So I've been diving back into Civ6 with the "quar" looming over my non-existant social life.

I haven't really played as much with the more recent changes to how resource management and units is concerned. I'm good enough to be able to (slowly) win 6-8 player games on pangea, standard speed, deity (usually via domination or science) but I've been playing against my friends more recently and I'm trying to optimize my unit upgrades. It seems like having a good mix of units (feels like you need siege weapons now whereas before you could just get away with mass units etc.), a great general or two, and support units are the way to go.

The problems I keep running into are initial shortages of resources (not enough oil/aluminum/nitre spawns), not having enough money/resources to upgrade quickly which usually destroys my plans as far as beelining certain techs and getting units ahead of time... which in turn makes my conquests slower or just doesn't allow me to take advantage of opportunities here and there.

It seems like having units from an era ahead is just so powerful and you need to be able to quickly take cities or else you get hammered by loyalty problems.

So I'm just wondering what everyone's focus points are in the tech tree to be able to make sure you secure your resources and have enough by the time you complete your tech tree to the unit that you want? Also wondering about tactics to attain extra resources to be able to keep up with army size and upgrades? Curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

@KaleTime

This is actually the thread for Single Player Strategy.
It sounds to me like you are asking for Multi Player Strategy.
I have played thousands of hours of both.
Completely different experience or animal.
Usually MP is played on Quick Speed so you have to adjust for that.
MP is a biased game as one or two people will spawn in the best locations.
Sometimes you will spawn all alone while 5 other people spawn on top of each other.
You also have to work against the people who are working together.
So if you can, try to team up with someone sending trade routes to each other and such.
So many little glitches and bugs in MP you never know what someone else is doing in the way of abuse.
All this being said you still can get the advantage or initiative depending on the skill level of your opponents.
If your opponents aren't very well versed you could easily chop out an army and crush your neighbor.
Usually if you crush one neighbor you can snowball into MP Victory.
You could also snowball off of rolling CS's.
The usual suspects apply...
Usually you want to Beeline Bronze Working and Animal Husbandry to see where the Iron and Horses are.
It is a speed rush to claim the land so you need to get a settler or two out.
You can really snowball off a 3 City Triangle Strategy.
Encampment is more important in MP IMO.
So this means the Civ you are playing is very important as the game could be decided just from picking Civs.
Great Generals are huge in MP so like if Japan is your neighbor you could be in big trouble.
Not that Japan is the best but some serious strategies are focused around Japan in MP.
I guess the same could be said for America and others.
Some Civs are actually banned in No Quit Leagues so that should tell you how powerful a Civ is.
As usual it is all land and map dependant.
MP is more brutal in that you can not play peaceful.
It all boils down to who has the Iron, Horses or Niter if you make it that far.
Forget Wonders as they are useless.
The game is usually over by turn 100 as you can see a clear winner.
I probably haven't given you specific answers to your question.
The point is the game is basically a speed rush and the one who knows how to abuse the game more wins.
Diplomacy is real though in MP unlike Single Player.
So many crazy things two people can do in the trade screen with each other.
I'm sure you and your friends are playing more social though.
Most likely you only need to claim land fast, find the resources and crush.
If you are playing with CS's it will make all the difference who finds what first.
@Tabarnak has some good early build strategies for MP.
Try to just have fun though because the game can get very annoying or serious in MP.
Probably not your situation but nothing is worse than playing MP all day and everyone quitting on you before turn 30.
