Im attempting to make a byzantine city series. But perhaps i ovedid it with populating it with too many buildings (and that is only perhaps the small city). Does this look any good at all, or too confusing?

Yeah, Espeically with walls...Walled cities, were always extremly crowded because everyone wanted to be inside, and be safe.

Well i can always add new buildings, i added/made a huge basilica (well i tried to make a model of st Demetrios of Thessalonike). Its the towering church.

Ill probably add a lot more stuff, and a good question is if walls should be in all cities... (at least in part)

Yes! Those are awesome. Now, to see the rest...

ps - varwnos, glad to see more city graphics. The more, the merrier :goodjob:

Hi RedAlert :)

did you check my chinese and (more or less new, i uploaded them two days ago) greek series?

The byzantine series is very far from complete, can you propose any cool walls?

I probably will not try to make the Agia Sophia, too much work, possibly i will make another basilica or a crossed basilica.

I have seen your chinese and (unmistakeably ;) ) greek cities. Let me tell you I think that they both have the same high quality as your byzantine cities in progress. Well done!

I'm not 100% sure about walls, but I would suggest you take a look at skam0073's byzantine cities for an idea.

As for Hagia Sofia, a while back I put together a byzantine cathedral building when I was making some cities. So, if you wanted to use it, I would be more than happy to share it with you.

Anyway, keep up the good work. :)

These look pretty damn good to me, varwnos. More excellent work. I glanced at your Chinese cities, I'll give them a more thorough look-over sometime soon... if I can keep track of my brain :crazyeye:

@RedAlert: whatever happened to your Byzantine city series? I could see myself combining it with varwnos's for my own devious purposes :devil2: ;) . Seems like you've got a lot of city-projects up in the air -- or is that just my imagination?

Ty :)

Im considering adding some non-greek looking churches as well. For example this drakula type reformed (i think? or is it again orthodox?) wallachian temple, simply because it looks satanic :devil2:

It could be orthodox, i hope someone can tell... There are some bulgarian churches looking like it, without the horn-like edges though :devil2:

I don't know, but I'd have thought that any church with a great big cross on top is far more likely to be Orthodox than Reformed.

I like the huge basilica (for the largest size of city, no doubt) but I don't think you should add walls, because it would be a bit confusing given that we need walled/non-walled versions.

The problem is that one has to mind the analogies. If you have a building you want to make very prominent then placing it next to another very prominent building will ruin part of the effect. I do not know if the large yellow-roofed columned building (it is supposed to be a university, or a library, i think there was a university in Constantinople very early on) ruins most of the analogies, but i suspect it does...

The small city size probably can be the one in the upper left corner of the pic, although i might rework it some more.
Also note that this isnt an in game preview, so colours will look a bit less bright i think.

The "satanic" church looks a bit armenian too, so it can be byzantine.

Ty :)

Here are twp pics of the Agios Demetrios.

As for walls probably something like the second city in the pic, with perhaps some more wall lines as in the theodosian walls.

The thing is that as they are atm the cities dont cover that much size...

I replaced the out of place looking university-library, with a rotonda church, which in theory is a model of st. George of Thessalonike. Built by the romans in the end of the 3d century BC, it was first used as a non-christian temple.

Here is also a pic of it in real life ;)

Well, was this replacement a good move?

The library looked too yellow, too bright and optimistic as well. The byzantine era was in many ways the opposite of classical Greece, although both light and dark existed in all periods ofcourse.

According to some philosophers (more prominently Nietsche) the only culture that always was dark (after a point lost in time anyway) was the jewish one. I must confess that i am more captivated by darkness than light though.

This is really great varwnos.

It is crowded, but I like it. A few suggestions, though. The crosses that face to the right seem too large, the ones to the left, however, look good and more proportional to the scale. The new rotunda church looks ok but the contrast seems to be different from the rest of the city - the shadows don't look dark enough. And the last thing is, a lot of peole comment about your rooftop color, I agree that they look a little flat and monotone. If they were a litle more realistic and less cartoon-like.

All in all though I think these will look great for the Medieval Byzantine region.

P.S. - I've never been to your city, and so I've never seen the St. Demetrios basilica before. I had no idea that anything that nice still existed. Nice.
