy our quarry for 26 GPT. We only have one source left, but aren’t going to be building coliseums or aqueducts any time soon. I will wait until next turn so I can see how much an alliance would cost.

IBT: The good news: The Byz counter is weak, killing an exposed longbow and a pike. The bad news is that the Turks have signed peace with France. Crap

Turn 6: Still able to get 32 GPT out of Osman for quarry. Trebs go 3/5 at Madera, which appears to have one vet, one regular, and one conscript merc defending. First, I send a left over elite Rider after a wounded Byzantine spy and:
Magyar_Leader.JPG

YES!!! Not sure what I’ll use him for (army obviously), probably Longbows. Horka Bulscu runs over to Sredets and forms an army. Our trebs at Adrianople are less lucky, hitting only once. (Only three are in range though). Money #2 attacks Madera, killing the conscript and the regular Mercs, taking some damage from treb fire. Well, they will be our trebs soon. An elite MDI goes next, but dies. Fine, Longbow times. Kill the last merc, promote to Elite, and Madera is ours, along with three more Trebs. 3 other longbows, not needed right this second, run back to Sredets and join the army, Destroyer of Cities. It has terrible defense, of course, but should do nicely when it comes to cracking city defenses. Destroyer of Cities heads out to attack Kutmestchita (or something) a size three city with a quarry resource we need. They can then drive south and take the byzantine luxuries for us. If we can just take Constantinople, we can cut the Byzantines in half. Money # 1 attacks Adrianople, killing the vet merc, and leaving a SPY on top. Of course, the spy kills the Elite MDI who goes next. The veteran MDI and a left over rider have no trouble killing the spies and their inquisitor buddy, and Adrianople is ours. Raze it, since Constantinople will just flip it if we try and keep it. Army Group left sends reinforcement to hit Constantinople from the other direction. Money #2 and his trebs will come along next turn. Turkish gold and added unit support brings us to +77 gpt.

IBT: A Byzantine inquisitor wanders by, but doesn’t attack. That all you got, Theodora? Jerusalem does fall though. Al-Mansur is one the ropes, but he still holds the size 12 Baghdad and size 11 Basra Odd. A Fatmid sword runs out of the fog near Constantinople. RoP?

Turn 7: Shift troops around. Destroyer of Cities kills two vets Mercs in K-town, promoting once. Unfortified L-bow exposed; sword finishes it off, promotes, and takes the city. Keep the city; it’s only size two and a former Bugler city at that.

IBT: The Byzantines capture a bunch of our Trebs after killing the guards. An inquisitor kills one of the MDI guarding Madera. The Byzantine fleet lands a pair of Inquisitors next to Constantinople; I forgot to factor sealifted troops into the equation, but so far we are doing fine. The Byzantines are too stupid to disband the trebs they stole; instead moving them into the open were a spy can get them back next turn. Salzburg flips to the franks somehow. I can’t help but suspect all of those French Inquisitors running around it. I’m not exactly sure how it could possibly flip to the French; could they have used Propaganda maybe? The Germans sign their death warrant when the Danes buy them in against the Burgundians. Smart Move , Otto. Oh, and it looks like that Fatmid Sword reached the area by Curragh.

Turn 8: MDI dispatch the Fatmid sword and the Byz Longbows who took our trebs last turn. Money #2 takes out the two Byzantine Inquisitor marines. Death, our elite* rider dies trying to finish off another inquisitor south of Madera. Death dies, but is avenged by another Elite rider patrolling the area. Trebuchets will commence the bombardment of the now size 14 Constantinople next turn.

IBT: Byzantine ships drop more troops in Constantinople. Lose another rider to a spy.

Turn 9: One of our spies pillages their Iron in Greece. They have plenty of other sources in Persia and Palestine, unfortunately. Trebuchet bombard Constantinople, but its mighty walls deflect several shots, and although I wound several Mercs, fresh vets always appears on top. More Trebuchets move into range. Without an army healed ups and ready to attack, I am content to just pillage the area this turn. Destroyer-of-Cities may also have to be brought to bear.

IBT: Well, here’s the good news. The Burgundians did not declare war on us. The Poles however did. The Byzantines bought them in against us. This may not be a bad thing, since we have a fair amount of troops poring out of our core, and the Poles are pretty backwards. As long as this doesn’t start a dogpile, we should actually be better off. The Byz counterattack in various locations with a total of 7 inquisitors and 3 longbows.

Turn 10: We finish the Inquisition in Vidin, and it hits 30 net shields, which is an inquisitor or trebuchet every turn. The capital builds Byzantine Medicine, and is at 44 shields, a Longbow or Pike every turn. We could also start the intelligence agency, I suppose, but I don’t think that is a good idea. Take out the polish stack hanging around Debrecen, and capture their settler. More slaves can’t ever have to many slaves. Start killing off the exposed Byzantine units. 17 Trebuchets bombard Constantinople, and land a grand total of 3 hits. I will leave many units unmoved; to give the next leader the most flexibility in regards to attacking Poland and conduction the invasion of Byzantium, particularly Constantinople. Even our MDI armies will have trouble taking on fortified Mercs in a Metro-sized city. VP wise, we are about 80 short of 20000, with the Byzantines having made it to about 25250 or so. I feel confidant that we still have a good shot, as long as the Byzantines are contained and we pick up some extra VP’s by taking the much less well defended Polish cities. Tech-wise, I doubt we will find it easy to buy tech, but saving up for some steals is a possibility. Our income after the Inquisition finished was over +90 GPT, although unit support quickly brought it back down.
The Save
SiegeofConstantinople.JPG

Nice execution, DH.

I will call got it. Probably get to play Tuesday evening. I will probably try a different tack tho. I will use pikes and mercs to form a ring around Constantinople, while taking all of greece with the 3 armies. I will also send most new production after the Poles. I am sure Nople has 13+ defenders. It usually does, but some well timed pillage and waits will help get Theo desperate. Plus the luxuries of Greece and the nice size 6-12 cities will really help us. That was some of the best generalling I have seen there DH. All is forgiven on the Treaty. (Plus as a general rule I pillage treaties whenever advantagous, and I think the MA scenario and the ROR scenario should require treaty breakage for historical accuracy). This probably will get to Bede but end in his capable hands.

Well played, DH!
Completely agree on a long siege for Constantinople; however, we can starve it, but not isolate it due to the Harbor. And yes, beat on the Poles for easy VPs.

Be careful about the Kill ratio; we can win this only if we minimize casualties, so MDI Armies against healthy Vet SMs is a bad idea...but Inquisitors will rock in Poland.

DH, Salzburg was French at start of my turns, then Danish in between; but there were only Frankish citizens, no Germans left - the assimilation rate favors the AI Civs at large (in fact, that's because they play 'Regent').

And breaking treaties...well, it may be historivally accurate, but not even the Catholic Civs would have broken a MA agiants a far away, weak opponent were they received gpt :p

Long has the ruler of the Magyars hungered for the blood of his neighbors. Finally it has come to pass. Blood must be spilled. The previous rulers had dictacted the opponents. The new king had to determine how much blood should be shed.
This is how much blood was shed:
Preturn: Reshuffle for anti-greece operations. Lost Destroyer of Cities!! The first of many great heroes to fall. A Right of Passage was granted to the Danes and to the Franks.
IBT: A brave MDI sacrafices himself so his comrades can retreat.
Turn 1: Kill intruding swiss Mercs. Move towards Larissa and Krackow.
IBT: The Poles wish to fight and finally start bringing an army to face the mighty magyars. Denmark and England stop the bloodshed. Madara Culture flips and we lose a rider.
Turn 2: Retake Madarra. Our mighty heroes spawn a great leader to replace the fallen destroyer of cities. The name is even carried on.
