Does the mid-end gaem seem to go by to fast to you ?

It seems by the time I am in the mid-end game stage I am cranking out techs fast enough I cannot keep up on building improvements and troops. Too many things to build and not enough time/production to build everything. Must be my anal-retentive side showing through. I also cannot seem to get a significant lead in tech for any period of time.

Anyone else feel the mid-end game just flies by? I know it seems to slow up when you are fighting a war or have a ton of units to move but it sure does buzz by.

Hmmmm, I guess i am not doing a good job explaining what I mean. Oh well, hope you all figure it out :p

Thats just the point. It slows down to a grind when you're at war.

Considering war is a very important aspect of the game; it's pretty crucial to keep war fun for everyone. Grinding is okay; but I'd do anything to avoid the annoying mind-numbing pain that was warring in Civilization 3.

If the game runs too slowly for you; you could always turn on Epic Speed mode.

A lot of people agree with you, the thread discussing this in the mod forum is nine pages long. I've modded the game so that research is more expensive, unit production faster and tech costs increase by 25% each era. It's helped a lot.

I think my problem is that I don't like spending a week on a game.

I like the fact that in Civilization 4, I can win or lose a game within a 6 hour sitting.

I'm really not someone who reads manuals. What's the main differences between normal and quick and epic speed modes?

I yesterday won a Prince level game, on Epic, continents map. It was 1899 when I finished the space ship.

Time played: 5h34mins.

Yes, this game goes waaaay to fast. Switching off the space race victory condition helps a lot though. Expect plenty of modern warfare to come in the space race's place.

More or less turns, but slower/faster production and research to match. Thngs that stay the same regardless of speed: upgrade costs (and with more/less turns of income, it hence becomes easier/harder to upgrade), movement (which in turn means it is easier to explore on epic, harder on quick), and resistance (relatively easier to capture and subdue cities on Epic, harder on quick).

I play on Epic and the Ancient through early Industrial age is just the right speed, but after the middle of the Industrial age, the tech just blow by. I think I might take some of the above poster's suggestions on modding the late game research costs.

How did you get the tech costs to increase by 25% each era? I can only see how to get the overall tech costs to increase.

ive adjusted the XML file on Epic speed so that research takes 1/3 longer and units/buildings build 1/3 faster than a "normal" epic game. this took care of the speed through the tech tree and units /buildings being quickly obsolite.

it seems to be a nice balance. soon I shall win my first noble game. finally!

It was done to balance the game I think. In Civ3, you would be out of the ancient era in no time and you could spend forever in the modern era.

A mod to do a proper balance is probably in order though.
