Today was kinda odd multiplayer game.

It seemed like the opponent had stronger swordsmen than usual.

His life expectancy was 23 years, mine was 20 years.

Does life expectancy influence the health of units ???

(Defenses bonussess didn't really play that much of a roll for him)

no. The random number generator can make it seem like they are stronger.

Or perhaps his were veterans and yours were regular?
