Preturn: We were strong vs the Brittish and still struggled with WW. We are only average to the Berber so likely I won't try to go to war my turn. Builds look fine.
IBT: Berber landed units next to one of our cities. In the IBT I switched some builds to Knights in case it means war.
Spain and Berber are at war now which is good for us.
1380 AD: Settler in the Berber stack with def 2 units. Decide to take the chance of weakening Berber by trying to kill the two guards. We lose 1 Missionary, but gain 2 Monks and a Worker. Use one monk in Koenigsburg because it has 2 Berber Neighbors, so a higher culture seems worth while. Berlin is in a direct Culture race with Leipzig (1 square overlap in workable squares) so use the other monk there which puts us ahead (we own the square). Will rush culture buildings to keep it that way.
Make trades for Naval Guns to get our gpt ~200 -> 922. For Sweden, I also traded a bunch of resources as well to get 581 gpt. They had 902 gpt avail if we were willing to trade Physics.
Rushed some Universities including our capital.
IBT: Utica(Berber) completes Holy City.
An Xbow type unit is killed and a worker flees.
1390 AD: Capture worker that fled. It is a non-foreign worker so worth the loss of the xbow. Kill invisble unit responsible.
We can't get Clockwork in 1 so lower science to 30%.
1400 AD: Embassies for all civs so we know all the capitals.
1410 AD: Ballistics in 4 at 100% science for 5 attack (Joe mixed the b techs above). Going to try to maintain this, but requires more happy buildings and Entertainers for now.
1420 AD: Rushed a bunch. Most entertainers dealt with.
1430 AD: Rushing town clock in NY in the hopes it will be a turn sooner if shields is over 80 (74 now).
Met Arabia and traded Chivalry for Dye. We can trade Clockwork and Physics now. AI know Medicine and exploration separately
Not sure I remember Oceania either but nothing to trade there.
Trading time:
From Lowlands: Exploration and 1024 gold for Clockworks and Physics
From Berber: Medicine and 16310 gold for Clockworks Physics, Exploration.
From Sweden: 2982 gold and 456 gpt for Exploration and Physics
From Spain: 5662 gold and 331 gpt for Clockworks Physics, Exploration.
So the 3 of the 4 civs above are at tech parity. We still have Clockworks for Sweden.
Also traded Naval guns and lesser tech for a bit more gold.
Science at 80%. Get embassies. Oceania up ahead for one of our boats.
1440 AD: Rush some more Uni's in cities with decent science to keep up the 'tech every 4 turns'.
1450 AD: Upgrade both Defenders and Knights. I didn't notice the defenders earlier.
Start Juriprudence for Lawyers next.
1460 AD: Built Los Angeles in the spot mentioned by Lee.
1470 AD: We could trade for Spices with Japan. Instead I rushed an academy in Los Angeles to get Spices in 3 after border expansion.
Have been starting the replacement of Granary with Hospitals. Did not sell Granaries. I think we want to keep Temples even after they expire for the culture. At least that is how the wonders work.
Notes:
Didn't want to trade away Ballistics and give the Berber better attack units. We could keep an eye on the price they will pay to trade it before the AI gets it.
The yellow circle looks best to me.
These are both to grab the furs and to keep the AI from placing cities close to our important cities. Yellow now and red before the AI starts using boats to settle elsewhere. Both these cities become better with Dockyards for shields and planting of forests so worth starting. Red maybe in 3-4 settlers?
Concentrated on 4 turn tech over unit production. Soon our towns will have only units to produce and we will naturally become strong vs Berber. A initial limited war to weaken Berber is also reasonable - Berber is likely still at war with Spain (I don't remember peace treaty) so we could grab some cities and make peace when they respond strongly.
