Don Quijote rules the world - SG for RFC

Nice play, nody. The Cadiz site isn't that bad, it can actually work pretty decent tiles. Btw, what happened to the Aemonia Iulia? It is now under German control...
There are 4 priorities now:
First and foremost assign a spy specialist at Turn 0! This way we can get the great spy one turn faster and we sure as hell need him. Build a regular spy as well...
Start building barracks and walls in production cities. This way they can immediately start building citadels as soon as we steal engineering. Knight + Treb combo seems the most effective against Portugese.
Build a Christian Missionary in Mellila next... We really need to spread Christianity to all our cities because that +25% from OR is huuuuge.
Meet Mali and trade for Divine Right. We have a stone so let's make some use of it: Spiral Minaret. With those gold-producing religious buildings we should be able to make profit even when running slider at 100%.

Oh and guys, I'm glad to see that you're so enthusiastic about the game :)

I can switch turns with Ichabod, if that's alright with him? I can play and report back tomorrow, so that Ichabod can play in the weekend. If nobody objects, I'll do that.

And here it is!

Turn 212: We change the warrior in Barcelona to a longbowman, we already have a warrior that we need to upgrade and don't have enough gold for another one.

The point of building warriors wasn't to upgrade them, ever. They were to assist with happiness in cities only and act as plague fodder. We don't need more Longobowmen for defence, we have wandering Longbows that could be better replaced back to our cities and reissued as Scouts/Explorers.

It flipped during my turn set after the German spawn.

Here is a better map of the Spanish Hasburg Empire.
Actually, Ljubljana is more historical than Budapest, which was Ottoman controlled during the time of Charles V.
________
If we build a city in the extreme SW of Iberia on the grassland, it won't be Cadiz, but rather it will be Palos and it will flip to Portugal when they spawn. I've noticed that Portugal will often found its second city there if given the opportunity. In that case, we can capture Faro instead and save ourselves the cost of building a settler.

It will be Palos but it won't flip to Portugal. I played on after my turnset and did this through to the Portuguese spawn and no flip.

Blizzrd,
OK, Rhye must've changed the Portuguese flip zone in one of the patches. The first time I ever played as Spain (which must've been 2+ years ago), I remember getting burned by having Palos flip to Portugal. Since then, I've never tried to found a city there. My usual plan for settling Iberia is to found my capital in Sevilla, as well as Santander & Barcelona (1s from where it is in this game); later on I capture Lisboa. It saves me the cost of building a settler and it also saves me the stability hit from razing Lisboa.

I hope we haven't lost that much by founding Cadiz instead of Palos.

Everyone,
Looking ahead, we'll probably have a few big decisions to make after we steal Engineering:
I assume we build monster trebuchets with our citadels and raze Lisboa first. Will our next objective be to send the army to Central Europe and take Hasburg lands? If that's the case, we should probably research gunpowder (unless we can somehow steal it).
Or will we focus on the New World and research Optics? In any case, I think it is immensely valuable to research gunpoweder before contacting the New World Civs. With gunpowder, we'll get Conquistadors instead of knights and cannons instead of trebuchets. After killing off the New World Civs (and learning Astronomy), we can bring those troops back to Europe and use them to invade Hasburg Central Europe.

Specialist Spy has not been assigned in Santiago, this was the point of building the Courthouse. Please assign a Spy immediately.

Agree that Cadiz has been founded in a poorer location than 1W would have been, for no discernable benefit. 1W would have been able to work both coastal food resources without expanding cultural borders, which is a big deal.

EDIT: We have surplus Clam (x1), Sheep (x1) and Wine (x2). Please trade these to somebody for cash if there are no happiness resources available. Persia will undoubtedly have some for trade if we make contact. Probably India also will.

EDIT: Please build a Forge in Santiago rather than an Ampitheater, which has only just been queued to commence. They have the same effect in terms of happiness because we have access to Silver near Barcelona, but the Forge is far superior because of the hammer output.

Turn 0 Spy specialist signed in Santiago; amphitheatre switched to forge. Sheep traded to Greece for 2gpt. I send our explorer from Germany towards Persia.

Turn 1 Our Galley kills a wounded barbarian trireme.

Turn 2 Mellila's borders expand. I am building a forge there, after the granary, first and then christian missionaries.

Turn 3 Nothing happens.

Turn 4 Two barbarian triremes approach from southwest, Santiago's forge is switched to a trireme. Luckily our work boat coming from Barcelona can just escape them to Mellila. We meet the Persians and trade crabs for cotton. Note that Babylon has been razed, but the Babylonians are still alive.:eek:

Turn 5 A joint Franco-Roman navy sinks the barbarian triremes.:D Forge is continued ahead of the trireme in Santiago.

Turn 6 Greece has researched Engineering and I choose to trade it and 20g for Feudalism and Compass. It a bit risky, but Greece doesn't have Guilds yet, so we will easily beat them to conquerors/circumnavigation. Lets just hope that they don't trade Compass around too much.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0002-9.jpg

Turn 7 We meet the Indians and trade wine for sugar.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0003-9.jpg

Turn 8 Nothing happens.

Turn 9 Our forge in Madrid has been improved. India has lots of cities.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0004-13.jpg
Civ4ScreenShot0005-12.jpg

Turn 10 Citadel is completed in Madrid, next up trebutchets and knights. We research Guilds, next Optics in 11 turns. Santiago has 15 turns left to generate a Great Spy.

Suggestions and notes:

-Portugal will spawn in two turns, we only need couple trebutchets and knights more (quequed in Madrid) to take them down and raze Lisboa. Other troops have already been assembled to Santiago and Madrid.
-Make sure to hook up the horse near Mellila, Portugal will take one ours for a while.
-After we have gotten the surplus horse back from Portugal or finished some kinghts, trade the horse to India. They'll give pretty much anything for it.
-The explorer should continue his journey towards China. This counts towards our circumnavigation as well. BTW, we shouldn't trade our map to anyone before we have circumnavigated.
-Build a spy within the next ten turns.

Nice play Jusos, I'm really curious how this develops :) But yeah, we should attack Portugal asap. Let's just hope they don't settle Ponta Delgada - that annoying little island, which requires amphibious attacks and thus siege is useless.

EDIT: Ichabod, please MEET THE MALI! :)

If you capture Lisboa, Portugal will most definately collapse. Ponta Delgada would become independent and easy to capture.

One last time: Please don't raze Lisboa, it's a great city! If I was Portuguese I would abandon this game... :(

One last time: Please don't raze Lisboa, it's a great city! If I was Portuguese I would abandon this game... :(

Nonsense. Please raze Lisboa, capturing a city that is right between two of our cities would be a complete waste.

Please also trade Clam (we have 1 surplus currently) to India for Spices immediately.

Should I try to trade for divine right right away? And start building the Minaret?

So, build some troops to raze Lisboa (I guess I'm the "most portuguese" of the roster, but I don't mind razing it :P). Build a spy. Meet mali. Trade surplus resources. Try to meet China.

Anything else?

Edit: Ah, research optics next, I guess.

One last time: Please don't raze Lisboa, it's a great city! If I was Portuguese I would abandon this game... :(

Our cities already have some overlap and adding Lisboa would be a complete overkill. It is not going to help with domination either - we can encompass the same area with just 4 cities. And lastly...we will be one step closer to the 10 city gauntlet.
That's three very significant cons and I can see any reasonable benefit to counter them. Raze it, please.

Should I try to trade for divine right right away? And start building the Minaret?
Edit: Ah, research optics next, I guess.

Well, Portugese are the number one issue now. However, as soon as they're destroyed we should start building that wonder. It will be significant boost to our and in my opinion, it's the key wonder in this game.
Yep, continue on astronomy beeline. Oh btw., if you find a city that has nothing to build, build an explorer next (a caravel can carry one so let's use him to explore some tribal huts)

Turn 0:
-Clams for Spices with Asoka

Spoiler :

-Forest chop near barcelona -> switched rax to spy (he is fortified in Barcelona, didn't send him to enemy cities to avoid him being discovered).

-Barb trireme entered our borders, protected our seafood with recentrly built trireme.

Turn 4:
-We lost our trade routes with Asoka - switched garrisons to avoid unhapiness - micromanaged a bit.

Turn 5:
-Portuguese destroyed barb trireme with a galley.

-Santiago finished barracks -> Knight

-Barb camel archer near Mellila (he pillaged our horses - I had to stop the trade with Rome due to that) -> Our longbow killed him when he attacked the city, but I switched production from christian missionary to a pikeman after the forge, just to be safe.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0014.jpg

-Sheep for two gold with france

-Persia collapsed, that's why we lost trade with India

Turn 6:
-Cadiz whip forge -> Harbor

Turn 7:
-Barcelona finished Rax -> knight

-Santiago whip knight -> sword.

-Madrid trebuchet -> Knight

Turn 8:
-Madrid whip Knight -> Knight

-barcelona whip Knight -> harbor

Turn 9:
-Santiago Sword -> trireme

-Declare on Portugal with 2 trebs, 1 catapult, 3 knights, 3 swords and an axe against 2 longbows, 2 crossbows and 2 pikes -> capture 3 workers

Civ4ScreenShot0015.jpg

Turn 10:
-Capture and raze Lisboa -> lost one catapult, captured another worker

-Horses for dye, spices, sugar, 2 gold with asoka

NOTES:
-I razed Lisboa (sorry nody) due to more votes asking to do so.

-Spy is fortified in Barcelona

-There's a trireme exploring africa - I'm building another one for safety, there's a barb trireme in our shores and the portuguese navy too.

-Santiago is working the spy speacialist - be careful, because the governor keeps adding other specialists. I screwed up and let him work a scientist for 2/3 turns, I guess -> great scientist odds are at 6%. Sorry about that, but the heavy whipping and portuguese tile steal ended up confusing me, hope we can still get the GSpy.

-Our 3rd source of horses is getting online next turn (barb camel pillaged it near mellila) -> trade it to Rome for stone so we can build the Minaret (queued in Madrid).

-I haven't micromanaged carefully after razing Lisboa. Next player should do it before ending the turn.

Very good play Ichabod. I can't see the save, but that was a very productive turn set.

I think we should just ignore Ponta Delgada. We don't really want the city for ourselves and given a couple of hundred years, Portugal will ultimately collapse anyway. Unless the plague wipes out all of the Portuguese defenders for us, we should just leave this city alone.

Speaking of plague, are we prepared with some cheap fodder units in each of our cities? We don't want to lose our best defensive units for nothing.

Sorry, guys, forgot the save.

We have a lot of workers... we could use them for plague fodder... don't know if that works.

We could trade our iron away so we can build warriors instead of archers/spearman for plague fodder.

We could trade compass for 200 gold with france, there's no other tech trades avaiable.

Good job razing Lisboa and taking care of the Portuguese matter.:goodjob: We need a navy though, however Portugal is probably eager to sign peace soon, so the navy shouldn't be wasted against them.
