It is hard to do this when there are some sounds in english that we do not have proper letters to distinguish, like the english R as opposed to the manly hard rolling R, or the annoying th- sound that I had to use the Icelandic letters eth and thorn just to be able to write them. I think the english language and alphabet sucks.

Edit: Translation to "proper" english added. Some bad grammar in my original post, but I can't be bothered to fix it now.

Interesting histori-linguistic fact: the word ye came about from y being substituted for þ (soft th) during the advent of printed type. Of course, everyone knew that you were supposed to pronounce it as if it were 'th', but over time, people forgot and that's why we have seemingly arcane signs such as "Ye Olde Shoppe". (In an identical fashion, that's how we have American English spellings, mainly because Noah Webster overestimated his fellow countrymen's ability to pronounce "simplified" English spellings.)
