DA2 is terrible, I recommend that anything thinking of purchasing it save their money instead. There are better RPGs out there, be they old, current, or upcoming. I recommend The Witcher 2!
The following has some very generic potential spoilers.
The main problem with DA2 is... the, what, one-year development cycle it had. The game is repetitious, entirely linear, and it recycles content in an unrepentant manner. DA2 is a game so abhorrent that I refuse to buy anything related to DA now.
Unfortunately I still like the other things Bioware is developing, ME3/TOR.
All of the features the game has are a letdown.
-
Awesome combat! Looks pretty, but it is horribly repetitious. Tactics were abandoned in favour of flashy spectacle.
-
Next-Gen graphics! 75% of which are recycled from other parts of the game. Also, don't look at anyone's polygon ears or 80-year-old hands.
-
10 Year Story! If they didn't mention time had passed, you would never know. The passage of time changes nothing, and I think the last 3 years of timeskip are from the end-game (defeating the final boss) to the ending (epilogue). Regarding the ending: *non-specific spoilers*
*endspoilers*

Import your DAO decisions! Most of them are not correct, broken, or absent entirely, though!
-
Flemeth! I'll tell you now: she's not featured in the game at all. I think they're setting up part of DA3.
-
A real protagonist! Yes, Hawke is voiced and has a family. No, Hawke's family plays no role in the plot whatsoever. It's an extended origin from DAO, basically.
-
Complex, dynamic setting! Kirkwall barely changes throughout the course of the game. Vendors stay in the same spot, the same people patrol in the same places (even audacious enough to walk through battles in progress), and loot you have yet to pick up will sit there until you grab it.
-
Realistic, gritty characters! There is no good or evil! Templars are controlling tyrants, Mages are power-hungry and naieve. Both groups are evil!
-
40 hours of gameplay! Yes, it it took me a while (~40 hrs) to complete my playthrough. Unfortunately, only the final act is part of the main plot. And the final act is, by far, the worst, most incoherent part of the game. The motives of characters becomes less coherent as the game progresses.
-
You are the Champion of Kirkwall! Don't duel anyone 1v1 in the game, ever. You may become champion because of it, but it will take you an hour of kiting and slowly whittling down the enemy's health, even on the lowest difficulty setting.
-
Streamlined! There is a junk item category. The only purpose these items serve is to sell them to vendors for money. Why not simply pick up money instead of these items? Well, no one wants a dumbed-down game.
-
You are a legend! Your personal bard, Varric, narrates your actions to another character. The only purpose of this is to establish two instances where Varric lies about what happened and to establish the ten year story.
-
Rivalry and Friendship! A.K.A. the Approval System from DAO.
There is more wrong with the game, but I either can't think of it or don't care to mention it. There is one good aspect to it: the development it has for the Qunari. That is it.
I hope this post saves at least a few people from buying DA2.
