er1-Vanilla Civ3 1.29f Monarch

@Eric

I usually go warrior, rax, settler, war, war, settler...etc for 2nd or 3rd city. I war alot so vets mean alot to me....but this is a team effort so let me know what is the general consensus.

Oh, and consider this a GOT IT!! I will play once I'm off from work today.

Most of the time if its a good shield producing town(looks like it will be my military factory) & its my 2nd town: I go warrior, temple, worker/settler(to reduce the population that was build up during the temple build & keep the lux slider down), barracks, settler/worker(same reason), then start pumping out nothing but MUs.

I wouldn't build so many military units yet. It's the expansion phase, so we should expand.

City 1: Settler, warrior, settler, warrior ,...
City 2: Warior, (if needed granary or another warrior), worker, worker, worker, worker,
City 3: Warrior, (if needed granary) , settler, warrior, settler,

With cities 1 and 3 squeeze in a worker if possible and city 2 if it grows fast enough some unprotected settlers.

Yeah, going for mapmaking would probably be wise. I would go ahead and get IW first since we've spent a few turns researching it. It would be handy to get iron hooked up soon in case we decide to prune Mao's empire some.

edit - Rik I didn't notice before that you're from Nijmegen. I visited there once when I was in the army. They had a long-distance marching contest between many different countries there.

PT:
Nothing to trade
IW in 12.
No MM possible

1T:
Open more fog
Worker start road towards new town
MM to remove extra war without having riot

2T:
Open 1st horse resource (SW of Kyoto)
Kyoto: set > set
No trade still (unless you guys want 3gp for CB, I don't think so)
Chinese has already traded with others for TW

3T:
Warning "You are going bankrupt!!!"
I will try to continue research without filing bankrupcy

4T:
Open more fog

5T:
Osaka(green city) founded > war
Open more fog ....Hmm west is coast, ivory luxury found very south

6T:
Top is also coast??? Can see a little of American border in the north (Chinese is pink, so Am is light blue)
Contact with Zulu sct in the south

7T:
Max research complete @5T
0.10.0

8T:
Open more fog

9T:
Kyoto set > tem (can veto)
I intend to take the blue city next as it's the nearest to the horse resource; not that we are in any rush to get it.
I see bar in the south, war is already elite but not healed so i evade. Chinese are in the south!!!!
Look at how far we are from them. we have a very good start, the penisula is pretty much ours.

They do it every year. It's a great happening. The people who walk (50 kilometers every day) walk for 4 consecutive days.

I only do the evening part; the 8 days of parties with all pubs open till late, many podia on which national and international bands and singers perform and many other things. On the final day there are over 1 million people in the city (150.000 inhabitants). Great fun.

I got it, I'll play tomorrow night. I can't believe how much land we have to ourselves. I don't know if we could get enough warriors to the penninsula to block it off, but I think maybe we should settle to the south before the north in order to claim as much as we can. The only thing that would be a drag is if the americans settle in the north.

I'd like everyone's opinions before I play though.

America is in the north but separated by the sea. They will need mapmaking before they can steal our potential land

I had some time so here is a screenshot of our current position with Bugsy's proposed dotmap. There is a settler heading towards blue dot. I will likely build a couple more warriors in Osaka to clear more of the fog of barbs. I wonder what everyone's suggestions are now that we know more of our situation.

Eric2075-UP!
Rik-On deck.

I'd veto the temple in Kyto, if you want the pop to go up before the next settler build a spearman or 2 warriors.

I'd also build a temple in Osaka after the warrior, then maybe a worker or two, then barracks & a bunch of MUs.

Preturn - Change build in Kyoto from temple to warrior

Turn 1, 2190 BC - Osaka warrior > warrior
new warrior from Osaka moves SE, move warrior on furs NW
warrior near horse stands there and heals, southern warrior goes north

Turn 2, 2150 BC - Osaka warrior moves SE, worker completes mine and goes south
fur warrior moves NW to mountain, horse warrior moves NE
southern warrior moves north to evade barb

IBT - We know Iron Working, researching Alphabet due in 23 turns at 70% +1 gpt

Turn 3, 2110 BC - Kyoto builds warrior > warrior due in 2, Kyoto is at pop 2 grows in 5
Settler moves to blue dot, must have been on goto command before
worker builds road to connect Kyoto, Osaka warrior continues SE
fur warrior fortifies, Kyoto warrior moves 2 spaces NE, Mtn Warrior fortifies
forgot to mention there is iron on hill adjacent to red dot
also iron 3 spaces south of plains cow, southern warrior continues N

Turn 4, 2070 BC - Warrior continues N, can't shake barb, Tokyo founded > barracks
warrior clears fog NE of Kyoto, Mao will give us Masonry and Warrior code for
CB, IW and 3 gold, we are only up IW with Shaka. I never know what to do here.
Since IW is so important I don't trade. Osaka warrior SE, chinese warrior nearby.

Turn 5, 2030 BC - Kyoto completes warrior > settler, warrior moves 2 spaces E
Tundra warrior moves N, Osaka warrior NE, southern warrior continues N

Turn 6, 1990 BC - Tundra warrior ambushed by barb and he survives with 2 HP.
didn't see that barb coming at all
I'm not used to animate enemy moves being turned off, if that's what it is
that seems weird. Osaka warrior > temple, fortify new warrior
Worker moves to BG near Osaka, Kyoto's newest warrior moves E
Tundra warrior fortifies to heal, knowing there's a barb camp in that
corner somewhere. other warrior moves near grapes to clear some fog there
Southern warrior continues N. Don't remember if this was mentioned, but China has
horses connected

Turn 7, 1950 BC - tundra warrior is healed and moves into forest, Sees barb camp on
coast. Warrior moves to iron. Worker begins mining. Grape warrior clears dark spot.
Southern warrior N.

Turn 8, 1910 BC - Southern warrior N as always. Kyoto is at pop 3. All 3 are content.
Settler due in 2, town grows in 5. Grape warrior S. Iron warrior fortifies. Tundra
warrior fortifies in forest.

Turn 9, 1870 BC - Tundra warrior was apparently attacked by a barb, no damage, now
a veteren. Grape warrior NE. Southern warrior NE, zulu scout directly north. It would
be cool if the barb killed the scout soon, jungle an hills so only 1 movement for that
scout.

Turn 10, 1830 BC - Kyoto completes settler > barracks. Move settler towards Osaka.
Hope that's alright. Unfortunately it has to cross the river first so the road
doesn't help. Grape warrior fortifies. Southern warrior now has a barb SW and NE,
not looking good for him. I move him to hill and hope for the best (not likely). I hope you guys are somewhat ok with what I did.

We have 1 more city and 1 more settler.

Sir Bugsy - on deck

Feel free to veto my builds as you see fit. I was thinking of sending the settler somewhere SE of Osaka. I don't know how long it will take Mao to send settlers north.

Let me give you some comments on what I would do differently:
  1. you need more workers really soon
  2. I do not build temples this early in the game; on monarch you have 2 content citizens, 2 more controllable by warrior mp, 1 more by 10%lux. The turn you grow to size 6, produce settler/worker!
  3. tundra warrior should attack barb camp; being fortified is pointless.
  4. NW warrior should move NW to explore; you will see something!
  5. iron warrior : what is he doing? let him explore south also. You need to find the Zulu.
  6. SE warrior should cover as much as possible of the other landmass to make possible contact; better yet: let him go S and the iron warrior do the watching
[/list=1]It is a matter of personal style, but I would rex first w granaries instead of building barracks/temples.

The settler should grap the horses.

    Feel free to ignore. ;)

    Edit: some expansion of arguments.

First off change the preferances: color shields ON, animate attacks/friends/enemys/our moves ON(its not late in the game this won't delay your comp more then 15 secs & it's more then crucial to know!). & last but not least show wonder pop up on.

My feelings on the game: Both cities(not Kyoto) need at temple shortly to expand(shortly being the key word... not now). Normally I'm all about the temples, ask anyone thats played a SG with me before(expand our culture, give each town better terrain, yadda yadda), but right now we have bigger problems.

We have one worker & 8 warriors! To make matters worse we aren't even industius. We have 5 warriors fortified not doing anything(I'm not counting our MP, the 1 forted next to the barbs, or the 1 exploring). Osaka which is the only town with2 pop in it (can't pull a worker IMHO), because it needs a temple more then either of the other towns(to get the wines under our control).

We need workers bad! My vote goes to changing Tokyo to a worker(yes I know it will waste 2 sheilds). Kyoto hmmmmmm tough call. It needs something but not a barracks(again IMHO), a spearman maybe a warrior even, but that city needs to be producing settler, settler, settler, ect..... well you get the point. We need to expand fast! We're on a penisula with 1 civ below us threatening to bottle us in. either we beat them to the iron(the South one, the West one is our back up) or we're screwed & boxed in.

My vote for the settler: SE of Osaka where the reg warrior if forted.

Another note we need to do something with our 5 extra warriors(not the next to the barb camp or the MP), take the other 4 & the Elite that popped the barbs(if he survives, good thing he's on a hill) and go attack the Chinese. That will be enough to take at least 1 city, maybe 2. It will surely slow his expansion, and after 5 turns we can sue for peace & take the 2 techs from him that we don't have!

Just my 2c......... wait in this case it's more like $2.;)

PS-- Not trying to sound over critical, this is just my opinion. Rick feel free to do what you want.

Wow! I think I've said enough. It didn't look like that much when i was typing it.

Honestly it was a double post & I'm just trying to come up with something witty to cover it up with.

Good to hear, it wouldn't be a SG otherwise;)

Tao, thanks for taking the time to give your thoughts. Constructive criticism is welcome. I know that we need more workers. My intention was for Tokyo to build workers and MUs after the barracks. I am trying to break my habit of building temple very early in the game. Gengis Khan suggested the temple in Osaka in order to bring the grapes into range. I thought it was a good idea. Maybe not though, if we settle SE of Osaka I guess the grapes will be in range anyway.

@Gengis Khan - I've never started a war this early. Not that I'm against it, but I didn't know that was the plan either.

I know my early game is weak. I am here to improve. Believe it or not, I win most of my solo Monarch games somehow.
