downloading patches

i have civ 4 gold edition, the base game with the warlords expansion pack, whenever i try to install a downloaded patch my computer says that i do not have warlords installed. i checked what my game offers and it is the warlords edition, the program files agree it is civ 4 warlords, the icon for the game says civ iv warlords, could some one please help me since i am very disappointed with civ v and prefere to play civ iv which is superior.

Where did you get your CivGold version from?
If it was from an online retailer like Steam or Direct2Drive, then you have to look at their websites for a customized patch, because these version are not compatible to the normal one.
