I have two computers, one with internet and one with civ. I need to transfer all my files via erase and burning a disc, which is time consuming and difficult. Then I thought of using one of those chip thingies, that you can plug into the back of your computer? Does anyone know what I'm talking about? THe problem is the civ computer is a windows ME (old kind) and the internet compy is brand new. Will them windows ME be able to use this device?

Yes, all Windows OSes after 2000 support USB disks (that's what I call them; don't know what other people call them), which includes ME. And such devices usually come with a CD to install the driver needed to use it. If they don't you can always download one from the manufacturer's webpage. But since you use ME that's not a problem. So yes, you can just plug it in and it will work on your ME comp.

Another question is why you use ME, but that's not covered by this thread.

There are many things you can plug into the back of your PC ;).

And most things will be compatible, it is still windows :).

(Not everything though).

Oh, you mean an external hard-drive?

I used to have Me, that was horrible, so much stuff wasn't compatible.

O don't know why we didn't have 2000 though, when was that released?

Are you talking about a USB Flash Drive?

I have used them - plug them into your USB port at the front/back of the computer, drag your files onto it (via My Computer; mine is F: drive), take it out, plug it into your other computer, and open it and drag saves to the Saves folder. Quick and easy - no burning required, and you can get them for cheap.

You can get a 128 MB one for $25 at Staples. (I found at 64 MB one at Amazon.com for $14). Check them out, they are rather inexpensive yet useful.

AFAIK you will need drivers for most flash drives under 98/ME. In anything newer than 2000 though he should pick it up as soon as you plug it in.

Btw, the assigned drive letter just depends on what other drives you have. You can actually assign it to any letter you desire except A, B or C.

512MB for $30 (after rebates of course) at Best Buy around here.

A friend of mine used to run ME, and we had no problems connecting USB Flash Drives (that's the word I was looking for) to it, even without drivers. I've only had to install drivers for such things on my old 98 laptop. And even if your ME comp doesn't recognize the drive, the 98 drivers should work on ME as well.

Flash drives are rather awsome. I've bought three of them myself. Sold off the first two after I got a 1GB model.

Yep that's it. Thanks guys :) .

After you finish coping files, look at the lower right corner of your taskbar... there'll be an icon for Plug-n-Play devices (default one looks like a grey rectangle with a green arrow on top pointing to the left).

Right click on it (or left click to open a dialog). It will list the Plug-n-Play devices connected. One of them would be called "USB Mass Storage Device (X: )" where X is the drive letter of your Flash disk. left/right Click on it and stop it.

You will get a dialog telling you that it is now safe to remove your device then.

If you do not do this, there's a chance that the file system on your Flash disk would be corrupted (and require a reformat).

pssssst.. u can do this with an IPOD aswell.. I use it to transfer 4 and 5 Gig files all the time.

no. its data. dont treat it as a music player, just a mass storage device.

Well, Flash Drives also go over 1Gb these days... if you often have that much data to transfer, it might be easier to buy two cheap network cards (and perhaps a hub/router instead of direct cable) and setup a local network instead. :)

Flash drives up to 4GB are available, if you're willing to pay..

Most comps made in the last 2-3 years should have an integrated NIC, otherwise you can buy them for about $20. If you don't have a router or switch, you'll need a crossover cable. Just be sure you buy it online from some place like newegg instead of from a retail store.. they rape you on the price. Or if you have a friend who does networking ask them to make you a crossover cable, they're mind numbingly easy to make.
