Domestic trade route confusion

What is required for there to be a trade route between my cities on different continents? I have harbors in cities on all continents/islands, and there is even a clear route between them all without leaving my territory. Even then, no strategic resources or luxuries are being shared between the continents. I want to begin a war on the Iriquoi and I have about 15 knights I need to upgrade to cavalry, but I have no horses on that continent and it'll take too long to ship them all back. This is on vanilla civ3, latest patch.

Between continent to continent, you need a harbor (available with Map Making) or Airport (flight). Usually, it'll be a harbor. If you have a harbor in City A on one continent and a harbor in City B on another, and there is a clear path (ie; no units from civs you are at war with / barbarians) to each city from each other with only COAST, you it'll start trading right away. If there is even one SEA tile, or more, you need Astronomy. If there is one OCEAN tile or more, you need Navigation OR Magnetism.

Don't forget that subs can block, if you have gotten that far. Most likey you need Navigation or Mag to use ocean tiles.

That must be it. I'll go for astronomy even though I'm behind in techs (damn Zulu forced me into a war and I've been behind ever since). I won't be far behind once all the other civs once my cavalry get through with them.

Is there a way to see what percentage of the land I control without retiring? I think my shortest path to victory is domination (I'd like to avoid fighting the Persians), but I'd like to see how close I am.

F8 if you have C3C. Otherwise get one of the utilities such as CivAssist or Mapstat.

OK, that worked. I don't know how many cavalry I had at the end, but it was a lot, probably 1/3 upgraded from knights. This was my first game in a really long time, a Cavalry rush probably wouldn't work so well on levels higher than Monarch. I had practically every city on my home continent making cavalry or musketmen (to leave behind in the captured cities). Never did end up fighting Babylon, that would have taken a lot of cavalry :p

Calv rush work as long as you have enough and the have rifles or less. If they have metros, you need better or armies. If they have infanry forget it.

The only thing levels have to do with it, is that the higher it is the more likely they are to have greater numbers in any given city and the sooner they get past rifles.
