Embassies. What ? Why ? When ?

okay, thanks for the help... now for another, slightly OT question: how come i read everywhere that people get stunning amounts of gpt in trade with the AI ? my AI NEVER seem ready to accept any gpt deal. only ONCE did i get one (10 gpt/t). i play as regent currently, and my games hardly ever go past 1000 AD... is that the reason ? (the AI doesn't have a strong economy at this point ?)

One more thing on embassies: does the embassy affect the accuracy of information from the foreign and military advisors? I assume it does, but I haven't checked to be sure. I like to know what government the civ is running.

I'm sure others have better info, but I've come to the conclusion that if you ask for 1gpt for something and get the advisor saying "They would never accept such a deal" it means that they are researching at max and have no gpt to trade. I think you're right that you're finishing games before their economy starts generating a surplus.

Yes, it does. You can also pull off spying missions that further improve the intel that you get from your advisors.

Anyone know if you can place a spy without having an embassy first?

Thanks, Blackbird. I thought you couldn't, but by the time I get Espionage, my embassies are all long-established.

I'm a big proponent of information -- gotta have it. Embassies not only give you all kinds of information, they also give you abilities. I often divert some research early to gather the funds to put up embassies with all of my neighbors. Usually, the earlier the better. A rich AI will sometimes do it for you, but it's not worth waiting for that to happen.
