I'm one of those unlucky people that can't play Civ 1 on XP SP2 (by the way, if anyone knows how to set it, just shout), so I use DosBox.

The problem is, DosBox always keeps the CPU usage on 100% for some reason... is there a setting I may change for that? It sounds crazy to me that a DOS emulation should take up 99% of CPU (from task manager), and the laptop gets a bit hot... not as hot as when playing Civ 4, but still...

Any ideas?

Thanks

Try installing MS Virtual PC (pc emulator). Free tryout version is downloadable from MicroSoft.
You will also need a copy of DOS.

Then you will be able to install this game into the emulated environment.

An alternative method is to use the WinCiv1, a windows port of Civ1, though I dont know where you can get THAT one.

Describe the problems you have running CivDOS in Win XP. I only encountered one problem and it was easy to fix.
