Does razing a city affect diplomacy?

As I understand it your warmonger tag is now heavily based on the percentage of cities you take from an AI. But what about razing, does it count as taking a city, or is it worse?

I also seem to be seeing that getting a city gifted to you in a peace deal does not add to your tag, can anyone confirm? I'm not sure if it's because my AI allies love me so much at this point, that they just don't care anymore.

Cities given in peace deals don't count as far as I know, although I think razing counts.

I would think razing a city would count even if you were given the cities as a peace deal.

"We surrender, here take these two cities as the terms."

"What?! You are burning them to the ground?!"

"What a warmongering menace!"

Ha, yeah that would be a dick move. I'm more interested about cities that you conquer then raze. I'm having to much success with being gifted cities too start razing them now, I'm finding that if I can tank the happiness getting a decently pop'd city with all of it's infrastructure intact beats beats 'winning' a ruin populated by corpses.

i noticed the AI loves to gift cities now more so than pre-bnw and they can even be taken advantage of in this way. Build a large army > declare war on civ > move units nearby civ/maybe attack a little > wait for peace offering including free citie(s) > rinse and repeat after 10 turns.

I think razing a city counts close or about as much as taking one - so if you take a city and raze it, it feels like it counts for taking two. Certainly, I got heavy red warmonger penalties for just taking and razing a single city. Normally, it takes two conquers.

If you are the aggressor, razing seems to generate more hate. In my current game, a very aggressive shaka is laying waste to the world. He's miles away from me. I had camel archers to burn, so I asked 3 friendly AI's to DoW with me. The following turn a diff civ asked mt to DoW, so I did immediately. I tore thru shaka, razed 8 of his cities/puppets. My friends never showed up to help btw..

In the end, no one, including sjaka had hate for me, despite being murdered from 14 cities to 2.

That's a shame, it does make sense though. On the whole with the AI settling less and more sensibly I've not needed to raze as much in BNW, except Alex is puking up cities all over the place.

I have a couple of follow up question too. Do DOFs affect how much warmonger hate your friends have for you? I've been backstabbed by Hiawatha and I'm not sure if it's because of the hidden warmonger hate, or because of my work military near his borders, probably both.

Secondly, if I have an enemy but we share the same DOFs and he denounces me, is he just garnering hate for himself from our group?

Hiawatha seems to backstab regardless of how friendly/peaceful you are. Though I have found my friends turn a blind eye to my warmongering, as long as I don't DoW too often. 1 war every now and then seems fine.. DoW'ing on 3 civs back to back to wipe them off the face of the earth... they get warmonger hate.

If you share a war with someone, they won't have warmonger hate for you.
