I just got emancipation and it says that all other civs get

at the time I (America) was spreaing my state religion founded in Boston, Christianity, to India and Arabia.

I got India to convert, then they left, then re-converted and I was spreading in Arabia to about 1/2 his cities already.

Then I sent one to Mecca and some other Arabian city and it says I cannot spread my non-state religion now. Christianity is definitly my state religoin and I hvae been spreading it the whole game.

I wasted two missionaries apparently.

What should I do? is this because of emancipation?

If a civilization adopt Theocracy you can only spread that civilization's religion in their cities eg you cannot spread religion B,C,D if their state religion is religion A. As for Emancipation it caused citizens in other civilizations to demand for emancipation.

Interresting. But you can spread B,C,D in your cities, even when you have A and theocracy, right?

Not if A is your state religion.

Theocracy = no non-state religion spread in your cities.

Nope Felvance, they've changed it - I remember at first it worked like you said, but it's different now. Under Theocracy, the automatic religion spread can only spread your state religion, and other people's missionaries can only spread your state religion, but you can use missionaries to spread any religion. This is very nice, since I'll often want multiple religions in science cities for monastaries and don't want to switch civics from my usual Hereditary-Beurocracy-Slavery-None-Theocracy combo.

You mean that you can now build missionaries if you have the appropriate monestaries and spread any religion in your land if you are under Theocracy? How'd I ever miss that change? This makes Theocracy a lot more usable for my usual style of play!

So in my case, that means Saladin has adopted Theocracy and his state religoin is Judiasm....so that means I cannot spread Christianity in his cities?

Correct? I should be able to spread it elsewhere though right?

yes, theocracy mean that no one else can spread non his state religion into his city. You can do what ever you like with your cities, theocracy or not.
Yes, you should be able to spread to other leaders if they do not run theocracy. You can check what religious civic they run in diplomacy window.
Small icons on top will tell you.
