I have read that two continents is rough and it is because there's a long time between defeating the Civs on one's continent then having to wait for galleons to attack the other continent. The time needed to get to galleons allows the Civs on the other continent to advance in their military capability, so even when I had galleons, my Praets would have been eaten up by the advanced mil units on the second continent. This caused another delay while I researched gunpowder and riflemen which I used to settle the little islands and build gold producing markets, grocers and banks.
I had conquered my continent (two AI Civs) by 800AD and it was 1795AD before I was ready to invade the second continent. I achieved a Domination Victory in 2000AD after eliminating Genghis Khan and was beating up Tokugawa.
One tactic was to set Research at 0% and Culture at 30% after I achieved Modern Armour and Mechanized Infantry so that I could gobble up the open tiles quicker. After defeating Genghis, I raised the Culture to 50% to keep back Frederick and gobble up the open tiles even quicker. I didn't even have to eliminate Tokugawa, just eat enough of his lunch.
Who da man?
This was playing on Noble level. I think I'm going to go one level higher and see if I can win.
