Thats a good point. After the cities grow a bit, I check if there can be any optimization only when the city is 2-3 away from growing and 2-3 away of finishing the production task, there you can do some tweaking for better results.

Thats especially important for cities with bad production, where every hammer counts :)
Having a 18 size city, that needs 23 turns to build Research Lab ain't very funny ...
 
I thought this post would touch on worker micro where you prebuild improvements while moving to not waste worker turns (also to save maintenance on roads f.e.) which is also worthwhile imo although I see some deity let's play personalities not use it at all. Of course if you're good enough at the game you can win 99% of all deity games with casual micro so yeah..
