Last time we saw Otto von Bismarck as he crushed a few minor barbarian tribes to secure his borders and expand the German Empire. Let's see how he fares against bigger foes - other nations!
"1630 AD: The first stage of my plan to isolate the French has started: I have sent boatloads of fanatical Hindus to the shores of the Eastern Continent in the hope that they will convert the Chinese natives.
Both the Chinese and the French seem to believe in a heathen religion called "Buddhism", which they have elevated to the status of a state religion. But if I can convince enough of them to convert to Hinduism, the Chinese (and eventually, the other civilizations) might be less friendly from the French. The Chinese city of Xian is the first to accept the Hindus. I hope it won't be the last.
Too bad I don't have a direct rail line to the Chinese capital. That would make things a lot easier...
1725 AD: Another Asiatic palace complex, this one called "Taj Mahal" and located in Hamburg. Lots of people have proclaimed it to be one of the "Wonders of the World", and many Germans are feeling proud that their nation is capable of building something like this. Some even claim that a "Golden Age" has started for Germany.
And I must admit, it makes for a nice residence. Let the Emperor have Berlin, with all its artists and other lunatics! Hamburg is much more to my liking...
1775 AD: The invention of the railroad promises to link German cities more tightly together than ever before. I still do not have access to a large source of iron like some other nations, but I have asked the citizens to donate scrap iron, and this seems to be sufficient somehow. I certainly have enough coal to power the steam engines! I sent out some of my workers whom I discovered were doing nothing more than hanging out in Berlin and making rude comments at passersby. Building the first German rail network should keep them busy for a while.
I used this as an opportunity to have a long, hard look at the German Empire and how it needs to be organized in the future. The plan to convert other nations to Hinduism wasn't working - other religions were too firm entrenched to make it possible to establish Hinduism as a state religion over there. So I needed a different approach.
What's more the current Age of Industrialization lead to unrest among the common workers. A new movement, calling themselves "Social Democrats" has spread among them, demanding all sorts of unreasonable things. I tried to suppress them, but they were annoyingly persistent.
So I have decided to apparently give in to some of their demands while secretly making sure that I remain firmly in charge. As of now, I am committing the German Empire to Representation, Free Speech, and Free Religion.
To be certain, this will have some drawbacks. The fellow Hindus in Greece and Mongolia won't like the fact that Hinduism is no longer the state religion, and might get more hostile from now on. I can only make sure that my borders are well guarded so that I can crush them if they make any impolite moves.
But still, I was able to purge my government of most religious influences. That alone was worth it!
And I am sure that those Social Democrats won't bother me any more...
1780 AD: The gall of it! That abominable Frenchmen actually proposed an Open Borders treaty to me! What kind of fool does he think I am?
On the other hand, perhaps
he is the fool. This might be a good opportunity for me...
1790 AD: Nippon joins the list of countries I have open borders with. My charm and good looks still seem to work.
1820 AD: More fine adjustments to the form of government - I introduce Universal Suffrage, which basically means that all Germans are created equal (except for me, of course. And possibly the Emperor), and Emancipation, which will make people in all nations unhappy that don't have it. Especially the French, who will hopefully get as green with envy as the frogs they are eating.
1840 AD: Better late than never: Hinduism has become the state religion of the Chinese.
Perhaps it is possible to isolate the French after all...
1868 AD: The people of Hamburg have erected a giant statues to celebrate their "Liberties". I fear they might be going overboard with their enthusiasm...
In other news, I have come up with a new scheme. Every priest of an officially recognized religion gets a free rail ticket. I still only send Hindu priests aboard - I still have the dream of isolating the French - but within Germany, they are all encouraged to spread their beliefs to every other German city.
I have found that as long the people are busy arguing about religion, they are too busy to argue about politics - which suits me just fine. And their main temples also seem to generate lots of income from this...
1878 AD: All this experimenting with religion will have to wait for the moment. It has come as I feared - Alexander of the Greeks has declared war on Germany.
He has long resented that my borders encroached his, and Germany's move away from Hinduism probably was the last straw. Now I must be ready for the first wave. 8 Greek units, mostly Cavalry, are marching into the direction of Frankfurt.
Fortunately, I am rather fluent at the moment, and so I was able to upgrade some of the defenders to Machine Gunners, who are devastating in the defense. Still, that's a
lot of units coming this way. I hope it will be enough. Most other German cities have already shifted production to military matters...
1886 AD: The Greeks have of course failed to take one of my cities. But seeing the overwhelming firepower defending the city, they have taken to pillaging the surrounding countryside.
It will take
years until the wineries near Berlin are rebuilt. Already the public health in the German cities is suffering.
Alexander will
pay for this.
1890 AD: I manage to crush the first wave near Berlin, but 15 units of the enemy remain within or near my borders.
What would von Clausewitz do in this situation?
1896 AD: My domestic advisers are useless. They keep on insisting that we should concentrate on purely civilian projects instead of supporting the military. Don't they see that this is not a time to build temples, it is a time to build guns?
Lots and
lots of guns!
I am pleased to see that my men are giving better than they are taking. Medals all around. Still, those "Greek Waves" keep on coming.
When will it end?
1898 AD: It seems like the enemy will soon be able to cut support lines to the northern outpost of Essen. And since my attention was occupied elsewhere, there was nothing I could do about it.
Verdammnt.
I had to concentrate on an epic battle near Hamburg. I won, but suffered heavy losses, and the survivors will take a long time to recover from their injuries. In the end, I even had to reactivate an old unit of Longbowmen stationed in Hamburg which I mostly kept for ceremonial purposes to cut down the last remaining, wounded enemy Riflemen. I wonder how that will go down into the history books?
On the bright side, the Greeks have ravaged our rice fields, so I can finally get off this rice diet. And even better, the Berliner pig farms have survived unscathed so far...
1904 AD: As predicted, the Greeks have cut off Essen. They then attempted to assault the city itself, but were forced to withdraw under heavy machine gun fire, and then withdrew to the Southwest.
In the meantime, I had one of my new Riflemen train as
Jäger (forest fighters, in case you had forgotten) and stationed them into the jungle near the invaders.
And it paid off! Using the jungle cover and their training to excellent advantage, they defended themselves against two units of Greek Riflemen! The injured Cavalry units withdrew further to the South to ravage the towns surrounding Cologne as their final, defiant act. They shall be easy pickings for fresh German units coming in from the South.
1906 AD: I paid the Krupp factories in Berlin and Hamburg a generous bonus for extra fast delivery of our brand new Artillery units, and I think it will be well worth it. With these, I feel finally confident enough to take the fight to the enemy and assault the Greek city of Pharsalos!
1908 AD: Despite a hastily sent Cavalry unit to shore up the defenses of the city, Pharsalos is still only weakly defended. Apart from the Cavalry, it has only one unit each of Riflemen, Pikemen, and Archers.
Arrayed against them stand two Artillery, two Grenadiers, and four Riflemen. A Machine Gun unit also stands ready - they cannot attack, but I want them to defend the city once it is ours.
Damnation! How could this be? The defenders have proven more persistent than it could be imagined! They are reduced to a few, scattered men, but the city still stands!
And I fear that they will be able to send more troops to Pharsalos soon. This calls for drastic measures - I have ordered almost every available unit to the city, even if it does mean my defenses are severely reduced elsewhere.
I have also ordered a "No Retreat" policy - any of my own troops who attempt to flee shall be shot for cowardice! This is the battle that shall determine the fate of our nations, and I do not care how many losses of life it will take - I
will win this battle!
1910 AD: Victory! Pharsalos is burning! The Greeks were not able to send reinforcements in time, and my units were able to defeat the remaining Riflemen without any further losses.
Maybe I was too harsh on my troops over this. Assaulting a city that has prepared strong defenses is never easy, after all. I really feared I was going over the brink for a moment...
