My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty....

Great job doing a preview for folks across the pond who have to wait.....and wait....:)

On which side of the Pond are you? I am in Germany...

It'll be cool to know what you like or don't like about is so far. Compare it to some CIV 3 features.

I like pretty much everything except for the slower game speed. I must really upgrade my computer soon...

Civ IV certainly seems harder to win. I won a few games at the "Deity" level in Civ III. Now I am struggling at "Warlord".

And if you are playing a defensive strategy, founding a religion and spreading it as far and wide as possible is vital. Your neighbors will like you much more if they are of the same faith, and even the aggressive ones might not attack you. Plus, if you get a Great Prophet and found your religion's unique building, a decent cash flow is almost guranteed.

On the flip side, the AIs can be rather ruthless. They will size up on any weakness you display, and are unlikely to start a combat they don't think they can win. So they will likely only assault your cities with strong numerical superiority. If they don't have, they will pillage the tile improvements you have built with so much effort, leading to lots of nasty effects within your cities. If you are not careful, a war can easily wreck your economy even if you don't loose any of your cities.

Last time we saw Otto von Bismarck as he crushed a few minor barbarian tribes to secure his borders and expand the German Empire. Let's see how he fares against bigger foes - other nations!

Civ01-041.JPG

"1630 AD: The first stage of my plan to isolate the French has started: I have sent boatloads of fanatical Hindus to the shores of the Eastern Continent in the hope that they will convert the Chinese natives.

Both the Chinese and the French seem to believe in a heathen religion called "Buddhism", which they have elevated to the status of a state religion. But if I can convince enough of them to convert to Hinduism, the Chinese (and eventually, the other civilizations) might be less friendly from the French. The Chinese city of Xian is the first to accept the Hindus. I hope it won't be the last.

Too bad I don't have a direct rail line to the Chinese capital. That would make things a lot easier...

1725 AD: Another Asiatic palace complex, this one called "Taj Mahal" and located in Hamburg. Lots of people have proclaimed it to be one of the "Wonders of the World", and many Germans are feeling proud that their nation is capable of building something like this. Some even claim that a "Golden Age" has started for Germany.

And I must admit, it makes for a nice residence. Let the Emperor have Berlin, with all its artists and other lunatics! Hamburg is much more to my liking...

1775 AD: The invention of the railroad promises to link German cities more tightly together than ever before. I still do not have access to a large source of iron like some other nations, but I have asked the citizens to donate scrap iron, and this seems to be sufficient somehow. I certainly have enough coal to power the steam engines! I sent out some of my workers whom I discovered were doing nothing more than hanging out in Berlin and making rude comments at passersby. Building the first German rail network should keep them busy for a while.

Civ01-042.JPG

I used this as an opportunity to have a long, hard look at the German Empire and how it needs to be organized in the future. The plan to convert other nations to Hinduism wasn't working - other religions were too firm entrenched to make it possible to establish Hinduism as a state religion over there. So I needed a different approach.

What's more the current Age of Industrialization lead to unrest among the common workers. A new movement, calling themselves "Social Democrats" has spread among them, demanding all sorts of unreasonable things. I tried to suppress them, but they were annoyingly persistent.

So I have decided to apparently give in to some of their demands while secretly making sure that I remain firmly in charge. As of now, I am committing the German Empire to Representation, Free Speech, and Free Religion.

To be certain, this will have some drawbacks. The fellow Hindus in Greece and Mongolia won't like the fact that Hinduism is no longer the state religion, and might get more hostile from now on. I can only make sure that my borders are well guarded so that I can crush them if they make any impolite moves.

But still, I was able to purge my government of most religious influences. That alone was worth it!

And I am sure that those Social Democrats won't bother me any more...

1780 AD: The gall of it! That abominable Frenchmen actually proposed an Open Borders treaty to me! What kind of fool does he think I am?

On the other hand, perhaps he is the fool. This might be a good opportunity for me...

1790 AD: Nippon joins the list of countries I have open borders with. My charm and good looks still seem to work.

1820 AD: More fine adjustments to the form of government - I introduce Universal Suffrage, which basically means that all Germans are created equal (except for me, of course. And possibly the Emperor), and Emancipation, which will make people in all nations unhappy that don't have it. Especially the French, who will hopefully get as green with envy as the frogs they are eating.

1840 AD: Better late than never: Hinduism has become the state religion of the Chinese.

Perhaps it is possible to isolate the French after all...

1868 AD: The people of Hamburg have erected a giant statues to celebrate their "Liberties". I fear they might be going overboard with their enthusiasm...

In other news, I have come up with a new scheme. Every priest of an officially recognized religion gets a free rail ticket. I still only send Hindu priests aboard - I still have the dream of isolating the French - but within Germany, they are all encouraged to spread their beliefs to every other German city.

I have found that as long the people are busy arguing about religion, they are too busy to argue about politics - which suits me just fine. And their main temples also seem to generate lots of income from this...

Civ01-043.JPG

1878 AD: All this experimenting with religion will have to wait for the moment. It has come as I feared - Alexander of the Greeks has declared war on Germany.

He has long resented that my borders encroached his, and Germany's move away from Hinduism probably was the last straw. Now I must be ready for the first wave. 8 Greek units, mostly Cavalry, are marching into the direction of Frankfurt.

Fortunately, I am rather fluent at the moment, and so I was able to upgrade some of the defenders to Machine Gunners, who are devastating in the defense. Still, that's a lot of units coming this way. I hope it will be enough. Most other German cities have already shifted production to military matters...

Civ01-044.JPG

1886 AD: The Greeks have of course failed to take one of my cities. But seeing the overwhelming firepower defending the city, they have taken to pillaging the surrounding countryside.

It will take years until the wineries near Berlin are rebuilt. Already the public health in the German cities is suffering.

Alexander will pay for this.

Civ01-045.JPG

1890 AD: I manage to crush the first wave near Berlin, but 15 units of the enemy remain within or near my borders.

What would von Clausewitz do in this situation?

1896 AD: My domestic advisers are useless. They keep on insisting that we should concentrate on purely civilian projects instead of supporting the military. Don't they see that this is not a time to build temples, it is a time to build guns?

Lots and lots of guns!

I am pleased to see that my men are giving better than they are taking. Medals all around. Still, those "Greek Waves" keep on coming.

When will it end?

1898 AD: It seems like the enemy will soon be able to cut support lines to the northern outpost of Essen. And since my attention was occupied elsewhere, there was nothing I could do about it. Verdammnt.

I had to concentrate on an epic battle near Hamburg. I won, but suffered heavy losses, and the survivors will take a long time to recover from their injuries. In the end, I even had to reactivate an old unit of Longbowmen stationed in Hamburg which I mostly kept for ceremonial purposes to cut down the last remaining, wounded enemy Riflemen. I wonder how that will go down into the history books?

On the bright side, the Greeks have ravaged our rice fields, so I can finally get off this rice diet. And even better, the Berliner pig farms have survived unscathed so far...

1904 AD: As predicted, the Greeks have cut off Essen. They then attempted to assault the city itself, but were forced to withdraw under heavy machine gun fire, and then withdrew to the Southwest.

In the meantime, I had one of my new Riflemen train as Jäger (forest fighters, in case you had forgotten) and stationed them into the jungle near the invaders.

Civ01-046.JPG

And it paid off! Using the jungle cover and their training to excellent advantage, they defended themselves against two units of Greek Riflemen! The injured Cavalry units withdrew further to the South to ravage the towns surrounding Cologne as their final, defiant act. They shall be easy pickings for fresh German units coming in from the South.

Civ01-047.JPG

1906 AD: I paid the Krupp factories in Berlin and Hamburg a generous bonus for extra fast delivery of our brand new Artillery units, and I think it will be well worth it. With these, I feel finally confident enough to take the fight to the enemy and assault the Greek city of Pharsalos!

Civ01-048.JPG

1908 AD: Despite a hastily sent Cavalry unit to shore up the defenses of the city, Pharsalos is still only weakly defended. Apart from the Cavalry, it has only one unit each of Riflemen, Pikemen, and Archers.

Arrayed against them stand two Artillery, two Grenadiers, and four Riflemen. A Machine Gun unit also stands ready - they cannot attack, but I want them to defend the city once it is ours.

Civ01-049.JPG

Damnation! How could this be? The defenders have proven more persistent than it could be imagined! They are reduced to a few, scattered men, but the city still stands!

And I fear that they will be able to send more troops to Pharsalos soon. This calls for drastic measures - I have ordered almost every available unit to the city, even if it does mean my defenses are severely reduced elsewhere.

I have also ordered a "No Retreat" policy - any of my own troops who attempt to flee shall be shot for cowardice! This is the battle that shall determine the fate of our nations, and I do not care how many losses of life it will take - I will win this battle!

Civ01-050.JPG

1910 AD: Victory! Pharsalos is burning! The Greeks were not able to send reinforcements in time, and my units were able to defeat the remaining Riflemen without any further losses.

Maybe I was too harsh on my troops over this. Assaulting a city that has prepared strong defenses is never easy, after all. I really feared I was going over the brink for a moment...

1912 AD: Alexander attempts to make peace. I think not! After all those German lives lost, I am not going to let him and his nation off the hook so easily!

1914 AD: Treachery! The Mongols declare war on me as well! Has Alexander bribed Ghengis Khan into this?

Anyway, I had better shore up my shore defenses, if you will forgive the pun. It wouldn't do if the Mongols sent a few shiploads of their uncouth warriors this way, and I did not have the proper "welcoming committee" at hand...

Civ01-051.JPG

1922 AD: The Mongols are making raids into my territory. It is the old problem: As long as they are within the forest, assaulting the enemy Cavalry units would cause unacceptable losses. In the open, they would be easy prey - but once they are there, they will be able to pillage my infrastructure before I can stop them.

For the time being, I can do nothing but ask the German people to bear it. But Genghis has made it on my List...

Civ01-052.JPG

1926 AD: More marauders have been spotted inside enemy territory, but not in numbers large enough to threaten me. I have decided to go on the offensive again - this time, the target is the Greek city of Thermophylae.

And accompanying my Artillery, Riflemen, and Grenadiers are two SAM Infantry units - soldiers who have received the first of the new Panzerfausts. I hope that these should make a suitable impression on the Greeks...

1928 AD: There has been an assault on Essen! Nothing that could breach its defenses, and the retreating Cavalry units were easily shot down by my Riflemen. Is Alexander testing my strength over there?

In other news, though I don't pay much attention to domestic matters, there seems to have been a major conference in Berlin where religious and scientific leaders worked out some major differences that had been troubling them. The newspapers are full of it - there is almost as much coverage on this as on the (good) news from the War Front. The whole nation seems to be invigorated somehow, and I am told that commerce and productivity have soared.

I knew that the German people wouldn't let me down when I needed them the most.

Civ01-053.JPG

1930 AD: Nicht gut. Though the defenders of Thermophylae were severely weakened, I suffered heavy losses, and I have my doubts if I can take the city now. Perhaps I should have waited until a few of the new Infantry units could be sent over to the siege...

Civ01-054.JPG

1932 AD: Success! But it was a close thing - too close. My artillery units first destroyed the strongest remaining defenders, allowing my two remaining Riflemen to take on the other two units. They defeated them, but so far, only one wounded Rifleman unit is occupying the city. I hope that the Greeks or Mongols don't launch an assault until I can move the other units in...

1934 AD: It is as I feared - the Greeks have retaken Thermophylae, and my remaining forces have proven too weak to occupy it once again. I need to wait for reinforcements, but I don't have many to spare yet...

Civ01-055.JPG

1936 AD: Betrayal! There is Social Democratic Agitation among the dock workers in several of my cities! Stab me in the back, will they?

If this continues for much longer, I will have to sue for an ignominious peace...

1938 AD: I made peace. There was too much chaos and rioting in my own cities to continue like this, and the defenses of Thermophylae were too well defended to make taking it a realistic option in the near term. The peace treaty, which will last for a few years, allowed me to withdraw my remaining units from Greek territory without further losses. Too many good German soldiers have died there already - I shouldn't throw these away, to.

I made a separate peace with the Mongols which they accepted without any complaints. Presumably they have gotten a good look at our latest advances in the fields of military science. I hope I never see their smelly faces again near my territory.

Long years of fighting, and what do I have to show for it? One new city and some paltry war reparations I have bargained from the Greek which in no way make up for the infrastructure they have destroyed. I desperately need to rebuild now.

And in a few years, we shall see...

1940 AD: I am realizing that the war has caused me setbacks on the technology front - both the Russians and the Chinese offered me the secret of a new substance they call "Plastics". I refused because their demands were wholly unreasonable, but have ordered my scientists to research this substance as soon as possible.

1951 AD: I have been told that Berlin's Breite Strasse has become an internationally renowned center for the performing arts, and is producing hit musicals.

I don't really get these things. Give me some good, old fashioned military music and parades any day. But maybe we can peddle them to some gullible foreigners...

Civ01-056.JPG

1958 AD: My scientists have created the first prototype of a devastating new weapon: The Panzer!

This armored vehicle should be able to outflank and outfight anything my enemies might throw at me...

In other news, I have ordered to start an ambitious new program in Cologne: To put the first man on the moon! If our efforts will pay off, we should be able to pull this feat off somewhere near the end of the next decade...

The propaganda value alone would be invaluable.

Civ01-057.JPG

1959 AD: What I have long expected finally came true: The French have declared war on me. A small fleet of their vessels have been spotted on our Western coast.

I guess I crumpled up the tribute demands and threw it into the French ambassador's face one time too many...

Civ01-058.JPG

1960 AD: Sweet Sauerkraut! The grand "Invasion Force" the French landed on my shores consisted of one unit of Grenadiers... and two units of Chariots! I don't know whether to feel insulted or amused.

The pictures of my Panzers crushing the fleeing Chariots under their tracks have gone over well in the newspapers. I really must fill a transport or two with Panzers and send it over to the French; I am sure they will surrender before the German might in no time.

In other news, because my cities suffered under persistent health problem during the last war, I imposed a strict environmental regime on all my cities. Every effort is being made to make Germany as green, efficient, and healthy as possible. I don't want to be caught my large-scale diseases again.

Civ01-059.JPG

1961 AD: One of my Destroyers pursued the fleeing French Galleon that had transported this "Invasion Force" to my shores, and managed to sink its Destroyer escort. Now the Galleon is easy prey, and the Emperor is happier than he has been in a long time.

I must say, those warships of his have a certain appeal. He wants me to build a bigger one, and I am giving this serious consideration...

1962 AD: I discover to my shock that apparently the Russians have already put someone on the moon! What's more, they have apparently started to build something rather large in Earth Orbit.

This development disturbs me. The ultimate high ground must belong to me!

Civ01-060.JPG

1968 AD: Another French invasion force landed. This one was larger, but I still defeated them without any serious losses (though I made note that the French do have access to Infantry units - taking one of their cities might be harder than I thought) - but unfortunately not before they could ravage some local towns and villages.

And my strike force cannot set sail yet because I have not been able to find France! I didn't take exploration of the world's oceans as seriously as I should have. But in a few years, I will have another method of finding those damnable French..."

Will Bismarck find France, and what will he do about it once he finds it? Will he have to cede the ultimate high ground to the Russians? And when will Germany finally start a World War?

Possible answers might be forthcoming in the next installment. But maybe there will only be more confusion...

Not sure if this is good or bad. It is good in that its a very good story, I really like the style and the pictures, but the bad part is that I *still* don't have Civ IV and this is only making me more impatient. :( ;)

Either way, good work, I hope to read more of this tommorow. Its rather disappointing to hear that the A.I. still does occasionally use chariots and the like. Hopefully the spearmen won't stop your eventual blitzkrieg against France.

Very good work, I am acpecting my own civ IV in the weekend untill then I am reading about the game and are studding the stategies of others. You have realy helped me with such a good discription of your Reich and i realy enjoy reading it, sice you wrote it very GOOD, keep on doing so I would love to read more, and do me a favor, crush all those frenchie French!
