I thought this game I just started had a pretty epic start that I felt like sharing ;-)

I attached the saved game for anyone who wants to play along!

Game details:

Map size: standard, 7 AI players, 10 city-states. I am playing as Egypt.
Map type: Terra, Cultural/Domination/Science victory types enabled
King difficulty, all other options are default

As you can see by the picture, not only did I start by a river, but I started by a coast with fish and three whales. Incense is right near by, with ivory and wine to the left and right. On top of that though, my first Ancient Ruins was a population growth, and my second was free technology of Writing. That's an incredible leap, saving me many turns.

I'm not yet sure what victory type I'm going for here. If I built another city on the left coast (upper left), I could get two more whales and easy access to that Ivory.

Very nice; build a Seaport and you'll have a nice production city going, and those river plains are well worth improving (probably Posts, since the fish can feed it, esp. after a Lighthouse).

Pity about that possibly huge desert to the north, though.

I'll post a follow up screenshot once I explore more. I'm tackling exploration with both scouts and warriors as there is next to no threat from barbarians (they aren't turn off, but I've only found one barbarian settlement so far to the far upper left, near some city state -- it's cultured, but I may be able to score alliance once they ask for it to be cleared). The desert so far ends pretty quickly, with a river and dyes and grassland further north.

So I used the free Writing to research Sailing before going into Philosophy. Purchased a Work Boat, set it up on the whales, and traded whales for 248 + 1GPT/30 turns.

Pretty funny game. Everyone has been making pacts left and right with every one else and then making peace after it goes nowhere. Persia to my right got upset when I settled a city in the mountains, then the next turn declared war on me. I trampled all over him and he offered me all his GPT and some luxuries, I accepted. I don't think I'm at war with anyone at the moment, but a lot of peace treaties have ended recently -- notably the one with Persia. And I had some extra gold lying around, so I decided to have some fun with the AI...

Yeah, Persia was taking Immortals and Settlers to make a new city. I decided to buy all the land around the units. I never grant open borders to AI, so he won't be able to get out unless he declares war.

Edit: my culture spread and picked up the land he was standing on, booting his units out ;-/

:D That's hilarious.
