After a succesful attempt by blizzard's team which can be found here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=375518 , I've decided to set up yet another RFC succession game. This one will introduce Spain and it's path to a world domination.

Roster:
1. Ororo
2. blizzrd
3. nody
4. Ichabod
5. Jusos2108
6. Kurokami
7. Science Rules

Registration closed!

3000BC unlocked start (to make things slightly more interesting), Monarch Difficulty, With most recent patch of Rhye's and Fall of Civilization BTS v1.187

SG rules

  1. We must win by Domination victory only! 2/3 UHV is encouraged as the extra Golden Age is surely going to help us.
  2. We are not restricted to our stability map, however, we must have under our control Netherlands, Austria-Hungary and Phillipines. This means at least one city in each of the enlisted locations.
  3. We must win both conqueror events and destroy (not vassalize!) Incas and Aztecs.
  4. We can only run Christianity as our state religion and must spread it to all our cities. We must not adopt free religion.
  5. We must build at least 3 Christian Cathedrals.
  6. We must try to establish a strong navy and maintain a naval superiority. This includes at least one GG ship which will be named Christoph Columbus :P
  7. We must adopt Police State and Nationhood by 1930 to represent the fascist Spain.
  8. 10 turns per player, unless by prior arrangement.
  9. Reloading turns on consensus only (majority vote required).
  10. We will use Science Rules's citynamemanager map.

Blizzrd hope you don't mind that I borrowed couple of points from yours, but I just found them to be appropriate for this game as well...

The deadline for registration is on Wednesday, when the save will be uploaded. However, feel free to discuss the generic strategy e.g. city placement, tech path,...

Let's show the English that Spain can do better! :P

One thing before I join:

I would like to request that Madrid is founded as capital on the exact spot.

EDIT: I would also like to see Barcelona and Bilbao, but that's not a dealbreaker.

EDIT 2: Please change it to 600 AD start, because otherwise you have a 50% chance of no Christianity and a Buddhist or Islamic Europe. I really like the religions to be historically accurate.

I'd like to join, if you don't mind!

I prefer prlaying the 3000BC map, sice I like it random :P

Maybe we could reload until we get a map with christianity minimally spread.

I don't mind settling the real life important city locations over the best ones in the game, but I'll need some help finding the exact right spots (haven't played RFC enough to know it by heart).

And I think that having a very stong spanish america would be nice too!

Works for me.

No worries!

I think it is Ororo's call and 3000BC has been selected. You could always start your own SG thread if you want another Spanish 600AD game. But I feel that it is the right of the organiser to choose the basic parameters.

well you know im up for this :D
EDIT: with the Lousiana Purchase territory are we going to settle the area, or can we only capture that area?

Well, if people prefer 600 AD start, I can change this condition, but so far I have received only positive feedback regarding the 3000BC one.
Ad religions: The save I'm going to upload has 20% Christianity spread and a holy city which hasn't been razed. Thus it looks promissing...
Ad Madrid: I find it a pretty decent city, but again, it's a matter of compromise so we'll have to wait till the majority express their opinion.

I will make an Iberia dotmap, but I won't be able to get on my gaming PC till wednesday. So if you guys, have any thoughts, please share them :)

Some quick notes regarding priorities:

1) Techs:
Astronomy line - circumnavigation will add yet another +1 movement to our already-fast ships, which is extremely important in the colonization phase, we also need astronomy for privateers, which are the key for achieving naval superiority (and getting some extra cash as well ;)
Engineering - not sure if we can get Notre Dame (it might have been built already since certain civs prioritize engineering for the Great wall), but the key thing here are Citadels. This is one of my favourite UBs. Not only it adds culture, defense and engineering but also +1 trade route and most importantly +5 EXP(!!!) for the Siege. Build ana rmy of trebs, get a GM and upgrade themto 11 EXP cannons
Liberalism - this might be a challenge, but a free tech is always handy
2)Cities
3, 4 cities in Spain, possibly one in North Africa (with at least 2 food resources)
We must also decide what to do with Portugese. I haven't mentioned Portugal in the rules as I personally dislike their presence in Iberia so I tend to eliminate them. But since this is a very ahistorical way I say we vote...
3) Diplomacy
The Christianity rule will influence this a lot and since we will probably use the 3000 BC start we might end up being surrounded by heathens :D
4) Espionage
Netherlands may not be as useful as in other games since we must eventually capture it.

I would also like to name our units just to make the game a bit more lively. Spanish names are a must :)

Haha, you wanna beat the French to New Orleans, right? Well, no rule says you can't :)
But we'll get to that later (when we're about to start colonizing) don't worry.

The only possible restriction for our expansion might be Brasil and the portugese territories - see the above post.

i don't see how portugal would be a problem, with the Iberian Union that was in affect during parts of colonization.

Since we are going to found Madrid(?), I would suggest the following city placement in Iberia: Madrid, Barcelona (1N from the usual spot, 2S from the France's horse), Santiago and Cadiz (2SW) from Madrid. Santiago can work three se food resources and Cadiz two. Naturally this would mean that we raze Lisbon after Portugal spawns. IMO that takes care of the Portugal versus historical -issue quite well.

About spying/research, I believe we two choices:
1. Since we going begin with the Astronmy line. I suggest that we spawn a Great Spy as our first GP (this we should do anyways) and steal Guilds and Engineering from Dutch + other stuff. While we wait for them to give us Guilds we tech the Liberalism line (Paper, Education).

2. Alternatively we can infiltrate France and hope that they tech the right techs (Guilds, Engineering) for us, which they usually do. We can also steal lots of money from them.

Personally I would go with the latter choice.

For Iberia, I like building Sevilla as my capital with Santander and Barcelona. Lisboa can be captured; or we could try to make Portugal our vassals. Vassalization would be a more historical relationship, but historicality isn't our number one goal.

For N. Africa, I think Melilla and S. Cruz de la Mar make for a good pair of cities, but the latter shouldn't be founded until much later in order to save upkeep.

BTW, I recommend we use my expanded citynamemanager map which includes Spanish placenames for a great deal of North America.

Sounds great, but can you give me some details on where to find it & how to make it work, please? :)

For the Iberian cities I would like to see Madrid, Léon (1E of Santiago) and Zaragoza (1 NW of Barcelona).

....JUST KIDDING! Madrid, Barcelona, Santiago, Bilbao and Cadíz.

...but I guess that's up to Ororo.

Put me on the list anyway! I trust you, Ororo, will make the best decision for a good historical/gameplay-balance.

First post updated, I will play the first round shortly and post the save and a report ASAP.

If you really want Bilbao (it's already too crowded), by all means raze Bordeaux first.

If you really want Bilbao (it's already too crowded), by all means raze Bordeaux first.

I played Spain quite a lot and I never razed any nearby cities. The culture of 'cramped' cities like Bilbao or Santiago will quickly overshadow France and Portugal if you start with building monuments, libraries, monestaries and temples before building barracks and units in those cities.

At the rennaissance I even steal the fish near Brest culturally without having razed Bordeaux.

BTW, conquering Portugal isn't necessary. Lisboa will flip to us long before the modern era if we build enough culture in Madrid.

Hint: Start with engineering so we can build the Notre Dame! It would also help us with happiness if we happen to conquer France and/or Portugal.

Oh... and do we have permission to conquer Rome and/or Greece if the opportunity occurs?

So I've just finished playing the first set. And it looks promissing! I followed the dot map made by Jusos as it introduced decent city sites with minimum overlap. I strongly recommend founding Cadiz next.

Turn 1: We switch civics and send settlers to the respective city sites to found Barcelona and Santiago. Madrid has been founded and immediately set to build Library. Research set on Compass (Yeah, I know that we're in anarchy but it's always safe to do these things asap.)

Turn 2: We meet Augustus Caesar of Rome. We didn't even have to bribe him to get OB as we share a war (probably Arabia). Santiago has been founded and set to build a workboat. Barcelona hasn't been founded yet, as the Barb culture encompasses its spot. However, our forces are sent to destroy that barb city.

Turn 3: We get our workers so I immediately assign them to improve nearby food resources.

Turn 4: Our forces approach Lugdunum, which is guarded by 2 Axemen only.

Turn 5: We use our 2 safe attacks vs barbs to capture Lugundum. We raze it, so that Barcelona can be founded on a decent spot. We meet Louis XIV. Again, thanks to a shared war, we don;t have to bribe him to get the OB. Espionage immediately assigned against the French. We finally found Barcelona! This spot is pretty nice as it won't have to share so many tiles with Madrid. It will need some decent culture though... Library queued in Barcelona. We send our Longbowmen to explore Europe.

Turn 6: Our veteran Swordsmen (7/2 EXP!!!) are sent to Barcelona to rest, while the Longbowmen explore more of the North Italy and Switzerland.

Turn 7: We discover Aemonia Iulia, which has Temple of Kukulkan. This means we won't be able to found Budapest unless we raze it. However, we can keep the city as well because this area did belong to Austria-Hungary...

Turn 8: Good News! We meet Greeks and they are running Christianity as their state religion! Thus we play nice and give them 10 gold. However, it's not enough to OB with them. So i decide to give them Code of Laws, which finally brings them to pleased! We now have the OB so let's hope Christianity spreads to us pretty soon! However, the Greeks are under heavy Barb pressure. I hope they can defend themselves...

Turn 9: Alexander is a greedy bastard! He asks for currency and I decide to give in. We will share a religion and every diplomacy bonus brings us closer to friendly... I also kindly ask Alex to give us 10 gold and he accepts. Thus, we have a guaranteed 10-turn peace treaty.

Turn 10: Library whipped in Madrid. I suggest using whip overflow to build a worker/settler next.

Additional notes:

Romans do have Engineering. Therefore, we might consider using the great spy against them...
Improve the food resources first as well as the Silver. It's gonna be a nice early boost to our commerce.
Found a next city, I strongly recommend Cadiz. This will seal the most of the Iberian Peninsula and no more cities will be needed.
Start building some army as well, especially one Galley which we can use to transport our troops to N. Africa. Our swordsmen can take CR 2 promotion which should be enough to take that city.
Build a courthouse in one of your cities, to be able to run a spy specialist and eventually produce a Great spy (our number 1 choice for the first GP).
Establish contact with Germany and England. Those trade routes are always nice to have.
Establish contact with Mali as well. Spiral Minaret is gonna be an extremely important wonder in this game.

Hope you like the set and please don't kill me for founding Barcelona on turn 5 :( I prefer a couple of strong cities rather than a ton of crappy ones ;)
