Does Anyone Else Think of it As the "Potato Palace?"

You can't do the joke Potala/Potato in french, because the word Potato is said like "Earth's Apple" (but we have the word "patate" for sweet potato, but the link isn't that obvious to make with Potala). So, Potala Palace is leaning more for "Pas 'llé du pote à là", that mean roughly "He didn't show up to his friend from here" in my native backward place. As you can see, this is a move as diplomatic as the wonder.

I tend to prononce Kilwa Kisiwani: Kilwa Kilsani, even if "Kissi Wani" could be translated into "I want a kiss" in the local language where I live right now. And, there is some wonders that sound like phrase like:
  • "Encore ? Va-t'en !" (Angkor Vat), meaning "Again? Go away!" (because the wonder is lame)
  • "A pas d'"En-a"" (Apadana), meaning "Doesn't have (something) that you have" (because the wonder have all-purpose slots that are actually empty)
  • "Oh, ça gaze?" (Orszaghaz), meaning "Oh, how you doin?" (because you have sudden desire to go say hello to City-State)
  • "(Stade) Mare à canard" (Maracanã Stadium), meaning "Duck pond Stadium", (that just sound fun to say it)

Of course, the religious wonders have a special place with some french-english mix like the KotoKU-In or MinakSHI, which is related under-the-belt humor, something totally suitable for religious building.

When I look at the Civics tree, I always read it as "Medieval Fairies."

Havent tought of potato yet, but I love the Nubian citynames:

Heh

Kerma (means creme in Finnish)

Bugdumbush - I take it as Bug-dumb Bush (you know who he is)

Well I rarely build the Potato Palace so that's not really a nickname I use.

However, I do call the rainforest wonder Chicken Pizza all the time.

I do call certain city states by their food names once in a while... such as Baloney, and Candy.

My brother once saw me playing as Nubia and he asked "Why do your people live in Creme? Didn't you figure out anything more clever or are you just hungry?"

Funny, I frequently go for the potato palace, but have yet to eat, I mean build, chicken pizza.

When I decide to build/buy a monument, I tell myself that I’ll have a moment in that city. Granary appears when you call for Gran(d) Mary.

RIPamids is a very useful wonder.

I must have a sweet tooth, so I send out liberal amounts of caramel to the distant shores to entice AI come closer to the coast, where they are vulnerable to my lashing them with the battlewhips.

Me too. Then I think of the Black Sabbath song Fairies wear boots.

If anybody was wearing boots in medieval Europe they were Trend Setters (Fairies as Influencers?). Boots had been worn by central Asian nomads since the beginning of pastoral horsemanship (before 1000 BCE, at least) and in China since, but an English document during the 100 Years War describes "a stiff high shoe of a type not seen heretofore with high scuppers and nails in the sole . . ."
So at least in western Europe, they were a New Thing

But to return to the Thread, if I'm having a glass of wine while playing (rare, but it happens) I find myself building the Grape Wall of China or playing as Alexander the Grape or Peter the Grape (or, Boshie Peter, Lenin's distant predecessor, for a multi-lingual butchering of titles)

No. I have never thought of the Potala Palace as the Potato Palace. I do think of the Nubian UU as the Potato Archer, though. I might also at some point have thought of another wonder as the Estadio de Macarena.

And I admit that my thoughts drift when I see the Cree city of Peepeekisis.
