Error caused by wrong disc?

Hi, I recently installed Civ4 Complete on Windows 7. I leant the disc to my friend so she could install it and we could play over LAN. I used her BtS disc while she used the Complete disc. As we were playing my game crashed several times and the laptop emitted a low humming sound. I had to manually restart the laptop each time. This problem kept arising every twenty minutes or so, both in single and multiplayer. My friend had no errorrs with the Complete disc. Is it probable that using the BtS disc instead of Complete is causing the error for my game?

Also I wondered whether the 3.19 patch was the cause so I re-installed 3.17 but I still experienced the same problems. I've also tried lowering the graphics quality but this doesn't help either.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

What version of Complete do you have? Is it the US version with Colonization or the European version without Colonization? The US version is now DRM free so does not need the disc to play at all.

Either way if the 3.19 patch has installed properly you will not need the disc to play as it removes the disc check. (On Win 7 you can not patch to 3.19 in game, you will have to download the patch out of the game, right click on the .exe and choose run as administrator to install)

It is possible that different versions of the disc will caise problems, the seperate discs used SafeDisk as the copy protection, I think some of the packaged versions use SecurRom, but in that case the game would not start at all rather than cause crashes. The game only checks the disc at start rather than run the program off the disc.

I had problems with my laptop crashing after a period of time and found out it was overheating, blew a big clump of dust out of the fan and it worked fine again.

Thanks for the reply; I have the European version and currently have 3.17 though the problems didn't go away so I'll probably install 3.19 again. I managed to play a whole game yesterday but today there was a crash again :(

I don't think overheating is the problem as I have a laptop cooler, and in the past my laptop has just switched off from overheating rather than crashing. I'll try cleaning the fans and see if that helps.
